Just let her do her own shit. These things take time, especially if you want it done right, and people have other priorities. If you wanna see it all done, come back in a few weeks and read it. Nobody's forcing you to check it every day...

    Chapter XII: Full Frontal

In which we reveal the new prerunner bumper @Savage Fab built.

Once we added new fiberglass fenders to accomodate the wider front suspension, it didn't make sense to try fitting the old bumper back on. Plus, that would be very 'Banner' and we'd moved heavily toward 'HulkSmash'. Here's what we had to build on to:
    IMG_6667.jpg

As I've mentioned before, Bruce poured a lot of time into this build, but also lost money. This is because, every time we got to a point that a new tool would be useful, he bought that tool. Here we see him mounting his new metal bender to a stump located conveniently nearby our work space in the driveway at the front of the house.

    IMG_6776.jpg

(It may be relocated by the time you swing by for your custom bumper; not sure Mrs. @papasmurf loved this location.)

In any case, in the months leading up to this build, we kind of talked about a prerunner style front bumper that Bruce would build. So I sent him photos when I saw something I liked, and he did the same, to me. We were very much on the same wavelength from the beginning. Lightweight, panels only where needed to protect vital parts, and just enough room between the front panel and radiator for a winch in the future-- nothing "extra". And, we both agreed, there were numerous benefits to "bolt-on".

    Here's the build process:
    IMG_6782.jpg
    IMG_6783.jpg IMG_6789.jpg

After grinding wheels kept binding up and one went flying, Bruce remembered he'd bought a better tool for this:IMG_6792.jpg

After test fitting, he decided the mounting plates needed to be bigger:
    IMG_6793.jpg
    IMG_6784.jpg
    IMG_6798.jpg

Finally, it was time to fabricate!

Bumper gives Hulk a mean stance! Grrrrr, in a good way! Pictures don’t do justice to the effort and ingenuity but the end result is spot on! Well done!

I have a bender but how much did you pay for that tree stump? That's what I need

Good job, that's almost exactly what I've been planning for mine. I like the way you went squared up from the frame on the plate. I don't like the v shaped thong looking plates that so many trucks end up with.

 Should be another up tomorrow morning. Thanks for tuning in!
    :muscleflexing:

I LOVE everything about this bumper, including that plate. We still gotta add another under/ behind the lower edge of this one. And that may have to be a bit of a bikini cut because the LCA's are super beefy and there's very little space between. Glad now I didn't get full skids before the suspension, so we can dial it in to fit.

Originally thought we might re-use the engine skid but it's no longer compatible. So probably need custom skids from the bottom of the this bumper back to the front of the Skid Row trans skid I do have... which is waiting in Bruce's garage along with some good looking sliders from Stubbs.

Haha! No really, he volunteered. I think Adam @ARamirez73 took one for the team to make sure the newly-issued ban-hammer works. :smash:

Chapter XIII:A Visit to the Chiropractor; Ankle
    Bracelets & New Shoes

Alignment-- I'm kind of cheating here because I've decided to go with the short, clean version:

After the first alignment shop I went to tried to screw me over by telling me I needed a new steering rack for $1200, I took it to my own trusted long-time mechanic who coordinated with SoCal Suspension and confirmed I do not need a new rack :spy:  but did need the bushings replaced. Nick at SoCal recommended 'em, so my mechanic upgraded to poly bushings. Good to go!

I don't have a print-out but the alignment numbers were:

    Caster: 4 degrees both sides with no more adjustment;
    Camber: -.5 degrees with no more adjustment unless we change height;
    Toe: 0 degrees

This was done with the cheap-ass tires that came on the truck because Discount Tire doesn't stock the Cooper Discoverer STT Pro's I wanted in 285 75 R16, but ordered them in. I ordered through Discount because of their optional certification (warranty). After the new suspension was installed and before alignment, the tires rubbed the body mount in reverse at full lock. Obviously a problem, since the STT Pro's would be 1" larger diameter. But the +4 caster solved this; no rubbing!

Here's a photo of the OEM wheels and tires that came on the 1st gen. I think they look good, especially once the suspension was upgraded and the wider fenders installed: IMG_5811.jpg
    IMG_6796.jpg

Unfortunately I only had 4 of these wheels and needed 6 (2 for spares). Also, the backspacing was fine for stock suspension and tire size, but would not work without spacers for larger tires (documented in a previous post). And, although I see them on trucks and SUV's all around SoCal, I seldom see them for sale. A buddy and I visited several auto junk yards and also checked Craigslist over several months and never found 2 reasonably priced. I didn't want to buy 4 more and I didn't want to pay a bunch, when I thought I'd eventually swap wheels for better offset.

I first saw photos of SCS Ray 10 wheels in dark bronze on this forum and fell in love straightaway. But I knew they wouldn't pair well with the Inferno paint of my 3rd gen, so I stayed clear of adding them to any real Wish List.

Then, once I bought this 1st gen, every time I saw a picture of these wheels I felt kinda giddy and, I guess, like y'all do when you go and waste money :boink: replacing perfectly serviceable wheels with others you think look better. These right here:IMG_5520.PNG.jpg

I contacted Vin at SCS in January to ask about a deal on blemished wheels. He gave me a great quote for a full set of these!, then got back to me a couple days later to say he found out his brother had already sold the set. I'd already talked myself back out of purchasing ("don't need 'em") so I was actually a bit relieved. I was good with keeping the OEM star wheels and finding 2 more for spares.

Anyway, leading up to T2S, after dedicating weeks to finding 2 more of the OEM star wheels with no good result, and wary about how tight the clearance was between those and the new suspension parts, I swing back over to 'just do it!' (now Bruce was on board with this crazy expenditure, because we didn't have better options ready) and contacted Vin again. Unfortuneatly, he did not offer me as low a price as previously quoted but he had 3, so I bought those at a reduced price, plus one more at his "regular" price of $225 (Ray 10's in this size are available elsewhere for $205 each). What this got me to go ahead was Vin promising to ship the same day so we got them in time to mount before T2S. Which we did. Dark bronze SCS Ray 10's paired with Cooper Discoverer STT Pro's look really good.IMG_6920.jpg

Bruce had started the modifications under the bed (relocating the links, adding the tabs between the shocks and the cantilever) so the truck wasn't available at the time of the Discount Tire appointment. So he picked 'em up to install at home. All the guys at Discount were falling all over themselves-- drooling over Bruce's truck.

I hate this trend of beadlock wheels but those Ray 10's are an exception. They look amazing. How come you didn't go a little bigger on the tire? Seems like you could have fit 285/75/16's? Either way, it looks great. Those Pro's look mean!

    Thanks, Mike! I agree.
Doh! :homer: You're right; thanks for catching that! I wrote this in bits during a crazy busy work week and wrote it wrong. Fixed it.

Easy to miss. The suspension is the star of this show. Also, we were busy and they were dirty. Dark bronze kinda disappear into dirt. But they clean up well!

When you get a chance can you post a few more pics showing what the truck looks like from the side. I'm trying to get a better idea of how big those 285/75/16's are on your truck.

Well, I've looked everywhere and realized we haven't taken straight-from-the-side pics of Banner/ HulkSmash. We also never measured height before or after. Sorry, guys!

The day Bruce sent me these next 3 pics showing the new wheels/tires on the truck, I commented that it looked 'kind of level' and that I'd 'heard that's a thing', but neither of us really anticipated or worried about leveling, only about what we'd need to do to fit it all into the space we had to work with, and how it will perform. Everyone expects the suspension will settle and the back will be slightly higher than the front when not laden for trips; in fact, that's the goal. This is not a daily driver, so I chose those HD leafs to handle an anticipated 600-650 pounds of weight in the bed. We may add 7 +/- turns on the front shocks after a few dirt runs get it all settled, but after our tuning runs (so far, that's been only going pedal to the metal at Cinders, and one good, fast trip to Grand Falls that afternoon), I'm not unhappy with the ride.

Erik, I'll make time this weekend to find a level place and take pics from the side to show the overall. Since I don't know if you're asking because you're contemplating similar mods or just want better overall pics than we've taken :anonymous:, let me know if you want specific angles.

Also, apparently I never took any "stance" photos of the truck with only the spacer lift and 285 75 R16's that measured actual 32" before we started this build, but here's the general look:

And with the OEM wheels and 32" tires, after suspension upgrades.
