    A 45 won't stop a bear? 44 magnum? S&W 500 magnum?

I wouldn't feel safe trying it with a .45 especially with 230gr ammo, it's too slow IMO to penetrate a bears skull. With some 185gr FMJ maybe and thats a big maybe I wouldn't take a chance with my life to find out. For black bear .44 mag, .357 mag or similiar, I deer hunt in black bear territory and I carry a .357 SIG which is very close to .357 mag ballisticly, I carry 124 gr FMJ which is roughly 1400fps with approx 600 ft/lbs of energy. I am confident it will penetrate a black bears skull and you better go for a head shot if not you won't kill it fast enough to keep it from mauling your ass. I got caught in between a mama bear and her cubs one time while turkey hunting and it was the most terrifying experience of my life. BTW I turkey hunt with a .22 mag rifle after that I don't go in the woods w/o my .357 SIG on my hip.

Yesterday an urban area of Santa Cruz was closed due to a mountain lion sighting. This was only several blocks from the beach. There are some ravines that run from the hills almost to the beach. There's still a freeway cutting off access to the hills. We also found some paw prints about 100' from our upper driveway a couple months back. We're in the hills so it's expected. Still, our new puppy is a Dane Mastiff mix. The idea is that her size alone (not yet 5 months and weighing 80 lbs,) will be a deterrent.

lol this is similar to the old personal defense round debate. check out this video of 9mm,40 and 45 cal vs cinder block might help illuminate your penetration concerns.

So there has been a long standing debate on mountain lions here in CT. lots of people say they have seen them, but no good pictures have been taken. DEEP denies that they are here. Then a few years ago there are a bunch of sightings around Greenwich (a very very rich town) and when it gets hit on the highway and killed DEEP says that it was one that traveled here from South Dakota.

Hey Amido, your post is timely, 2 dogs have been killed and eaten within a mile of our houses. These were verified by the owners who saw the cat carrying the dogs off. One was an old labrador. My wife pays attention to these things as we have 3 dogs and I never let them out at night w/o me being out there with them. Its part of living in the mtns, that and bears getting into our trash!!

I wouldn't be shooting at a grizzly with a 9mm unless that is all I had.

Then again, I have a friend that hiked 4 years starting in Mexico and went up to Alaska without a single weapon. No issues, well, except of the two leg animals.

Like I said in post 66 I got caught in between a momma black bear and her cubs one time and that put the fear of God in me. I swore right then and there I would never be in that situation again. I'm a big believer in bring enough gun.

Yep, that has happened a couple times to me as well.

Once in CO and a couple in MT.

The one time in CO my Rottweiler ripped off after the three of them. Damn black bears can run fast and scurry up a tree that would make any Lineman jealous. I had my SIG 226 and two spare mags (remote mountain biking).

The two in MT got me a little rattled like you. Once was up by Glacier National Park and the other was in Pryor Mountains. Grizzlies have no fear.

We did have a run in with a Grizzly on my going away party in the Pryor Mountains, but it was to be expected. We were not being good campers and had food out at the end of May. Not smart. You never seen a bunch of 17-18 year olds run/climb so fast. Lol.

After an experience like ours, I am now very loud in bear country and have suitable protection which is a shotgun with specific loads.

WTF is wrong with them? Lions are all over this country. They're just elusive for the most part. More people are building houses in what was their stomping grounds. So sightings are on the rise. Their population is growing as well. More of them in smaller habitats and closer to people makes them more willing to take chances to get food.

Mountain lions don't bother me. They are all over the place here. They just want to get away from humans. In my hood, cameras catch them all the time.

Personally, I really like Mountain Lions. They are perfect killing machines, powerful, swift, and you are lucky to see one.

My last year of hunting we were humping through some knee high snow. We back tracked and seen a mark in the snow like a snake for about a quarter of a mile. We looked in our footprints and sure enough, a ML was following us. That was a little eerie.

I was wondering if you had been visited by the same ones that come through our place. It's probably a pretty short hike for them through the woods. Watch your back Russ!

We got lots of those kitties out here. Haha that and bears. When I teach wilderness classes we usually see one of the predators in the Rockies. Bears are more common than cats though. And Bob cats are more frequent than mountain lions. Haha I'm terrified of the cats though. The bears will leave you alone. The cats will follow you until you're vulnerable and then try and take you out.

My wife was at the DMV today and there was a guy with his arm all bandaged up. Dummy tried to get a lion off his dog by punching it. I guess he didn't get the memo that punching one will just piss it off!

For what it's worth, there have only been 20 fatal cougar attacks in North America since 1890...

This might help ease your mind from the kitties though. From Smithsonian:

    "
No other species, including our own, is responsible for the loss of as many human lives each year as mosquitoes are, Gates continues. Humans murder around 475,000 other people each year. Snakes kill around 50,000, while dogs (mainly from rabies transmission) claim another 25,000 lives. Some of the most feared animals (sharks, wolves) kill fewer than 10.

The diseases that mosquitos carry and transmit to people they bite, on the other hand, kill 725,000."

    From Reference.com

Average Number of Deaths per Year:

    Mosquitos 725,000
    Humans 475,000
    Snakes 50,000
    Dogs 25,000
    Bee/Wasp 53
    Horse 20
    Shark 8
    Spider 6.5
    Bull 3
    Mountain lion 1
    Bear 0.5
    Scorpion 0.5
    Centipede 0.5
    Alligator 0.3
    Elephant 0.25

Don't want to start a fanboy war here but, if you trust semi-auto's (i do) then pick up a G20 (full size 10mm). If not, look at a Taurus raging judge revolver and a box of 454 casulls.
Either will handle a large 4-legged surprise.
Make sure you practice (obviously). Don't want to be in a situation where you're formally *introduced* to the umm let's call it "muzzle flip" when your life depends on an accurate 1st and maybe 2nd shot.

mosquitos don't kill people its the diseases they carry so you might want to break that number into like 20 different categories.

Not to bash you but you are quoting a article written by bill gates meant to raise funds for mosquitos for who knows what purpose, with no external links to the CDC or WHO. Judge what you read with care my friend.
