Lifted Leaf Advice...

Evidently alot of us have paid but have crappy springs.

 

Just ordered old man emu suspension kit with leaf springs…. 60k on mine and the springs are flat if not slightly inverted. I haul a trailer regularly and have tool boxes which probably adds 200lbs. Didn’t think they would be as flat as they are though.

What measurements did you need to provide? Also, would I still need to add traction bars to eliminate axle wrap?

 

Never got into the axle wrap question with him as it's not a problem for me. He asked me to measure the width of the pack, height of the pack, height of the lift block, how many leaves are in the pack, and how much weight regularly stays in the bed. For U bolts it's something like this:



A. diameter of the bolt measured at the thread (Example 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, etc..)
B. distance from inside of one leg to inside of the opposite leg, measured close to the top away from the open end. (Example 2-1/2", 3", 3 1/4", 4" etc..)
C. distance from inside middle of the top to the end of the legs (example 6-1/2", 7", 8" etc..)
D. shape of the top (round, square, semi-round)
E. thickness of the current spring pack, measured close to the center bolt
F. quantity of each size needed. All U-bolts do not measure the same

The two most common errors in measuring U-bolts are the width (B) and the length (C).

That is from an email they sent me. I just found it easier to do all of that over the phone with the U bolt guy.

 

Yeah dude, that’s wild. That’s a brand new vehicle in my eyes. I love Toyota’s but they obviously cut some cost on the rear suspension. Mine is a SR5 so I know I shouldn’t expect a beefy suspension like the TRD’s, but damn. I’d expect to get a little more life out of mine. I work with a guy that has a 18 TRD and looked at his springs yesterday, they look great.

I ordered mine the day before Thanksgiving. He said 5 to 6 weeks. Ask when you call and you will get a military discount. I ordered mine with 1/2 inch lift (shackles will add the other 1.5) and they were $924 after discount. They will ask you about ubolts and calculate shipping when they are ready to ship.

 

How were they packed for shipping?

 

When you lift with shackles and don't increase the bump stop heighth it allows the longer shackle to push the spring down beyond it's design limit when the truck is loaded and in motion. This leads to flattening of the springs. Lift with shackles is not a problem, just be sure to raise the bump to compensate.

 

So I have the Toytecs at 1.5 and I am going with the Alcan springs at 1/2 of lift. With the 2 inches of lift and aftermarket rear bumper at 140 lbs, do you think I should get the Timbrens for bump stops? And what size? Mostly daily driving and we own a 3800 lb travel trailer.

 

I would be looking for either a solid material bump about 1.5" taller than stock or depending on compression rating a compressable type somewhere around 2.5" taller than stock. Personally, I use yellow Sumo springs which gives me just enough and if I load super heavy, it still has some spring to absorb impacts. The nice thing about the Sumo springs is that they are easy to slice diwn to just the right size for the application. Whatever you do, leave about 2.5" of gap between your stop at compression and the frame to allow for good articulation of the axle and shock compression stroke. There is no one size fits all, the key is to just have enough to keep your springs protected against getting put in a compromising position.

 

Gotcha. I'm not too familiar with the Sumos or Timbrens. Being that the new springs were a grand, I don't mind adding springs or Timbrens if needed.

 

Yep, the cost of my Dobinson's and all the intense labor to swap is what inspired me to throw in the RAS for insurance.

 

I think all of the rear springs are the same. Only the shocks are different.

Good evening sir. To be honest I am kind of disappointed in them. The ride was good at first, but I have had them for about 20k miles and they are really flat. I don’t tow or haul anything heavy. I’ll post up some pics hopefully tomorrow for you.

I will say the customer experience is great though. Like some other mentioned, talking with them was great and got everything squared away prior to. They answered any questions I had and got me what I needed.

Mine have 5" of lift so if they go flat well I'm hauling elephants or something
