Alright guys, I need all advice on the eradication and total annihilation of.... crabgrass.

Turns out my entire front yard is crabgrass. I want it gone. I've heard that it takes several months to kill it all off. Covering it in plastic so no light can get to it. Kill it in the summer before it seeds in the fall so that it wont grow in the spring. Half of my backyard is covered in this stuff, but most of it is dead'ish. I dug a bunch of it up yesterday and sprayed some Ortho Weed-B-Gone, hopefully that keeps it from coming back.

I need any first hand, real experience and information you guys have with this crap. From what store bought weed and crabgrass killer that actually works to how much gas I should pour on it and watch it all burn. Preferably the former.

about 8 acres w/ a 52” gravely zero turn that’s 18 years old. Will be upgrading this spring to at least a 72” with some suspension. Due for a good dethatching too.

    Nice lawns everyone.

Oh it works, the question is if it will come back. I used generic Tenacity called Meso 4SC last year, only one application, and it killed the crabgrass. Then I let the crabgrass get out of control over the summer again, huge mistake. I just sprayed the Meso again, and am really wondering if I can get a healthy fescue lawn this Fall that will not allow enough space for the crabgrass to come back again. Also I skipped pre-emergent last year, and will definitely not make that same mistake twice!

My neighbor who has a beautiful lawn is recommending I rent a sod cutter and pull the entire front yard up then sod it. Well, it's not his money to spend and it would be over $1000 to do that so I'm really not sure I want to go down that path even though it would give immediate results.

Local experts at SuperSod say to let the crabgrass go dormant, plant Fescue seed now, and use a pre-emergent in the spring. This would be much easier on the wallet, and is likely the path I'll take.

So here is my “lawn”. Other that the one piece of sod near the wood chips and porch, and the odd spot where I put some seed down, everything is crabgrass. 4B993028-7247-4DFF-B98E-12FD6FA65568.jpg

long story short, I thought is was regular grass. How wrong I was. I want to go scorched earth and dig it all up, but as you can see in the lower left of the pic there is a sprinkler system, which doesn’t work and I have no idea where it’s plumbed. So chemical death is my (laziest) option. Probably won’t even plant grass for another year or two to see how bad this stuff comes back after I hit it with the Tenacity. The crabgrass has infiltrated the wood chip planter up against the garage and porch. So after discussing with the gf we decided to pull all that up too. It’s jasmine and kangaroos paw/ cats paw (???) and they just fight each other. So death to them as well.

I try to understand those who enjoy yardwork, but I guess I did so much of it growing up I get no pleasure whatsoever from it. So when I found someone I could pay $60 per cutting (and trimming and edging and blowing) I jumped on it. They do the whole thing in less than an hour. I took me four hours, not including cleanup, when I was doing it myself. My personal belief is that my time is worth more than $15/hr at this stage in my life. All that said, there are some very nice looking yards in this thread!

Rent a slit seeder aka overseeder, blue bird is the common brand name. Use a good seed blend for your area and seed now with some starter fertilizer. Then do pre-emergent 2 treatments spring about a month apart. The only way to get rid of crabgrass is to prevent the seeds to germinating. Once you apply the pre emergent do not touch your lawn with a rake shovel or anything that will scratch the surface of the soil for a few weeks.

Maybe try a good power rake on the lawn and drop a sh%t load of grass seed down.

I like the idea of a slit seeder, have not tried one before. I just seeded my back and side yards over the weekend, but haven't done the front yet. I did use a power dethatcher so the soil is clear and visible, and it lightly opened up the surface of the soil. I rented a roller that you fill with water and towed it behind my mower to ensure good seed to soil contact. Guess we will see if that was enough! I also weighed the seed this year as I put it down and came to the conclusion that I did not use nearly enough seed last year. I applied 4 lbs/1000 sq ft in the overseed areas and 7-8lbs/1000 sq ft in the bare areas where I killed the crabgrass.

The front yard still needs to be done, I used Roundup on Friday to finish off any crabgrass that was still green and get all the weeds. Need to make up my mind this week about what approach to take for the front yard....

Needed to dethatch. Rented a machine for 4 hours. Was able to do the whole yard in 2 different directions. Came out great, so much dead shit under there that will now let the lawn breath and spread. I may throw some seed in some spots.

I need to do this. Broke my back last spring doing it with a rake. The previous owner of my house trashed the lawn and I've been working on getting it nice for 2+ years. That looks like a life saver.

It works great. Its not self propelled but if you get the blades set right it'll pull itself along very nicely.

You can buy them online for under $150. Sunjoe brand or similar, probably good for a couple seasons. Mine is about half used up after a lot of use this year trying to get rid of dead crabgrass.

Received the Tenacity in the mail yesterday as well as everything else to use it. So today I sprayed my entire front yard, my side yard/walkway between mine and my neighbors house which was nothing but weeds and crabgrass, and did some of my backyard. Sprayed about 3 gallons total. I'll find out in a week how much is dead and what I missed.

Top tip: if you guys and gals ever use this stuff, wear rubber gloves. That blue dye is very powerful long lasting stuff.

I'm just now getting to a point where I'm watching YouTube videos and reading a bit more on how to properly take care of it. We built the house almost 5 years ago. This all used to be rice fields until they developed the subdivision on it. I have a 54" Kubota ZTR I use and I'm thinking of a way to add a DIY striping kit since I usually cut on about 3.75". I change my cuts from vertical to horizontal to diagonal left to diagonal right then start over again....to avoid any ruts forming. Mostly st. augustine grass, but front yard has mostly weeds with a blend of some st augustine/bermuda/weed blend lol. Got some good motivation on here for me! Most recent pics I have are from a few weeks ago after the hurricane hit, aside from the close up of front of house.

How's the yards/yard prep coming along guys? This is the first year i'm going to start working on my yard like weed & feed/fertilizer/etc. Front yard is about 25k sqft....and that's all I'm going to try transform a bit. Went to store to buy a small spreader and round up and ended up buying a lot bigger spreader, weed & feed, and round up haha. Some of y'all got some bada$$ yards and I wanna see/hear about y'alls work!
