Big thanks to @joonbug for setting everything up for me. He organized this better than I would have. Thanks for leading the trail as well, really looking forward to the next trip, my son right now was saying he wishes we could go again this week.....lol. My wife also enjoyed it which i think she was not but she said she would go again. She also liked the fact all the people that were able to make were cool as hell. Thanks everyone for keeping it family friendly

What a crazy trip. Here’s the short version of the long story. So we decided to kick back and relax up at Coyote Flat for a couple of days. More camping and fishing than actual wheeling this time. We met up at Alabama Hills and spent a night to acclimate to the elevation. So we found a cool little site next to a stream at 6000ft. Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48 was in the background and the stars were out with a great view of the comet at night.

Next morning we packed up and headed for a couple of days up at Coyote Flat. I was pretty stoked because this was going to be the first time ever we were going to set up a base camp and stay in one spot for 2 nights. I absolutely hate packing up every morning and setting up again at night. Relaxing weekend here we come!

We decide to take the difficult route up from Big Pine up to Coyote Flat. Most of it was fairly steep, few slightly technical spots but nothing too bad. We get to a really steep 40* incline section where we read about a group from the Land Rover Club getting stuck at. Alex goes first and says this is the spot. I follow second, and as soon as I get on the radio and start laughing and say, “Pua hahaha, this is nothing!”.... grindddd! I blow out my CV axle. This was at about 8000ft. I back down to a safe level spot and spend about an hour to remove my axle and we’re back on our way. Of course I’ve only got 2wd now.

So I strap my truck up to Alex’s and he starts pulling me. We’re going slow but we’re making good progress. The peak is around 10,000ft and when we get to around 9500ft, one of the guys (or girls), I won’t mention who, starts getting altitude sickness. Heart racing, hands shaking, headache, sweaty palms and a full on erection. Ok, no erection, but everything else. We stop and take a break but no improvement so we decide it’s probably best to be on the safe side and descend back down.

As soon as we get down to about 6500ft, like a light switch, all his (or her) symptoms disappear and he’s (or she’s) completely back to normal. Crazy. But we weren’t about to try going back up, so we keep going down. Andy was a day late, so we basically run into him, check out his new truck and start looking for somewhere to camp. We find a cool little spot, on a sloped hill, so we spend the night sliding down in our tents all night. Lol.

Next morning we drive up to Buttermilk Country Trail and just drove around all day exploring. We find a nice spot to camp so we stop. We lose Andy along the way and he stumbles upon a stream with a huge patch of grass surrounded by mountains all around. He takes some pictures and finds his way back to us. Shows us the pics and we decide to go scope it out. So me, Warren and Andy head back to check it out. We had to cross the stream to get to the spot. Wasn’t easy getting up the bank in 2wd but I make it. Wow. Gotta be the nicest campsite I’ve ever seen! There was actually green grass everywhere because there were multiple streams running down everywhere. Trees and shade too! Only one problem, there’s cow shit EVERYWHERE. I mean like huge piles of shit every couple of yards.

We call Dave over to check it out and as soon as Stacey takes a whiff, we knew it was a no go. So, basically we decide the other camp is probably better for our noses and our sanity so we head back to the other camp. But I had to cross the stream again. There was a hot, single lady with two kids, and no wedding ring, (Andy noticed it) camped right next to the stream and as I floor it to make it up the bank again, I send a giant wake of river water right into her camp. Water was getting all into her stuff and into her tent so Warren jumps out with his shovel and start building little dams and diverting the water away from her camp. After apologizing profusely we head on back to the other camp.

While we were doing all that, Alex and Matt went down to Bishop to pick up our BBQ dinner because Matt decided it was easier to spend $300 than to cook dinner. Lmao. But we were really glad he did because that was the best camp food we ever had. Next morning we headed back home. Another memorable trip.

Oooo, I like that pic of the camp fire, and the switchback with your rear wheel stuffed like a Thanksgiving turducken.

Great write up @joonbug. We missed out on the CF camp but we defiantly had a great time! With good company it's hard not to!

It was really nice seeing everyone. Getting away from the day to day madness! The time away was priceless.

    100% agree on a redo!

The "person" that had the altitude sickness will need to go a few days ahead to adjust. Maybe around 7-8k first and we can head up there.
    Still have time this year.

Haven’t even thought about it yet. Got too much going on right now. I think I’m going to be out of commission for a little bit.

When the inner boot was cut off the dislodged retaining clip was clearly visible, as if the axle itself was short and pulled the CV apart. But, that's purely speculation on my part.

haha why is it such a secret?? idgaf

that shit was crazy though. I did a mtb ride yesterday. on the steepest hills where my legs were giving out, I checked my pulse and it was never more than 120, more like 110-115.

That day on the mountain, it was a steady 130-140 bpm. But I wasnt out of breath and I wasnt doing anything. Just sitting in my truck. After 30 min I thought I was gonna have a heart attack or something. I dont even know if I can get it to 130 on purpose

yep. each time I'm up in Mammoth it kicks my ass. That's 8,500 ft for the town.
We live by the coast so yeah 8,000 ft up in one day will get you.
I suggest loading on OxyBoost pills few days before and during trip. It helps a lot.
