Gold Mountain to Johnson Valley

Another great trip with the crew. This trip had everything. Started the trip with some crawling through Gold Mountain and camped in an awesome isolated spot in Big Bear. Next morning we took dirt from Big Bear all the way down to Johnson Valley. On the way down we climbed a mountain to the peak and had a couple really good technical spots on Burns Canyon Trail.

Got to Erickson Dry Lake and had the whole dry lake to ourselves. Set up camp right in the middle of the lake and had a great dinner. Then we decided to go on a quick night run to look for a mine. Ended up getting into some really serious shit on a pretty tight shelf road. Nowhere to really turn around so we just kept on trucking. It just started getting tighter, narrower and rockier. As soon as we went down a really difficult downhill section where we probably couldn’t go back up, we get into the really technical stuff. It took 3 hours to go the next 1/4 mile. Couple of recoveries, major pinstripes, and a lot of new dents and scratches on our armor... we somehow made it back to camp 4 hours after we left. It was pretty awesome, definitely the highlight of the trip.

Next morning we woke up and played on the lakebed. My little girl got to drive for the very first time. She was doing donuts by the time we left. We then drove through Johnson Valley. Lots of high speed with lots of big whoops. Found a nice campsite but apparently it was right in the middle of the largest concentration of killer bees west of the Mississippi. 4 people got stung. 1 person got it in the balls. Then out of nowhere in the middle of the night, lightning, thunder, rain and damn near hurricane speed winds. Half of the group had to fold up their tents and sleep in their trucks. Pretty crazy.

This was definitely the most memorable trip we’ve ever been on.

I dont even really remember "hurricane force winds" haha I remember a few rain drops and lightning in the distance. but then again, some delicious tequila kept getting passed around...

 

Truck is gone! Stripped the truck and pretty much returned it to stock. Will transfer some of the stuff to the new truck but a bunch of it will be up for sale soon.


Going long travel and I decided I’d rather dump that money into a new truck. Mainly, to upgrade from an SR5 to a Limited. Will now have a 38 gallon tank, leather, power seats, Apple CarPlay, center console, fin antenna (otherwise lose the radio with glass fenders), smart key, climate control, all the crap my truck was lacking. I think the new truck even has a power sliding rear window. But also to get rid of things that just couldn’t be fixed, like my squeaky dash that Toyota tried 3 times to fix and the electric shock I get when I get out of my truck and touch the door. Wtf?

Getting rid of the truck was a difficult decision but I made it and there’s no turning back. It’s going to be a long road building the new truck, half of me is very excited and the other half of me just wants to throw up.

Yeah. Working on a 2020 Silver DC Limited right now. Worst damn time to buy a 20.

not joonbug but car play, push button start...some nice features imo if you can get a decent deal.

 

Basically paying about 4-5k more for keyless entry, push button start, Apple CarPlay and a fin antenna on top of the roof. That’s it. Probably not worth it but I don’t give a shit. That fin antenna does let us glass fender guys keep our radio though. Unless it doesn’t fit in the garage, then I’m going to be fully pissed.
