I heard an exciting rumor about the possible future status of your truck.

I’m not on my rear bumps too much as I’m usually crawling more than high speed. But I definitely felt it at the Cinders. I’ll have a better idea when I have a longer high speed run next month.

Oh yeah. Forgot about that. Lol.

So we were driving home and about 8 hours into the trip we get a little past Barstow. On either side of the freeway there’s just desert terrain as far as you can see. I look over and see all kinds of dirt roads... Mojave style dirt roads, hardpacked dirt without any melons. So we start radioing each other and next thing you know we pull off the highway and somehow, we're back on dirt. WTF? Before we can even talk about what the plan was, I just get all excited and I take off flying down one of the roads. I didn’t tie anything down in the bed and I can hear all my shit flying around and my giant Orion cooler getting air and crashing back down over and over. Picture me with a giant grin on my face and chuckling to myself.

Not sure who was next, but I’m assuming Warren... because... well... that's just what Warren does. But someone takes off in the other direction and everyone else goes following him. I didn’t even know they went the other direction so I just keep going. I’m still flying down the road and I’m calling out the big hits on the radio and about 10 minutes later I finally slow down and realize I’m all by myself and out of radio range. The other guys claim they said something to me on the radio, but really, I didn't hear shit other than the voice in my head telling me to go faster and faster. Took a little while for me to turn around and find them, but I did and we got back on the highway and continued home. That 8 hour drive was starting to kill me and that little bit of dirt therapy actually got me rejuvenated for the next 5 hours.

Anyways, I'm going back to that area to explore, going to aim for June 1-2. I think it's near the route @osidepunker takes to Death Valley. Probably be a good place to meet up with any Socal guys who want to go on some high speed runs. @Porschetech29 let's go!

Theres trails all over that place. I've crossed to death valley twice but we did totally different routes each time

We can spend a whole weekend there and not even see a third of the area

Which map source is that? I use Backcountry Navigator, but haven't found a map that has the BLM overlay.

Its BC with the accuterra layer. I think its like $20/year. But its invaluable around here because theres so much public land mixed with private

It tells you which organization owns the land too. Whether BLM or Forest Service or National Park etc.

That sounds really useful, but I'd rather not spend the $20. There is a CA BLM overlay for a onetime $9 that I might give a try.

Any planning that I do is on my computer and I export a gpx file to use with backcountry navigator on my phone. What I'd like an easy reference for the unplanned stuff like what Joon is talking about doing. It sounds like the accutera layer that you are using is a really good idea.

Yeah when I plan runs I never create tracks. You end up deviating way too much. I study the maps and memorize loose routes and sometimes I save waypoints to keep us going in the general direction. I also save waypoints of as many possible campsites as I can find.

This way if we have to cut trail because we're running out of time or we run across a blocked trail I have backup routes in mind to get us around.

I’m stoked you like Smiley Rock! It’s one of my favorites in that area. Not terribly long or even super technical, but it’s just ‘tough’ and I like that. We may have to branch out into Kingman next year with you guys and hit some of the technical stuff there. The back way to Crown King is awesome, but possibly out of the way coming from north or central Cali. We’re talkkng about a possible Overland Detachment for T2S 2020. It would be a dope way to see more good trails of AZ and kinda end up at the main camp.
