I'm trying to re-install the factory radio. I gambled on it being a fujitsu jbl rather than the matsushita head unit. The speakers and the Amp are all labeled jbl.

Someone installed a Pioneer deck and I absolutely hate it. I can get the radio to work on the factory unit 17247120219553228888827483170890.jpg 17247120713533803915282686123895.jpg but I can't get the steering wheel controls to respond. Can anyone out there tell me if I have the wrong head unit, or what I'm missing? Whoever did this was fond of his wire cutters and electrical tape...

I'm assuming I can get rid of the Amp interface unit, but do I need to do anything with the 8 cut wires on it?

This axxess unit has 6 cut wires on it, plus 3 tape-spliced into the truck side wiring harness..

Over in the community megathread, the audio section talks about wiring. It'll bounce you over to this thread. In reply #20 you'll see a typical vehicle with steering wheel controls and the various OEM harnesses some may find. It's this photo:

At first I thought "goddammit, some dumbass cut your frigging steering control harness (red circle), but it looks like your steering controls are there (blue circle). They should plug directly into the back of the head unit IIRC. But I gave my old one away to another member so I can't check.

(and FYI, the speed/brake 2-wire harness can be buried in the back of the dash)

PS - the previous owner should've probably used an amplifier bypass harness, I would hope, instead of cut wires. Typically the path of wiring is .... Speakers -> Amp -> Head unit. And the amp is supplying extra stuff to the head unit, bassackwards as it sounds.

Your amp should have two plugs. One goes out to the speakers for most wires. The other is the stuff that routes to the head unit for two-way comms.

    I was hoping you'd reply @shifty` !

I've read through that thread and have it plugged in accordingly. I have not however, removed the axxess box or the Amp interface. I just tucked them back until I got some responses.. my question now is...

Do I have the wrong head unit? Is there a chance that thus one doesn't support steering wheel controls? Or, do you think all the aftermarket boxes and wiring could be interrupting what I'm doing? The axxess box seems to be T'd in, so in my mind it should still work?

    Possible? Gimme two things:
    1. The 10-digit hyphenated part number off the radio, I'll try to look up what it's from.
    2. A picture of the rear of the head unit.
Before you get anything done, you need to get all the aftermarket wiring out of there. It'd be helpful to know what all the PO installed in the aftermarket so I had an idea of whatyou're up against, if there's anything other than the Axxess TYTO-01 (aka AXTO-TY1) which is used to adapt the aftermarket stereo to your truck.

Which, that unit is probably at the heart of your shitty sound problem. Simply installing a proper amp bypass with your Pioneer head unit would likely fix your problem. The adapter boxes are shit, Axxess makes great stuff, but nobody makes a good keep-your-amp unit for these trucks. I know they released software updates for the Axxess integration box, which you can update via USB or something.

Something that may be helpful for you when unwiring: Install instructions and the wire colors etc. for that Axxess interface @ https://metra-static.s3.amazonaws.com/documents/INSTTYTO-01_web.pdf

    If I were tackling this?

I'd be untaping anything the PO taped up.
I'd be trying to get back to the bare OEM harnesses.

Given you had the JBL system in a DC with steering controls, I think that's two white plugs, the steering control plug, and the radio plug?

Anyway, get me pics of the two items above. I don't know the JBL setups in these trucks, but I think we can figure it out.
