Scenarios: listening to SXM over the truck system, not CarPlay, but phone connected. I get an incoming text and press the notification to play it and it does... but while that happens the music plays on. Same thing if I activate SIRI or use a voice dial command. It works, but the music plays on. I can manually mute the music audio by pushing the volume knob, but that is less than ideal. I scoured through the menus and didn't find this setting anywhere but it must be there somewhere. Please no more links to those 30 minute videos explaining the system. Takes too long to find the one detail you are looking for.

OK, LOL... I found a youtube that I just clicked on without knowing exactly what is was about and it was about this exact issue. Every other vehicle I have ever driven, even my aftermarket systems, auto mute the music for phone calls, voice commands, reading texts, etc. But not our Tundras? WTF Toyota?? The last comment before mine in that video was 8 months ago. And this is still not fixed??

i would delete cellphone, turn off the vehicle for a few mins then try to pair again. i am guessing the phone BT is not sending a signal to the head unit to mute the xm music. another option is to check to see if auto sound leveling is turned on.

unless it a issue with xm only. per the manual audio should be muting. i would check the MM manual starting at page 85.

Mine does this. It does not matter what the audio source is, except if the phone is the audio source. It is quiet annoying how Toyota has screwed up some of the most simple things with this model.

Exactly. The most basic thing. I have had BT in my vehicles for 15 years and CarPlay for 6 and had countless rental cars. And all of them have handled this seamlessly. Until now. The guy in the video asks Toyota to update the software but I wonder if it is maybe a hardware issue, like the design of a certain PLC?

Even when listening to the truck's onboard audio sources (AM/FM, SXM) and not the phone's sources? CarPlay works fine, too. It is the truck's audio sources that don't mute when the phone is trying to do something.

That's correct. It seems to be an Apple issue, honestly this is like the 10th thread on this issue. I don't say that to be rude, just to make you aware you're not alone.

I haven't seen any of those threads, although I haven't spent much time here until recently when I got my Tundra. I'll try a friend's Android phone. I'll also disconnect CarPlay and try mine via BT to see if that makes a difference.

Ray, you can do a advanced search under just 3.5 Gen only for "Carplay" you'll find your nightmare :(

Another thread here best of luck!

Sounds good. A search using "auto mute" didn't find anything, hence my original post.

While car play is reading the text to you, press the volume up button on the steering wheel. It will increase the volume of the message being read. The volume of the stereo will stay at pretty much the same level, but you will be able to hear the message being read much better. I kind of like that the stereo volume stays up. I've found it annoying to have messages read with other systems, because I didn't want the volume of what I was listening to to be turned down, which lead me to just reading messages on my phone rather than having car play read them to me.
This is a big improvement, for me. Just annoying how the initial default volume of car play is so low.

I prefer the music to be muted. Easy enough to press the main volume knob to accomplish that. But not sure why Toyota (or Apple?) can't fix this.
