Has anyone figured out, while listening to music and a text message is announced via Apple CarPlay, how to turn up the volume of the text for better listening (or mute the music for the same result)?

Simply turning up the volume on the dial or steering wheel while the text is being read won’t do it.

    Thanks!!

Its in the sound settings on your radio, cant remember where off the top of my head, but its in there.
I think if you scroll down where you see the equalizer for the radio, there's 2 settings at the very bottom, one is called guidance and the other.... I cant remember but its one of those 2.

You can turn the volume know while the text is being read, that will louden the voice assistance

Regrettably, no - that only makes the current song that is playing louder, but not the volume of the incoming text...ugh
    Thanks, however, for your reply.

    UPDATE:

Well, not sure why but can anyone tell me why these areas under setup are grayed-out? Looks like this is the answer to turning up the inbound text volume (hopefully)...

probably have to turn off the "auto" at the top first

I've had this same issue with the text being read, the volume of the text goes up a little when the volume is turned up, but the better solution would be have the radio go down when a text is being read. I'll try this out and see if it helps.

Is your phone connected using CarPlay or Android Auto? Could possibly be that those settings are only applicable when a phone is connected via Bluetooth.

That would be the ideal solution, like the flexibility of muting GPS turn-by-turn when you're on the phone.

And yes, I did turn off the "auto" on top and regrettably, it's still grayed-out. Head-scratcher!!

I'm wirelessly connected via Apple CarPlay. I also went into the iPhone, Settings>General>CarPlay and there's no setting there to adjust the volume. Ugh...

    UPDATE #2:

Well, I called Toyota tech support and got up to their level 2 help desk. Bottom line, I have what we call in the software business an "undocumented feature," - aka, a euphemism for software bug.
It cant be corrected via OTA updates either, the truck has to go back to the dealer and in with a tech (not a wrench) for a new download.

Hey, it's hard to build good software, I "get it."

I'm calendared for next Tuesday morning so hopefully, no further news is good news

Thanks for digging into the problem and hope Toyota can come up with a fix. It's first world problems, but perhaps they can lump the fix with other things.

nice! did they happen to tell you a tsb or technical number/identifier so if others go in we can request this via an update number they can pull up in the system? you may not know until after the appointment but i can wait! :)

Yep, I’m going to need this done as well. I’ve never had CarPlay and didn’t even know my text were being read while the music was playing. One of my buddies who was checking out the truck informed me that there should be a way to adjust the volume of the Siri lady.

Nope - but I’ll ask when I take it in next week and advise.

The CSR on the phone was really sharp. And even with level II escalation, it was a stumper.

She was pretty candid as well citing that there’s a ton of newly developed software in the vehicles and they’re doing all they can with OTA’s - my case, however, requires a clean wipe and reinstall.

Huh. It works in my truck… Siri talks over the radio and the volume is controlled by the head unit. I see your issue is much more involved than mine. I did have connectivity problems right after the new iOS update.

It’s the weirdest thing. Any other vehicle mutes the music and then reads the texts. This is the first vehicle I’ve been in that plays both and you can’t hear the text. Also mine sounds like it just comes from the driver side. Hopefully Toyota gets a fix for this.

I'm not seeing that anywhere in the UI. Going into Settings>Sound & Media and then the three options of Levels, Sound tuning and Media.

I truly believe since creating awareness to this and others are also experiencing, it's a bug. On an earlier post above in the screen shot I included it makes sense for the controls to be under the grayed-out Phone sub-menu within Settings>Sound & Media>Levels>Auto sound levelizer.

More to follow post Tuesday 8/16 appointment at 8am ET

I’m running latest software 15.6 on a 13 pro. It’s not the phone. It’s Toyota. They need to do an update and mute the music when it’s reading a text. Every other vehicle does this.

Ah....by bad, @ryanwgregg, I thought you meant the Tundra's Settings.

But regrettably again, no - I sis so into my iPhone's iOS settings where you suggested and still nada. It's clearly a bug and if anything, my local dealer will tech-to-tech report it to the greater IT powers that be and have an OTA fix "sometime soon."

interesting. I haven't checked to see if the volume sliders are greyed out but this is an issue that I have as well. I thought it was interesting that it was reading text messages at a separate volume than the music.

Our 2021 rav4 pauses music and reads the texts just fine, but the Tundra does not.

Also tried an iPhone 12 Pro that was at 15.5 and same issue. iPhone 13 Pro with 15.6, same issue.

Good to read your comment - thank you. It's more than verifying that it's a bug.

All other vehicles I've had when either GPS guidance or text audio is coming out, you can adjust it by any of the ways you'd adjust regular music volume. BTW, I even tried it with my iPhone 12 Pro being hard wire connected - still grayed out.

Hopefully Tuesday mornings dealer visit with their tech will correct this - I'll advise either way.

UPDATE: Completely underwhelming visit to the dealer.

Did a full wipe and re-loading of the onboard sw and still the same issue. The only good news is that they have a direct pipe to their tech folks to alert them of the issue.
Apparently, the level I and II tech folks I spoke with on the phone are just "behind the desk CSR reps" and they don't have the internal communication that the dealer network does.

    Who knows...

    Onward!!
