Is the hybrid really only good for the extra power? Is there no real exchange for MPG?

You have a tune that creates significant boost from idle to 1500 rpm? Please explain this black magic.

I believe Volvo or another company was working on a high rpm electric turbo to supplement the exhaust driven one off idle. The Hybrid tech makes more sense for that now honestly.

Lol, my turbos make boost coasting down a hill off the throttle at 1500 rpm, and I am not even kidding when I say that. Whatever air is moving through the engine is enough to turn them. Tuned I was making >500 ft-lbs at 1800 rpm pushing 20 psi. When I tow my travel trailer at low RPM the turbos are making boost with the wastegate duty cycle at 0.

But yes, the tuning matters. Ford's tuning aggressively controls tip in to avoid strong torque spikes and it makes the off the line throttle feel a bit dull. The thing you need to understand with these engines is that when you floor it, the throttle plate doesnt just instantly open. It feathers the throttle and the wastegates to achieve the desire air mass at whatever RPM. The turbos spool so fast that they will overshoot the desired boost target and cause a torque spike without intervention. There is way more going on then just the turbos not spooling.

My jeep liberty made boost idling in my garage at 800 rpm.

yes, my boost gauge will go on at 70+ mph when I go over 50% throttle passing in tow haul mode. I’ve seen it kick in at 80 mph on slight declines keeping speed

I’m not even sure how to unpack this. Turbos spinning isn’t boost. If you’re not on the gas, burning fuel and air mixture to create exhaust gas in significant quantities, you’re not creating boost. Idling the engine will not create boost. Coasting the engine will not create boost. You will have a negative manifold pressure or vacuum in both of those scenarios, Right?

Maybe my misunderstanding is that you have to create a positive pressure scenario in the intake to have “boost” when you could potentially have a negative 5psi in a turbo engine that would be a negative 12 in a non turbo engine and that 7psi difference is considered boost? Even though your still in a vacuum scenario?

Taking delivery of a 2023 hybrid platinum at the end of the year. I originally had a deposit for a TTV6, but when my dealership had both versions in limited trim a while back, they were gracious enough to allow me to test drive both to compare. Like the guy said a few posts back, night and day difference! Told my guy immediately to switch my deposit to the hybrid

You guys almost convinced me to trade in my non hybrid 1794 and switch to hybrid. But it's really not an option in CA - I'll end up paying sales tax once again on a $70-80k truck, and that's not acceptable waste of money for me.

Plus loosing under seat storage is a BIG minus.

I'm hoping that Toyota will fix the throttle lag with this latest TSB that they released and all will be fast and furious.

And hybrids are much less reliable than non hybrid. Jk

That is actually a huge issue the wife brings up with the storage loss. More punchy power or more space for stuff... I figure I could find creative storage options, but I won't find creative options for more hp and torque. I'd stick with what you have and at least wait a few years for a more refined truck.

This new powertrain feels like it was engineered to be a hybrid. Combined with well-tuned shifts, the power delivery is just so smooth and effortless at any speed. You generally appreciate the most just going easy around town, thanks to all of that low-end electric torque. If you've driven an EV, you'll know what I mean.

Which does wonders for the auto stop-start system, as this is easily the best I've ever driven. Very seamless and has no harsh engagement with the engine turning on or off, which is good since I can't turn it off either way.

Basically, despite all of the other negatives with the new Tundra, the hybrid powertrain, at least for me, is clearly the best part.

They all depreciate as soon as you drive them off lot. Hybrid cost around $3000 more. I drove both non Hybrid and Hybrid. Not sure what your problem is with Hybrid. Do you have some knowledge you can share on why you feel that purchasing a hybrid model is spending money on a depreciating model? Would be interested in hearing.

A few peeps getting spooled up on this one!!

    Here’s my thoughts:

-I wanted as much power as I could get in my new truck

-when the sales guy told me an extra $4000 for the hybrid (Canadian price) I jumped on it because I thought it would be $6-8000 more so it depends what you are expecting. I was pleasantly surprised. My other option was to spend $10000 to put a magnussen supercharger on my 2019 but that was a path to 8 mpg and I did not want to go that direction

-I like my new truck a lot and losing the space under the seat was a drag but I fit all the stuff I need from my 2019 behind the seat of the new truck (shackles/ tow strap/ first aid kit/ torque wrench etc)

Kap, how’s the lag in sport or sport +?

My experience with the non-hybrid was in normal the entire time, so I may not be giving it a fair shake. With the hybrid, the pedal can be touchy in those modes until used to it. I would think at least one of the other modes would hold RPMs higher so you are closer to where torque starts to really climb.

I can fit a small electric air compressor, ratchet straps, bungees, a first aid kit, and a jump starter behind the passenger rear seat. If you need more than that, and many do, you will be looking at options that involve the bed. Mine is a pavement princess, so all the off-roading, hunting, and camping contingency items are not needed.

The only loss for me is I typically upgrade my sound system and the box I’ll have to build one day will be an absolute motherfucker. If I didn’t have the hybrid, I could drop it under the seat and be done.

I was probably gonna go with one of those swing storage boxes in the bed. It's just my wife and a dog 99.99 percent of the time with a dog hammock occupying the rear. I usually carry bike tools, a portable compressor, straps, and recovery gear. I was gonna build something to make the floor flat and level with the battery(storage compartment behind the front seats. ) Probably make it out of mdf coated or carpeted.

I got a bed cover and floor mat in rear. A five gallon bucket and ice chest with stuff that I normally carry. Works out just fine.

I will say that with temps in teens and low twenties here. My gas mileage is around 19.5 instead of 21 or more with warmer weather. Hybrid doesn't come on as much either.

Well, what my truck has sometimes is a throttle lag. It's not too bad, but not pleasant either.

I never experienced throttle lag more than 1 second at worst, and it only happens when I'm slowly coming to a stop sign, rolling through at about 2mph, then when trying to accelerate, it hesitates for about 1 second then accelerates fine. This only happens for me at one stop sign on my drive to work... So very rare and not a huge deal.

Overall, there's almost no hesitation in acceleration..
I'd say it's maybe 0.3 seconds less responsive than my old ram truck with a hemi. But it is what it is, and I guess that's how a v6 turbo drives.

I actually like Eco mode better - I believe that it has more linear and more predictable acceleration which I enjoy more. Standard or sport mode we're not enjoyable for me, sometimes felt more delay or jerky. I drove city most of the time.

I just learned about a tsb to address some sort of a throttle delay issue, and will ask dealer to do this service next time. Hopefully it'll improve the throttle response.

Either way, this throttle delay issue is most likely a glitch that will be fixed for a software updated in the very near future, so while not pleasant, it's not a big deal for me.

I use the entirety of my current rear seat storage in my Silverado: battery jumper, tire compressor, winter emergency gear, ropen and straps, tire fix kit, bunker cables, canned food and extra water (never know), and health kit (ibuprofen, antihistamines, burn gel, insect repellent, sun screen, Excedrin, electrolytes, etc).

The interior storage is important to me, especially living in a hot climate like Phoenix.

That being said, looks like I can fit the heat sensitive items behind the rear seat, and get two of the swing cases for the other items (https://youtu.be/q7f1hPfBLVc).

So far this thread has done a great job at convincing me that even though the mpg gain is negligible, as someone who comes from a long line of power (350 Camaro, bullitt mustang, 392 Challenger, Mercedes AMG), the hybrid is definitely the way to go.

Now just a matter of finding one one the lot soon and at MSRP

what do you normally put in the bed? Decked system is clutch and allows for great storage and organization- but kind of need a topper or don’t need a lot of bed space.

Side hustle is working farmers markets and events, so the back hauls goods, generators, storage, etc.

I really like the Roll n Lock bed cover. Currently have a trifold tonneau.

The F150 with the 240v generator Powerboost looked real appealing for someone needing a 240v generator, but ultimately I just think f150s have amazing features, but look so boring.

Nope. Most are just enjoying their new trucks and not looking back. Haters gonna hate.
