It's not the turbo I'm concerned with its the batteries. Regardless of mileage the battery will only make it around 10 years. Replacements are thousands and what is the resale of vehicle with older batteries?

the new model could feature rocket engines and laser beams shooting out the headlights for all I care. the biggest hangup I see is how sharp the pricing has gone with trucks. if they slap a price on that is 10-15k more than todays models are I'll happily sit in my current truck for 5 more years.

agreed... unfortunately i see a SxS payment tagging in once the truck payment expires in the next 18 months or so.

In my opinion, with all things being equal, the simplest answer to a problem is usually the most correct. A normally aspirated v8 engine has more than enough torque and hp for my needs, therefore it is the choice that I will make every time. For another person, he/she may need faster acceleration and the turbo may be in their best interest.
I’m a simple person, and a normally aspirated engine is a simpler way of producing what I want. With lower pressure, it will be less prone to mechanical stress/failure.
Does that mean I’m correct? No, it means that I know what I want. It’s what I believe is right for me. That said, I think that in the next 20 years, manufacturers will only offer electric vehicles. I don’t like it but it’s what I think is going to happen. When it does, I’ll have to adapt, but until then, I prefer what I prefer.

Correct some people have luck and others dont. The hybrid system is really great. Toyota has spent alot of years designing and testing it. But the atkins engines. I dont like them at all. If you have time take of the air filter on those prius and open up the throttle its crazy how much oil is in there. Am about to clean mines and the egr because am trying to keep this snail for awhile. Lol

Lol. Yea if I were doing trades or lease every 2-3 years, I would just get a GMC or Chevy , heck even a Ford. Always under some warranty

Off course I'll be losing hella $$$$ on monthly payments. More than gassing up the yota

1980's cars left such a bad taste in my mouth for turbos that I would never even consider one. I am sure they have come a long way since then, but I have heard some negatives on the ecoboosts. Turbos don't belong in trucks, unless they are diesel (just my biased view).

Im interested in a hybrid, especially with the skyrocketing price of fuel. With Toyota's record with the Prius, I trust them to get it right.

My issue as always is cost. An SR5 TRD Off Road crew max is $45K+ already. What is a hybrid gonna cost? Probably $60K at least. That puts it way out of reach for most average people who arent willing or able to have a $700 per month paymeny over 7+ years.

You can replace individual battery cells on the Prius when they go bad (50 bucks on ebay), in lieu of spending thousands for an entire new battery. Toyota has probably figured out how to prevent people from doing this by now though.

Edit: I am making the crazy assumption that the Prius and Tundra batteries will be similar.

Hopefully they'll still have a non-turbo v8 option as well. Which would you rather buy, a 200k mile solid v8 or a 200k mile turbo v6 that's going to have to have the turbo serviced/replaced soon? Those things don't last forever and they're expensive as hell when they go. They basically kill resale value. Hard pass if a turbo 6 and electric hybrid are my only two options. Now if there's a hydrogen fuel cell option coming, I'm all in.

I see "turbos" has been mentioned quite a bit. Is that just a "what if" or is that the direction toyota is going with the Tundra?

Im not really into turbos on a work/daily driver vehical. Thats an expensive item that will have to be serviced or replaced at some sorta interval. Ugh...

One of the newer Tesla models has an easter egg that will make the car dance to a classical song. Supposedly there are other hidden easter eggs too.

But you know what... the good thing is if Toyota is going that route, now all the idiots who say Toyota isn't inventive enough will at least stop saying crap about the Tundra right? I mean that's the only "BAD" thing people ever say on videos, reviews, etc. No one complains about reliability, nor do they care, in a real world ownership scenario, reliability is #1, then all the gizmos and stuff.

Having had a Ford Eco v-6 with twin turbos blow up on us at 33,300 miles (5 1/2 year old seldom driver for the wife), I think the problem lies with the pressure the turbo builds in the lighter aluminium motors. Toyota may can get it right, but the pressure build up wins over time imo... I would choose a v-8 over the 6 with turbos. I also had the raptor with the v-8 and the v-6 twin turbo. The twin turbo set up was crap.

Just my opinion having owned similar engines to what Toyota might be building. If it has gas turbos, I am out.

I am paying off my other car right now and then I wanted a couple years without payments to beef up the retirement fund and do some things to the house. But it is getting to be a really heavy lift to resist snapping up a Tundra in the next couple years just so I can get a new 5.7 6 speed that I can be confident will give me no worries for another 10 or 20 years while everyone else is the guinea pig for these new 27 speed tranny/4000 hp 2.3 liter motor combos.

They are now touting a Twin Turbo V6. If I wanted a Twin Turbo V6 I would buy that crappy underpowered Raptor. I like my supercharged 5.7L. It works well.

The interesting thing here is Toyota had one of the baddest I-6 Turbo motors ever produced (2JZ) and when not spooling got decent gas mileage and that was 20 years ago. Add hybrid tech to that kind of motor with an 8 or 10 speed transmission and I'll be interested for sure...I love my 5.7 but to say I'd never buy anything but a V8 seems very close-minded.

    Curse you Perry the Platypus!
I could see them releasing a 5.0 V8 and have the twin-turbo V6 as the top-of-the-line engine. I'd take the V8 option any day!

everyone complaining about "turbo reliability" I'm no trucker, but im pretty sure MOST variants of trucks on the road run a turbo charger, and those freight liners and MAC trucks are known for going a million miles routinely before rebuilds....and that's a million HARD miles. I have no issues with turbo reliability. obviously, theres something for simplicity in design, but turbos are by no means a "new technology".

Yeah, can't really project the reliability of one onto the other. There are just too many variables involved.

in this thread, the overwhelming response to why people won't buy a Toyota turbo v6 is based on anecdotal experience with a Ford turbo v6. so yes, you're absolutely right.

Conservatively, if you put 12k a year on the odometer, figuring 15mpg avg, @ $2.50/gallon average you will have saved $12,000 in gas over that 10 years. Those numbers are very conservative so most people will save much more than that.

On a side note: Of course the turbo hybrid is not going to fit the bill for everyone.

Another interjection here is that turbos only work at the high end of the rpm range so low end hauling shouldn't be affected other than increases in torque from the electric motors.
