I was hit by an uninsured driver that ran and got caught. Everything was covered and I didn’t have to pay my deductible.

I was rear ended in my Camry and the other party was also insured through Geico. I put in the claim, and the lady that hit me refused to answer their calls and mail. They told me if they can’t get her side of the story, I’d have to go through my collision and pay my deductible. After a week or so of fighting Geico about that utter nonsense, I gave in and told them to file under my collision. They put me on hold, came back and said they would cover it under uninsured motorist. Side note: I just received a letter this week, 1.5yrs later, that they recouped the money from her.

Being a border state is bad news for auto coverage! Wife and I pay $1,000 / 6 months through USAA for auto coverage. Coverage is for my 2017 Tundra and her 2015 Yukon XL Denali.

    300/500/100
    300/500 UM/UIM
    Comp and Collision
    Med Pay / PIP
    Full glass
    rental coverage
    roadside assistance

An old college roommate tries to sell me Farmers every year but he can't match the USAA premium for the same level coverage.

It varies by state, because every state has their own insurance department with different regulations. Underinsured and Uninsured are coverages that should be purchased (in general - not all states are applicable) that protect you and your occupants when some other bonehead does not carry sufficient limits or is driving without insurance.

I totally understand carrying UM and UIM coverage... I've just never seen underinsured motorist coverage for property damage on a policy that also carries comprehensive and collision coverage on the vehicle. That seems redundant beyond recouping the deductible.

It is intended for medical and injuries in every state that I have ever personally been involved with litigation issues, so I agree with you.

Insurance is a scam, pay, pay, and then when you need it the screw you. We also carry a 1 million dollar umbrella policy that I doubt we will ever need.

I hear ya. If they didn't try to screw people at every opportunity I would have to find a new line of work.

Insurance is like every industry, it is designed to make a profit. I work in the industry and also hate paying the premiums. However, I have never had a client that I am dealing with (involved in some sort of litigation) say to me that they had too much coverage.

My biggest complaint is that so many people go without insurance, or buy just the barest minimal limits, or are committing some sort of fraud which drives up the cost for the rest of us. The rest of us have to buy more to protect ourselves and to subsidize those who are cheating the industry.

And there are also some unscrupulous adjusters and bad insurance companies out there too.

I’ve been researching insurance quotes for a while and every time I think I’m overpaying, I request quotes from the big corporations that end up real close to each other.

With that said, I’ve been working through a local small insurance agency for the past 12 years or so and felt like I was getting hosed on my premiums. When my homeowners and auto were set to renew, they called me and ran our info through their system and I wound up saving nearly 600/yr on auto with the same coverage and almost 200/yr on homeowners with same coverage.

I guess what I’m trying to say here is like others have said.... contact a local insurance agency that can shop around for you. Of course they make their money somehow from you, but at the end of the day, they saved me a bunch of money and have the same full, and very well insured coverages as before.
