2016 184k I'm on windshield number 2, I agree it's not the same. I feel a slight air leak in mine.

Yep, similar experience with SafeLite on my 2006DC. Is why I will keep the OEM front windshield as long as I can. Aftermarket can never touch the original.

Just noticed I have a cracked lower windshield at 2,500 miles. I don't see a chip, just a 1' horizontal crack under the driver's side wiper blade in that blackish area under the dash.

Just replaced the rear sliding window on a 2015 at safelight... non OEM, is not as thick and a very small gap can be seen on the outside. If you keep your vehicle for a long time go OEM.

This is a sore subject for me, as the road work done recently on my path to work left little [and not so little] rocks all over the road that big truck tires throw at oncoming traffic at 55 mph. They never SWEPT the rocks after doing the reseal! [or it was a half-assed attempt]

I've got 3rd party insurance that covers me, no deductible, for 17 bucks a month: but, I got a super deal because my son works at the dealership.:D

    I love that kid ...

I am not sure Toyota provides it aftermarket. I know my local dealers don't get into any glass repair or replacement. They won't touch it.

Are you getting OEM windshields done at the dealer with that coverage or aftermarket? Also, does it cover rock chip repair?

The windshields are aftermarket unfortunately. OEM from the dealership is $800 for the windshield, plus $200 and change to have an installer do the work. The dealer doesn't actually install the windshields.

Rock chip repair still costs the $50 deductible, which oddly is exactly what a rock chip repair costs. The one thing I don't like about the insurance is I have to use their "preferred" installer. Based on how quickly my new windshields get chipped, I'm becoming convinced that they use the cheapest glass possible. But for the price I'm still ahead.

I was actually doing some research due to this thread yesterday. I think for my next windshield, I'm going to bite the bullet and have a different installer do it. I found one locally that claims to use OEM quality glass. If that windshield lasts longer, I may not renew the AMI insurance and instead set aside a few dollars a month to budget for a yearly windshield.

I had to replace the faculty shield on my 15 4Runner TRD Pro which bummed me out but I went with the factory replacement from Toyota which is about 2x the amount of aftermarket but was worth it I feel as I have had no issues. My 2010 Tundra windshield is still factory with chips in it and as long as there are no cracks, I just keep it in even if it does bother me to look at the chips.

The OEM glass has "Toyota" embedded in the glass at the lower corner, driver's side. Just like the original. I bought a used 4 Runner last year that had a cracked windshield. Chose OEM.

You may know this already. For anyone that doesn't, it's how to ensure you got OEM.

Everyone around here has a cracked windshield. Don’t even bother replacing mine till it gets really bad. Got a crack right now across the whole thing. Luckily it’s low. Last time I replaced it i got hit ON THE WAY HOME from the shop. I also hit my self driving dirt roads. Dont know exactly how it happens but I’ve thrown rocks up it front and driven into them.

Some painful stories here. Ironically, I received a nice crack just yesterday, making this my 3rd. The painful part...I was driving 2 hours away to have my shoulder drained and begin cortisone shots.

I will say, the SafeLite replacement windshields suck. They fog up all the time, and many waves if you look at it from the side. At the same time, the Toyota version is closer to $1k while the cheap SafeLite is about $300ish....with heater at the base

I've owned over 60 different vehicles, and I've only replaced one windshield.
i have had a few rock stars repaired, but just the one replacement.

Yeah, that's the glass that will run over $1000 installed. The place I'm planning to go, Standard Glass, says "All of our auto glass is manufactured by an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) providing you with the highest quality part for your vehicle."

    https://www.standardautoglass.ca/

It probably won't actually say Toyota on it but hopefully it will be built to a better quality level than whatever crap Crystal Glass keeps putting in...

I've been driving for 30 years, many different vehicles. Never had to replace a windshield, although my last Ford Focus (bought used) looked like somebody left the wipers on during a sandstorm...dangerous to see through going into the sunset/rise.

Probably 99% of my driving was back east - Ohio, Maine, points in between. Anyhow, since moving to the Phoenix valley both my fiancee and I have hit rocks and developed cracks, had to have windshields replaced. What is it? Crappy road maintenance, or just a lot of dust and rocks and not enough rain to wash them off regularly?!

I bought my 2003 Tundra about 10 months ago. It had a few small chips in the windshield at purchase. After 6 months or so they started to grow - and I got more rock hits on the 202 and 60 - but they were passenger side and I ignored as long as I could. On a recent trip to Utah I was enjoying a beautiful day, 7000ft, high 20s outside, so of course I rolled my window down to get fresh mountain air. Cranked up the heat, put it on the windshield to keep me warm (with the window down) and BANG, watched that small crack grow all the way across the windshield.

Last point: my Tundra looked spotless when I bought it. I mean, like it was new from the factory, despite being 15 years old. Only had 95K on it. The previous owner took immaculate care of it, with all the records - maintenance passport full of stamps and all. The Carfax was clean, too, except for several windshield replacements. I think three were just a month apart, like clockwork. I thought that was suspicious, but after talking to the previous owner - he had been on some construction sites with rocks in the road - and hearing stories on here, I guess it's just a fact of life out here.

TL;DR: in 30 years and probably 8 vehicles, only needed to replace the windshield once.

Same on my '06 DC. ONly at higher speeds - 70, and I could drive in and out of the whistle at times by varying speed. Other times, not so much.
It was one of the reasons I moved to the 2017 CM.
