I have a 2016, owned it 3 years and 3 months (90k miles). I moved to Colorado about a year into owning it...4 windshields since then. There was one were I had a new one less than a week and caught a huge rock AGAIN.

Ridiculous. I now have a place that tints my windshield prior to installation so it's seamless. Top stripe (limo) and 50% Ceramic on the inside. Blah.

I didnt go through this one, but a 2 foot tall owl with a 6ft wingspan and a 12 in rat in his his talons did. One of my bones of contention with Toyota windshields is that in my experience once you replace the factory shield it will never be airtight again. The installers have to get seals from Toyota. Hect my dealer here sends them out...btw that rat in the talons prolly saved my life. That sucker came through at 80 and hit me in the face. We fought, I left the road at a violent 45 angle, it was the most crazy violent thing I have been through...the rest of the 600 mile journey was cold and windy! enjoy...!

Damn! That is a crazy story! I agree the replacement windshields aren't the same.

don't want to hijack, but imagine my surprise when I got to a gas station 50 miles down the road, opened the door and freaked when I saw the dead rat between my feet...none of this was on my bucket list lol

Wow! Crazy story, Man; I'm glad you made it through that alive!

Edit: Also, I hope no one on here has actually "gone through" a windshield.

Sadly, this is not a gap between dimensions, as illustrated by Doctor Who, but a new crack in the windshield of my 2017. I'm super bummed.

And it's started to spread so, although I'm over-extended with my crazy spending on another truck, apparently I'm gonna have to replace it sooner than later. I'm sad to read here that an aftermarket replacement won't be as-new. :(

Thank You, so after rehab, flutes and totem spirits I had to find out the meaning of owls. Id imagine most of us have only a 30 minute thought about owls in our whole life. This experience was eye opening. Literally, that focker had just grabbed dinner, was taking off home, and when he ascended to about 4 feet he met me. The blood on the hood was dinner...if I had been in say, Colorado, OP, I would have just flown off a cliff. I'm glad I was in Oklahoma where i40 is wide and there are no trees. The owl did not die on me...he hit me in the face, I grabbed him with my left hand, (I'm left handed) and tried to chunk him through the closed driver window. Then,,,I through him right. When I came to a stop, I opened my door and the light exposed this giant creature staring at me (like wtf did you just do?) from the passenger footwell. His right wing did not move but his left wing tried to fly. It touched the top of the FJ cabin. I was in shock. I guarded my face with my left arm as I reached over and opened the passenger door. I then backhanded him out of the rig and drove 15 feet up to level ground. I got out with a flashlight to see him and he was gone. Boy did I miss an iphone moment. Looking back, I was in my FJ not the most stable, I was tired, it was midnight, so I was driving 80 with....both hands on the wheel. That was paramount to leaving the highway at speed at a 45 and not just turning the FJ over. Had that owl not had a rat his talons would have been in my jowls. Holy cats. anywhooo, back to the regularly scheduled thread.....

FJ's have flat windshields. Ive had mine since 2013. It had rock chips and cracks galore, none impaired my vision, but I just did not want to have that thing taken out. The owl changed my mind.

Sorry Mr. Snowboard Tundra for the hijack, but, it is windshield related lol. I drive my new truck with a renewed appreciation and fear of the first rock chip. I've often thought that perhaps there was a film that would at least prevent a rock chip. I'd be interested to hear about you tinting process you get now.

Does your insurance cover replacement free? If you don't know, you should check into it.

In KY you get as many windshield replacements as you need with no deductible and no hit to your insurance rates.

I've never replaced my tundra windshield, but the wife's highlander has a replacement in it. Good as new IMO. After the first replacement, I wouldn't care about any of them. Safelite will come to you and replace them while you are at work so there isn't even any lost time other than the phone call.

yeppers you are correct. So oem is double what non oem is, but I met a fella who told me his non oem was better and stronger than oem. Whoever does it does need to go to Toyota for the seals. You do not want non oem for those imho.

Still on the original, albeit with a couple of insignificant chips here and there. Plenty of sand blasting, though.

Had a large duck fly out of a ditch coming at me at 25mph while doing 60mph. Thing hit the top of the windshield about where the rearview mirror is located and bounced off. He left a stream off diarrhea for me to clean off. Nothing like a 20lb Butterball hitting the windshield doing 60. No damage other than my hand having to clean off the residual streak.

Somebody one up this story please.

So far lucky with my 2017CM. Darn I hate to jinx myself.
On my 2006DC, I went through 4 in less than 2 years, 2 in 8 months.

I will not follow behind a rock truck. Was lucky on my 1st one - if the rock hadn't hit high enough to get onto the metal flange the windshield rests on, it may have come though like a bullet., I had glass shards in my lap.

I end up having a new windshield installed at least once a year. Right now, I have a crack that travels the entire length right at the wiper height and 2 chips on the driver's side. Aftermarket glass in chintzy crap and so much as look at it cracks it. I called Toyota and asked them what it would take to put OEM glass in. $800 for the glass, $200 and change for labour at a local glass shop.

I have 3rd party glass insurance. I pay $150 ish per year. Each windshield costs me a $50 deductible. The aftermarket replacement glass for my '05 is just under $400, so I come out 50% cheaper per year.

8500 miles since August when I took delivery and shockingly not a single rock chip yet, in Arizona no less...

I'll probably get one tomorrow just because I posted this.

Got a rock chip my first year within 5k. I would’ve just left it if it weren’t right in the middle of my view and I was starting to go cross eyed. Replaced it and got another rock chip 6 months later. Had a glass company fill it and a week later it split all the way to the edges. It’s up on the passenger side top corner so it doesn’t bother me any. I’m going to leave it until I get another one in my view. I really don’t want to keep retinting the brow.

Safelite. The first one was almost completely covered by insurance for some reason. The others out of pocket.

And worse, the 2nd time, it had a leak so Safelite pulled and reinstalled 3 times, and never really got it right. That was part of the reason for moving to the 2017.

What is this 3rd party glass insurance of which you speak? Interested since I have a lot of highway driving every month right now.

It's called Autoglass Maintenance Insurance. They're an Alberta company that provide a separate policy so when you make a claim you main auto insurance rates don't go up.

You're best bet is to talk to your insurance broker and see if there's something similar available State-side.

This is exactly why I have OEM replacement policy on my vehicles. I have replaced windshields on my FJ Cruiser, my 2014 Camaro, and my 2001 CRV (2 times). We have a lot of airborne debris in the high desert. I got hit with a rock last week on my 2018 Tundra and luckily no chip or crack. It's gonna happen. And when it does, I have Safelite on the speed dial. They have all of the OEM products for replacing the windshield (including all of the fasteners and gaskets).

Going 70 down the highway, been on the road for hours. Sister in law riding shotgun, my brother sleeping in backseat.
A f'n turkey comes straight towards the windshield, I swear it was looking at me
Somehow it missed us at the last second.
Sister in law and I both screamed and ducked

Still on the original windshield at 37k miles. Four cracks, two professionally repaired, one repaired by myself and one left alone. I just hate having the original glass removed. I've had leaks before on another vehicle and wind noise and even had the installer scrape the paint on the edge of my roof line on a car. I even had the wrong windshield installed which didn't accept my overhead mirror console so it had to be removed and replaced a week later after the adhesive cured.

Didn't have my OEM windshield more then 36 hours and a dump truck came by and cracked it, real good! Then replaced that one and it was cracked three months later. Month ago I had a new one installed, just a matter of time now:cool: On my 3rd windshield and sure there will be more to come.
