Let's see this dog! If she doesn't have papers, have her listed as Mixed Breed.

Canada must be different. My insurance didn't ask if we have a dog. I don't think we can sue as easily as you guys down there.

The reason why German Shepards aren't on the list is political as they are "police dogs". There's actuarial data that supports certain breeds to some extent. I wouldn't say that it is a no brainer. I think how dogs are taught is more relevant.

Insurance pricing for homes vary by state, proximity to a water source and fire department, by city, by crime rates, by weather exposure, by history of the policy holder, by age of house, build type of house, etc....

Since insurance is regulated by each state separately, some states do not allow dog breed as an underwriting consideration, though they will allow bite history regardless of breed. I often see settlements in 6 figure ranges for children that suffer significant injuries from dogs. Many homeowners policies only carry 250k - 500k liability limits. If you get nailed with a 600k settlement and only have 500k coverage, the difference comes out of your pocket. It's better to buy more coverage on the homeowners policy or buy an Umbrella. This is especially important if you have kids and they have friends over regularly.

She is loving life for sure. Maybe when my son moves out, I'll just keep her. She's just an awesome dog. I grew up with German Shepherds, great dogs too. My daughter rescued a pittie several years ago. He is a 90lb baby.

He found an independent agent 2 miles from his work. I will also suggest the he get a quote from USAA. Thanks everyone for all of the great input.

Our pooch came from the City Pound as a Rescue. She looks like she has some "banned" breeds in her, but they listed her as "mixed breed" as they know it's not the dog, it's the owner. We have talked to others at the Dog Park who picked up what appear to be "pitbull/banned breed" dogs and when questioned, the City workers would say "no, no...". Because if they do identify a "banned" breed, they are forced to put them down. It's a shame to put a dog down just because it's s certain breed, it's not the dogs fault.

In addition to the factors already shared, I recently read that credit score is another factor used to determine insurance cost. So... your son just starting out may have to pay more than you do in otherwise similar circumstances.

State Farm. I had two pitbulls and hell of a time renting or purchasing with insurance. Funny enough one of my pitbulls was attacked by 3 German Shepard’s when I was out skating with him years ago. Those dogs had no issue I’m sure!

Yep. And they’re good herders. But they got adopted by the anti-social, chain ‘em up and leave them outside to guard the drug house sector... after dobies’ hey-day passed... so a tiny minority ruined the reputation of the breed.

These make no sense... info is outdated and based on the number of reported bites, without regard for the total number of pets of each breed overall....

Not on these lists— the scariest dog breed I’ve ever seen— is Fila Brasileiro. They’re “fear biters” and typically weigh >115 # = not a good combination for companionship. That said, I’ve known a couple socialized as family dogs from youngest puppyhood, and they’re loving companions to their “parents”.

Edit: removed the comparison which, while well-reasoned, may have prompted political discussion.

We are with Countrywide Insurance (no affiliation with Countrywide Financial) and they never asked about the breed of any of our dogs. We had an AKita. Our dog now is an Alaskan Malamute. Insurance guy has seen both of our dogs and never said a word.

As far as I know, they have always been on the list...and for good reason. I love this dog, but I have seen how nasty he gets.

This is also the reason I have him. When two men tried breaking into my home, he had all intentions of defending it with his life. So did I

Those lists are just off different insurance websites. Not my lists, and there are definitely nastier dogs out there than these list. These lists are just derived from “typical” family pets in the US. I didn’t see a Bully Kutta on the list either, and the only one of those I would want to see is via my AimPoint Pro.

The dogs on these lists are the ones I want, so I spend more on training and insurance. Pretty sure a poodle in my hood wouldn’t last long...

I miss mine. So damn playful. Is yours a loud growler when playing? Mine would scare the shit out of people even when they were just playing.

My oldest wants a Husky. I said no due to her personality. She might do ok since she likes to run long distances...

They are strange dogs. Very independent and only listen when they want to. Not stupid though. Ours is athletic but not hyper like some of them and is actually very well behaved. She turns 12 this fall and is in way better health than our 7 year old malinois/pit mix.

No, but we have a few in the neighborhood along with the bears, coyotes, soon to be wolves, bobcats, etc.

That was an award winning photo of a house in Boulder, CO. Amazing animals. I never had the opportunity to interact with a mountain Lion. I did get to play with three tiger cubs that were 6 months old (in Montana back in 1993). That was so amazing! So powerful. I was giving those little suckers all I had and they just played harder. I even got bit in the ass (lightly..but it did break the skin).

Our local Dog Shelter told me that Huskies and Pitbulls are their top visitors. Huskies are great escape artists...very intelligent.

Our Farmers carry 2 500k policies. Luckily in public they're gentle as can be. In the home their domain is a different story. I haven't had to ever test their ability but I do know they both bite and release on command in 3 languages. We just lost my oldest boys Father last year who was that qualified for the Worlds in Germany taking Nationals.
