My son is in the process of purchasing his first home. Right now he and his rottweiler live with my wife and me. He went to get a quote from Erie Ins since that who he uses for his truck. He was told that Erie will not provide Home owners to him since he has what they consider a dangerous dog breed. So what insurance do you all use that own a ferocious killer dog?

I use State Farm, I don't think I told them what type of dogs I have.... do most insurance ask?

USAA will insure any dog until an attack.

I think it’s State Farm or Farmers that doesn’t specify dog breeds.

You want it in writing that you are covered.

Apparently Erie did ask. He was going to try State Farm. I was looking into USAA but unfortunately he is not eligible with no military service.

My Rottweiler bit two people and caused significant flesh damage. I gave him a treat (one was breaking into my truck, the other time someone broke into my home). Those doctor bills would have been pretty high had I needed to cover those out of pocket.

I don't think I've ever been asked. We have a husky which I know is often considered dangerous. I'm currently with Allstate but we've had Metlife in the past. My advice instead of calling around to different companies is to use a local insurance broker. They usually do business with 8-10 different companies and will shop the best rate for you.

I would. At my old neighborhood, a middle school aged kid walked into the wrong home and the family dog attacked. Even though it wasn’t her home, the insurance paid out 500k.

His agent did send a quote from Foremost Ins. ( Never Heard of them). He was quoted $1800 for the year. I told him that is nuts, mine is a little more that $500 a year and have better deductibles and more house than he is getting.

Foremost is high risk insurance that’s owned by Farmers.

Almost all insurance companies have breed restrictions due to high risk. Also for those of you that didn’t disclose the breed or asked, you can get dropped by the carrier if they ever find out. You file a claim and insurance adjuster is on site with Rotty barking, they can submit an underwriting review. But that depends on the adjuster and how much they actually “care”.

I used to be an adjuster and still in insurance.

as others pointed out, pair up with an independent agent that can shop for you free of charge.

This is for house insurance? I'm not sure our insurance even knows we have a dog...

She identifies as something and it's not a rotty. Our neighbors say they used to raise rotties. We started taking her on runs when she was a pup. They said rotties don't like to run. Well every weekend she can't wait to get going. When she chases squirrels through the woods, she looks like a damn deer as graceful as she is. If I knew I could get one just like her, I'd be in.

Does sound a bit high but there may be some mitigating circumstances with the coverage driving up that price. Its hard to do a full apples to apples comparison since there are so many other options to increase that price.

I have $295,000 coverage on our home with allstate, $1,500 deductible, at $1100 per year premium. They had the best quote among the others we looked at. They did not ask us about dogs.

I'd stand in an ant pile for $1800 per year homeowners, might do it naked for $500.

I can't remember exactly what we pay but I'm pretty sure it's an order of magnitude lower than our car insurance, which is around $1200 per vehicle.

She is just a doggo loving life!!! There is no such thing as a dangerous breed. There are individual dogs that can become dangerous, but those are few and far between. I can't stand the thinking behind dogs like rotties, German Shepherds, Pitties, Dobermans. They are all fun loving dogs that just want to do do stuff.

Yeah, I was attacked as a child by a dog. I understand the importance just had never thought about checking what I have covered.

    I pay 1650.00 per year for 750,000.00 in coverage + 20%.

I no longer own Rottweilers due to home insurance, but to be honest...my German Shepherd is a lot meaner than my Rott ever was.

As others said, umbrella policies usually aren't that expensive. We pay around $200/year for our umbrella policy. I won't say how much coverage we have but you can probably guess.
