This because if you run out of slugs Buckshot or birdshot you can always pull a plug out of the intruder!

I just can’t get myself to buy anything new/recent from Remington. I have two older Wingmasters that top-notch.

I have and do reccomend the 590a1. Bonus points for it coming with a freaking bayonet! Good for the zombie apocalypse.

This is my favorite. It is also the one that Hollywood uses for just about every scene where you "hear" it being cocked. It has 5 very distinct sounds as you rack in a shell. On noise alone I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of it! 1897 Winchester 12 gauge

I’ve been shot before and couldn’t imagine taking a shot from a 12 gauge. I would say most shot guns would do the trick.

    Curse you Perry the Platypus!
I'm looking at getting a shotgun as well and looking at the 870. What kind of quality issues is Remington having now days?

buy a used 870 or 500 and mod it like your truck...you will end up with a sweet home defense gun. we would all have benelli M2 or M4's if we could afford them, i have a SBE and its awesome but i cannot justify having a $1800 scatter gun

I like the pump and ghost sites.

M4 is a bit pricey for me and didn't like them in Iraq.
They make a good breach gun but that is about it.

Fit and finish. Everything is made a cheap as possible now where before there was a little more time spent on smoothing things out and knocking down sharp edges. Don’t be afraid of buying a used gun if you can find one.

Awesome experience! I have a Maverick 88 as well. I haven’t abused it like you have, but it’s been dead reliable. In my opinion, it’s the best bang for the buck affordable pump shotgun in the market. I looked to get another one last year and gave up when they were all sold out every where I went.

As for used, I really like my $300 1930 Winchester Model 12 in 16 gauge. It has the smoothest action I’ve ever worked. I also have a 1950’s 12 gauge Model 12, and it has a super smooth action as well, but that 16 gauge is like butter.

I would love to have one of those 1897’s! I looked at the trench models with the heat shields and bayonet, but they’re pretty pricey.

It’s all relative. I feel the 870 is a better design, but to answer your question yes Mossberg has better QC than Remington these days. I would feel comfortable with a new 500 or better yet a 590.

They haven't changed all that much over the years.
I would go Remington 870 but it really is preference.

Just dont go around with a bird barrel inside your house.

You can find these things at gun shops/shows and flea markets for a couple hundred bucks.

I gave one to a guy I took shooting because he didnt have one. I taught him how to shoot then I gave hi the one he shot.

I think I’m gonna go with the Mossberg. Anyone have any opinions on a 590 vs a 590a1? From my research, the A1 gets you metal trigger guard, heavy wall barrel and a protective coating. And I think the extra barrel lengthy of 20” is worth the added capacity vs 18.5.

For those that own 500s or 590s, what upgrades would you recommend to make the gun more reliable...if any?

Shockwave should get you done. If you don't like it then use it as your truck gun. :)

If I was looking for a shotgun I would go to the pawnshops and hunt around there. For a home defense type shotgun that is a good place and probably had cheapest place to find what a person is looking for. What ever you have or what ever you decide remember to practice practice practice!!! Under real time actions it is a whole lot different than just thinking about it!! PRACTICE!!!!
