I’m leaning towards a Mossberg 590A1, but I’ve never owned a Mossberg. Remington is our due to QC issues over the past several years. I have plenty of other shotguns for other purposes so like I said, this will be specifically for home defense. I’d be curious to hear what other 590A1 owners have to say or if other members have any other recommendations I should consider.

Mossberg 500 Bantam 20g. Pretty much anybody can wield it and most importantly get follow up shots on target. You can also get a shorter barrel from Mossberg to really make it a shorty, which is great for close quarters. Maybe consider a revolver for bedside. You can leave it loaded forever without the worry of a magazine spring compressing and causing a feed failure. No matter what language you speak, the sound of the pump is universal.

I just want the gun to cycle and go bang and would be willing spend more money for a quality shotgun. I even considered an Ithaca 37 defense but there aren’t any dealers locally that stock them and I don’t know if I have the dedication to try and call around to find an FFL willing to do the transfer and all that to buy it directly from Ithaca.

A Benelli M4 Super 90 was my choice. I like a semi auto over a pump.

My vote for Benelli as well. They have tactical sizes so you don’t have to wield a large barrel around for home protection.

Ditto but no extension. Just removed the delimiter. Pump action tho.

    Too many…scratch that…not done yet.
Mossberg 500 series are killers...Can't go wrong with any model.

I've got MB500 by my headboard, outfitted with the following:
    Magpul foregrip
Powertac E5 (Which IMO a top-quality, fantastic light often overlooked)
    Tru-glo front site
    Side saddle shell holder
    Heatshield

I’m a big Benelli guy myself. I have an SBE2 for bird hunting. Just now looking into their SuperNova tactical. I can’t justify the $$$ for the M4 right now.

The 590A1 is an awesome gun. I loved mine and should have never sold it. I do still have a Mossberg Maverick 88 that is my go-to shotgun now.

Here's a copy pasta of my write up about the gun on a Canadian gun forum and how impressed I am with it:

For a budget gun, the Maverick punches way above it's weight class in terms of reliability. I've been on a multi-year mission to push mine to it's limits and see what it can take.

    - Current round count is somewhere above 10,000. That's a mix of 2 3/4", 3" and 3" magnum shells including birdshot, buckshot and slugs.

    - I have cleaned the gun 3.5 times. The first 3 times were when I cleaned it roughly every 1000 rounds before going on my torture test mission. It has gone nearly 7000 rounds without a cleaning. The half clean was simply a rinse and wipe down of the exterior to remove mud and grime after a swamp test.

    - I've fired it under a few feet of snow

    - I've fired it with the action and barrel jammed with mud and debris

    - I've fired it after dunking it in Alberta muskeg (hence the rinse treatment)

    - I've tossed it out of a moving truck a few times

    - I've fired it in temperatures from +40 down to -40 Celsius

    - I've fired it in freezing rain

    - I've frozen the action shut and fired it

    - I've drop kicked it down a mountainside

    - In one test I loaded, fired, loaded and repeated so quickly and with so many rounds that the barrel began to change color from the heat. I believe the count was 200 ish shells within about 10 minutes give or take (didn't have a timer running) of constant firing and reloading

    - It's been rudely exposed to dust, dirt, grime, mud, ice, snow, water (salt and fresh), swamps, you name it.

    - I've probably abused it in ways I don't even remember.

The gun still looks very good, almost too good. I should put some more scratches in the receiver. LOL.

The only pieces I've replaced have been the mag spring and follower, which are honestly the two weakest pieces in any firearm as far as I'm concerned. That right there is also a testament to Mossberg's customer service. When I mentioned to them the abuse I'd given the gun, they shipped me the mag spring and follower for free. I installed the spring and kept the follower in reserve after upgrading to a S&J Hardware No-Jam follower.

The only other replacement to it will be the butt stock, as I plan to put a Magpul SGA stock on. This is simply to improve the ergonomics as I have a short L.O.P.

Plinking, camping, hunting, war or a zombie apocalypse. If I had to take one gun, my Maverick 88 would be it. This gun has reached legendary status amongst my shooting friends with 1 or 2 nicknaming it the Ak-88, a tribute to it's reliability compared to the Ak-47.

VEPR 12 side folder for home defense. Chiappa lever action 12 T model for fun. One handed if you’re a terminator fan. No mount for it on my Fatboy yet tho.

+1 on the Benelli but look into the Nova rather than the SuperNova. For a bedside/HD gun, save the $100. The SN comes with features you just won't use.

I'd like a Bullpup or AR based 12 gauge too. A guy can dream.

There’s nothing quite like the sound of cycling a pump action shotgun to make someone realize that they have a pressing engagement elsewhere.

The added bonus of a nickel playing for low maintenance and the smooth action of a CNC machined receiver. Oh my goodness.

Some good options for shorter barreled pump & SA 12 gauges here. But I wouldn’t recommend any type of shotgun for “home defense” if you ever plan on hearing again.

It’s not very smart to grab proper ear-pro as you’re trying to listen for an intruder moving through your home. And I promise you you don’t want to rip off any round in your hallway at 3am unless you want to briefly incapacitate yourself with likely permanent hearing loss - not to mention the home renovations you’ll incur when those slugs, 00, or birdshot reach their destination.

Some better options: SBR in a .30 caliber with a can on the end. Subsonic rounds, and a bright light. (I have a very specific one in mind if you’re interested).

Any of the handgun calibers (not starting/entertaining that stupid debate) from 9mm - .45 with a can and light. Red dots are beneficial.

Learn to shoot one handed and opposite handed. So you can open doors and move yourself/ your family to safety while maintaining cover.

You are on the right path looking at the 590. They are great guns and built a little better than a standard 500. I really like my 870 but mine is older. I don’t know if I would buy a new one. May want to look around for a pre freedom group 870 or a police trade in. Periodically these are on sale
    https://aimsurplus.com/leo-trade-in-remington-870-police-magnum-12-gauge-shotgun/

Here is mine. I have put about 2500 rounds through it with the longer barrel hunting and shooting clays so I trust it.
