For home defense I alternate between my 9mm Glock 19 Gen 4 or my HK VP9SK loaded with Federal HST 124 GR hollow points

I love it - It's the "Law Enforcement" model - comes with factory night sights and three 10 round magazines instead of two. It shoots accurately and fits nicely in my hand, and you can customize the grips with the included inserts to fit your hand to your liking. It conceals well (subcompact size) and I feel that its well built, built better than Glock. The only downside is that the magazines are expensive at like $45 or so a pop (since they are all metal) as opposed to he plastic ones from Glock.

Good to know. A good buddy of mine is Madison PD and he carries the VP9 for work. I’ve handled it, but not shot it yet. I’d really like to handle the SK to see if I like the feel equally as well, because I’d rather have that for conceal purposes.

I hear ya! Stop by your local gun shop and ask to see one. There's plenty of options to choose from as far as conceal carry subcompacts go -

WOW...lots of good advice. I say use what you are comfortable with. If you are comfortable with a pistol..use a pistol. I have shotguns in every room in my house. This day and age, it might not be night time when someone breaks in. I'm a huge supporter of practice...practice...practice. The more you use your weapon, the more you can depend on it, in a time of need. I'm like many people here I don't give them a warning, always have it chambered. There are many, many home defense rounds out there today. Just remember the after consequence, shooting someone is not as easy as some think. Well let me rephrase, it's easy to shoot someone, it's not always easy dealing with what you just did. Never mind making a mess, yes it is messing shooting someone. Don't be afraid of seeking help.

As long as you choose a firearm of good quality and dependability, and become very familiar (not comfortable) with it then it should serve your purpose. Take it out to the range, run 300-400 hundred rounds through it to makes sure it functions as expected and get the familiarization.

As far as shotgun vs handgun... whatever you choose, consider taking a CQB training class to learn the different techniques for each.

A home with an open floor plan might more suitable for a shotgun. A home with narrow hallways and lots of rooms/corners may be more suitable for a handgun.

Learning how to retain your firearm in the event of an attacker/intruder getting close enough is recommended.

Get training. Practice. Practice. Practice. Stay Safe.

Yup shotgun is definitely the home defense classic. Keep my 870 tube loaded with first 2 being plastic bee-hive rounds to really drive the point home that you done and messed up but still have an out, then the rest of the tube is alternating 00 buck and 3" magnum slugs in case they are really dense and don't get the point.

In regards to shotguns (ignoring the HANDGUN part of the title) I just picked up this bullpup shotgun last week, mainly because it was cool and unique, but it'd probably be a decent home defense gun. Just ordered some 9rd magazines for it, and there's even 19rd magazines if you really like to party.

    Yes.
Ive been through several training classes with handguns , carbines , and shotguns. Everyone touting the 12ga shotgun as "ideal" has probably not tried to drive a Remington 870 around a tight door frame and clear a dark room. Its not easy. and yes, even #8 birdshot will blast through drywall.
A fist going 30 feet per second will punch through 3/8 drywall , so any projectile going over 1000 feet per second will do the same.
Even a 10" SBR rifle is difficult without proper training and reps.
Handguns work for alot of reasons. Carbines work too, but add a layer of complexity with fine motor movements when adrenaline and stress are involved.
12ga buckshot will go through your wall, into the hallway , and through the bathroom door. distances inside homes are real short. Shotgun and rifle rounds are made to go the distance to target and make impact.
A 9mm with JHP is what i use . Capacity and simplicity . How many targets are you going to engage ? are they armed? can you drive that 12ga over/under fast enough to engage and then reload after your first shot misses?

I agree with what some of the others have said here. Proficiency and practice should be the number one priority. My personal choice is a full size 9mm loaded with JHPs and an attached white light.

I miss my gen 4 G19. I had to sell it this past summer to buy a new cab for my Tacoma. Guy I sold it to said I can buy it back for the same price when/ if I can. The glock was my backup HD gun with a 32 rd mag. It stayed in the living room in case I was there and someone broke in.

I know this is an old thread but fwiw I bought this pistol for the house and it’s perfect. I keep it in a small safe in my nightstand. S&W 9mm cost about $300.
