I would also recommend a good quality gun belt.
    I wear a 5.11 Tac belt.
It may be a little much and there are more stylish belts out there but it was a christmas gift for me a couple years back.
    https://www.511tactical.com/operator-belt-1-34-wide.html

With my regular leather belts I can pull my holster out of my pants with the gun even with a perfect draw. The tac belt keeps the holster in place very well and will stay put no matter if you have a sloppy purchase or not.

If they get past the (2) malinois it's my 357 SIG or her 9mm. Beyond that, we move to get to the ARs and a milk crate full of loaded mags.

We have zero children in the house, but for the dogs. With children IMHO I'd go with a 9mm and 158gr subsonic loads, locked into a biometric safe that is childproof, and bolted to the nightstand.

I still thank the lord you came out okay on that tragic day. Remember, everything else including firearms are just replaceable material items. Although you swore not to replace them.

As previously stated, the best option is to be extremely proficient with the weapon of choice and to have it available. The one other piece of advice is to acquire a rail mounted light (e.g., streetlight) that you can momentarily activate or keep on full time. At night and in your home, this can be invaluable. Buy quality with high lumens, as it can also be a defensive weapon when shined in an assailant's eyes.

Not trying to argue here, but hearing is the last of my worries if there is an intruder in my home. I don’t believe in racking a shotgun to scare off would be thieves either. If you garnish a weapon it means you and/or your family are in imminent danger and are willing to use it. I think you’d be surprised at the decibel level of .40/.45 caliber round vs a shotgun shell......they’re not that far off. Fine motor skills are one of the first things you abandon in a high pressure, fight or flight scenario - in my training it is much easier to ready a shotgun and actually have success at downing your target vs a pistol. YMMV

When the shit hits the fan your hearing (in my experience) actually kinda turns off if you will, not sure what the real term for it is.
"Racking the shotgun scares them off" is in the top 5 of the dumbest gun comments ever. If you don't already have one in the hole. you're doing it wrong.

Who was it that coined the phrase "You pistol is to get you back to the rifle you never should have left in the first place"?

I can understand you not worrying about your hearing. But me, I have very sensitive ears and if I don’t wear ear plugs at work I’ll go home with ringing and pain in my ears. And that’s just from operating an impact gun, bead breaker, and hearing tires hiss as they’re deflating.
My ears hurt and ring even after firing shotguns with hearing protection.
I have trained in with pistols in high stress scenarios and consider myself very proficient. I can shoot subsonic 9mm through my suppressor without hearing protection and remain proficient under stress. That’s why my choice of weapon and suppressor makes sense for me.

I believe people should train and be proficient with all their weapons and choose whatever works best for them for home protection.

The sound of chambering a round in a pump action shotgun simply gives an armed intruder your location.
This thread is full of fail with a touch of good advice...

No, it's a quiz show joke and You WIN the prize! THE prize is a one-way ticket OUT of Texas! [Still in Texas, seriously?]

To the OP; you can join the NRA and find a Nationwide network of trainers and their NRA based classes for Basic Pistol, Home Defense pistol, and on and on for more specific activities like re-loading. The great benefit is that you are learning on an actual curriculum developed over the last decades. Plus, you get to meet other people in the same boat, which will fail crossing the nearest lake and deposit all your "black guns" at the bottom. (Colion Noir) Have fun, do some shooting with a friend for family member.

Walther Creed with a light/laser my reasoning is .. This Gun was significantly cheaper than any of my others it shoots good and never failed. This is the ONLY gun other than whatever im carrying that's accessible and not locked in a safe. IF someone breaks in and I am not home to welcome them, i'd rather be out this gun than any of my others..

I have a number of pistols.

Just train with what you have, whatever that is. Not just shooting. Maneuvering. Tactics and room clearing. Going around corners. A long gun is more awkward to maneuver and present at go time. People snap them up, load them, then just leave them by the bed not understanding this. It is not hard for pretty much any decent shooter to drive tacks with a decent semi auto rifle or make a paper target disappear at 5 years with a few shotgun blasts. I've gone out and watched new shooters who picked up a semi auto rifle for the first time put everything in the bullseye at 25 yards after a practice mag or two. It's all of no use though if you end up fumbling with it in an emergency while the bad guy just draws a pistol from his waistband and starts blasting away. Practice your movements.

I am more comfortable with pistols so I keep pistols for home defense. 9mm Glock, a Sig,Springfield .45 1911, 9mm Colt 1911. Been shooting them readily for 20 years, so it's natural. Practiced reloads, malfunction clearing, mag exchanges, movements, etc... to the point where I don't have to think about any of it. I just stick to what I know.

The only thing that is always empty is my .44. I just see no use for it as a home defense gun with my other options.

Best tool is the one you're most comfortable and best trained with.
