I have a 2013 - it takes the bigger sd card. I ordered a newer microsd card and an adapter so it would fit in my truck. It would not work...

I'm guessing because the files used for the updates are different. Previous gen used CD and newer used SD I'm guessing. Files, file formatting and encrypting are different. Its looking for a specific flash file/container which you dont have formatted.

I believe all the Toyota SD cards have IDs associated with them which makes it impossible to copy one and make a bunch of SDs to put in other trucks... I hope it works so we can all do it but I don't think we have any hope...

Correct but for your specific MY I believe the updates were used via CD - now they are SD. Formatting and file containers and such are all different which is why I dont think your update worked.

Using a micro to normal size SD via adaptor won't really change anything IMO because its pulling the dataset/specific data from the micro, so any and all ID will still be valid. But if your HW is calling for certain files via a CD instead of SD - it wont work.

My model year is updated via SD card, I understand what you're saying about it not working in my case though. The issue is that toyota is not giving things away because that's bad business. They are also not going to make it so that you can simply copy one SD card, and make a bunch of copies of it to use in other trucks. Same goes for the software, they're not going to make the software free to get, and then be able to be copied to a bunch of SD cards. If they did this, the dealer wouldn't charge $160 to do a map update.

You can try it, it's just your money and time you're wasting.

I guess my research skills are much lacking, everything I see for 2013 is a CD not SD.

This on many different levels. I attempted to even clone the micro sd to see if that would work to no avail. Seems that's the first thing stolen from the trucks on the lot :-/. Some dealers are even leaving them out of the vehicle until delivery. It's really sad Toyota is so far behind with the GPS/MicroSD card system.

map updates should just be OTA through Entune, or just use the maps off the connected device instead of trying to reinvent the wheel yourself (Toyota). But... then they wouldn't make money off of it.

Tried it this morning but could not find the stage in the radio that downloads to the card. My radio does have a micro SD, I took it out and ran the garmin app as instructed but it did not recognize the card. I very much prefer to have a stand alone device like portable nav or in car nav. Relying on the phone doesn't work when you go places where you loose data all the time. (Camping trips etc>)

I'm probably just going to pay the dealer to do it at my next oil change. $160 they quoted me.... gotta pay to play I guess.

Ask them to show you how or what they are using for the update on your truck - SD, CD, etc...id be curious.

Just upgraded beginning of the week to 184. I can notice a lot more detail, and some new roads - have yet to really go off the beaten path.

One cool feature I just noticed (dont think I had it before) was tracking. It will record your tracks. So far after a quick ignition cycle the recorded track remains. I will see what happens at the end of the business day. My guess it keeps the record until you turn the feature off.

Well it retained the previously tracked information and it continues tracking as I drive.

... now to try to figure out if I can take the tracks, put them on my computer and view them in Google Earth or Garmin Basecamp to see if those tracks are shareable. Far fetched yes lol

Garmin has an app for iPad/iPhone it runs $29 per year and yes it work with no cell service just gps. I have it set up on an iPad mini on the center console. You can download very detailed topos with satellite images to boot. Also have the Bluetooth Ultragauge set up. Great set up low cost and very detailed maps. I'm in the mini under $200 with an indestructible case. I'm sure ther is an option for google or android. The best news is it's constantly up to date.

If it's like mine, not sure what version I'm on, but it will slowly over time lose where you've been. It keeps track of a week or so if I remember.

Can you load GPX files created in Garmin basecamp or stuff that's been downloaded from the internet into the mini\into the Garmin app on it?

I'm not that familiar with creating GPX files. You may create routes with waypoints and save those. There is a sync function as well.

    Unknowingly you are familiar :)

If you can create routes/waypoints and save them and sync - Garmin saves them as GPX.

Will the attached route upload your Garmin app?

I agree. I paid almost $40k for my truck and about a year later got a letter from Toyota saying I can get my map updated for $700...WHAT? I have an old Garmin that has FREE map updates for life and I only paid about $200 for it.

I complain about that on EVERY Toyota questionnaire I get...EVERY one...hopefully someone does something about that ridiculousness.

    Gentlemen,

I believe that Toyota recently made a new Navigation Maps update available on micro SD card. The part number is 86271-0E185. If I am not mistaken it supposed to replace the 86271-35015 card, which has 2017 maps.

I am still on 2015 version (Map Version: 05-35-51 2015-05-01). Toyota wants a lot of money for this card and I am not in position to pay it. So, I am wondering if anyone who already has 86271-35015 or 86271-0E185 maps in his/her truck is willing to copy the files from that card and share with the community. Be prepared that it could easy take a couple hours from your busy life (20 min. to copy files to a local drive + uploading it to some cloud share like https://1fichier.com/), but it is a good karma to help. Good karma always returns back. :)

Yes, I am aware that there is no current (easy) way to copy that information to some other memory card and make that new card work in another truck. But I have relevant skills and time now (taking a couple months from work) and want to check on a couple promising ideas that I have.

How would this benefit the other guys?! It is simple... In case I am successful, the rest of our Toyota 4x4 community will benefit from my findings.

Let me know here (or in private), if you have the information that I am looking for and want to join the project.

    Thank you in advance!

Bought my current card off eBay, no issues.

*should have specified, bought my 184 off eBay. Have yet to really.look much into 185. Simply posted some 185s on eBay right now .Much cheaper than going through a dealership .

for those prices, you can get a new 5" garmin w/o the lockouts and free map updates and still have money left over. and if you have multiple vehicles, you only have to pay 1 price, or use your phone. but I am not a person to dual use a phone as a nav on a dedicated trip. if its a short jaunt, phone is great, but when I travel 1700 miles I want a dedicated nav.

From my experience, most usually start at $250 initially. You can try to haggle with them. Then after a few months I have seen it drop to about $125/$150 at the dealer.

Then they usually try to tack on an install fee.
