So, Im getting tired of spending a bunch of $ for crappy pre workout sups and am about to experiment and make my own. This is the concoction that I am looking at:
    -6 grams of citrulline malate
    -2 grams of beta alanine
    -200 mg of caffeine
    -12 grams of Gatorade powder

Has anyone done anything like this? Looking for any advice before I make a "build" thread.

I never use preworkout. Waste of money IMO. Just eat an apple and drink 30g protein 15 mins before

Curious as well. Fitness is a HUGE part of my life/job, but Marines are essentially the cavemen of the military and have a very large "bro" demographic so any professional advice from someone actually knows about this type of stuff would be appreciated.

405 x 3. Form isn't as good as i normally go for but last time i went that heavy i could only do a single. I had the strength for 2 more reps, i bet, but the form started to feel worse so i decided to stop. Also hit a new squat PR of 375, which is sad because that was my bench PR last week, lol.

BUT I'm focusing a lot more on lower body and feel GOOD "AF", as the kids are saying these days, and am making solid gains. The squat PR is a 40 pound PR from two weeks ago.

    Ah
ah, got you. I already drink coffee in the mornings and the caffeine in preworkouts usually increase my daily RDA over the limit and caffeine dehydrates you, before a workout that just ain't a good idea. Besides that, you're giving your hear an essential "jolt" making it beat faster, do more work, then you exert yourself even more. Seems too overkill for me.
Fruit gives me fructose and a boost in energy since carbs are our main sources of fuel, plus it's absorbed relatively quickly (not as fast as monodisaccharides (simple sugars) so gives me a longer, more sustained source of fuel and the protein helps preserve any catabolism that may take place during workout. (I may take some BCAA's instead if my protein doesn't have enough) plus two helpings of whey protein after to keep my body in an anabolic state, decrease cortisol levels (and more catabolism).

But pres also come in stim free. There are many other factors than just caffeine to consider in a pre. Hell, I consume mine around 45 mins post pre raining meal. This way it's absorbed much easier...I drink around a gallon of water a day so I'm not too concerned with dehydration.

Regarding the apple. Why not just a sweet potato (or even a bagel, banana etc) and shake? It'll make for a great, steady releasing pump ;)

Post- are you adding any carbs in it? I love my kids cereal post. I can almost guarantee anyone here you will not add any body fat to your frame so long as the carbs are scheduled peri workout.
Hell, get some Karbolyn and pound that during your training. The pump and hydration will thank you.

Yeah, I am putting a scoop of gatorade powder for electrolytes (insert Idiocracy meme here) as well as some carbs. I wake up at 3 and hit the gym first thing before my day starts so some I need some form of fast acting carbs.

You're right about the stimulant free pres. those are fine, but I prefer to get some Nutritional content with preworkout.
I advise against preworkout because most guys -or BROS - I train always want every supplement under the sun that's advertised in Flex magazine. I had one client that was on preworkouts, fat burner, NOS2 (a vasodilator for pumps), and drinking three to five monster drinks a day. Not just that but these guys don't give two shits about hydration. If you drink enough water throughout the day, you're fine, but if you think anything fluid is considered "hydration", you're an idiot. And that's what I usually work with so anytime someone asks me about that, that's my default stance but if they know their shit like you obviously do and FOLLOW it, you're fine.

Oh I always eat a sweet potato an hour before my workout or a cup of brown rice. The fruit is just a little extra energy for my workout, I was thinking in terms of immediately before. Exactly what I do for what you said, sustained energy.

LOL my post workout is chock full of simple carbs. I came up with an "anabolic scramble" that i eat an hour after my whey and 1 cup raisin immediate post meal

Two cups of white rice mixed with two eggs and 50g of ground meat or steak mixed together with salsa.

Trust me, I ain't worried about body fat at the intensity I go at it plus two or three days of weighted vest 30 minute HITT sprints. I stay pretty stable at between 10-15%. I just cut my carbs a little, up my protein and fat when I need to come down to 10%.

What's your plan on referees typically as far as macros? When do you feel a refeed is necessary?

Typically during the week I'll follow a strict bulking diet 205 G protein, 405 g carbs, and about 82 g fat nothing but clean foods. On Sunday I just aim for 600-700 g in carb intake and include some carb laden foods like donuts, chocolate milk, pizza, etc. when I'm bulking, I like one full day out of the week and when I'm cutting I'll only allow myself two cheat meals per week. That's what I've found works best for me. You?

I should reword my question :anonymous:

Are you lowering your protein and fats on a refeed? Do you aim your refeed around a certain body part that needs help to grow?

I'm not currently doing refeeds (getting back there though) but typically my refeed is 3x the amout of fast digesting carbs, and my fat and protein are lowered. My refeed carbs consist of intra shakes, rice cakes, pop-tarts etc

Think of your body as a car. The lower the gas in the tank is, the more gas it takes to fill. Translated to bodybuilding....the leaner you get the bigger the refeed you need. Essentially you push the diet hard, you get leaner and more depleted....then you refeed. The refeed will top of your tanks (glycogen stores) and also increase metabolism....sort of like throwing gas on a fire that is starting to go out. The leaner you are the emptier your "gas tanks" are and the more fuel you need to top them off. Also, since your metabolism should be high and training is intense you may find you run out of gas quicker and need to increase the frequency of refeeds. Think again of your car. You will burn more gas racing around like a Nascar driver than you will when out for a Sunday drive.

I'm also not a fan of dairy products. The digestion rate is way too slow.

I think you're thinking of my question geared towards free (cheat) meals and not refeeds.

I see what you mean. Yeah some people call cheat meals "refeeds" some don't.

In that case, no i don't do refeeds, but I will do a "super compensation" at the end of a keto cycle when my insulin sensitivity is extremely high and include the same things you do (rice cakes, pop tarts, and even fruit juices) I'll only do a 2 or 3 week Keto cycle about twice a year.
I usually never go below 10% body fat. I've gotten down to 7% and it was too lean for me.
I love dairy products on cheat days, but only drink them sparingly during the week (in the AM)
That's a good analogy using a car to explain glycogen stores!
