One thing to remember about BJJ, especially if you've trained in other martial arts... The rank progression is slow. But I think that's because it is the most 'honest" art. You can't fake BJJ with a fancy Kata or Form. It's tap or be tapped!

Years ago I trained in American Karate and Aikido. Progression to Black Belt in those arts was a little over 3 years. Then life took over; kids, wife, work.. and I left the martial arts. Now that I'm an old geezer with a little more time, I started BJJ a little over 3 years ago. A BJJ Black Belt takes 8-10 years in most cases. I'll get there eventually, but it's less about the rank and more about the lifestyle and fitness that comes with BJJ. I highly recommend the Gracie system. I train under Travis Lutter (of UFC fame) who received his Black Belt under Carlos Machado, who recieved his Black Belt under Carlos Gracie, Jr.

    Just do it!!!

3 sets, 2 reps 415 on a duffalo bar. Never done this weight without a spotter so there was a lot of mental block. Third set I had a spotter and it was so damn easy I thought about doing 2-3 more sets with 3-5 reps.

Nice!! I've tried low bar, but so damn weird to me LOL
but hey, 20-30% increase in weight vs high bar, don't blame you!

As for a spotter, I always use the catch bars in a power rack in place of a spotter.

I've always done low bar honestly. I just feel more balanced with low bar, I had been squating into the 400s before ever trying high bar and I'm just too uncomfortable with it once I hit any higher weight.

Also, weather it be wide body/long ass arms or immobility (probs immobility to be honest but I tried for months to get shoulder mobility and couldn't) I almost have to use that mono lift so I can move arms in closer and have a wider grip on the bar.

well since this thread is alive and well.. I'm just going to post a workout rant... I've had to spend the last two weeks in hotels in Denver for work and hotel gyms suck balls... to the point i've just not bothered to try so I've been trying to cram in a week's worth of workouts from Friday night through Monday morning. I'm leaving again at the butt crack of dawn tomorrow - hopefully this hotel will have a decent (ish) gym - I've stayed there before and not hated it as much as the other recent ones... But just in case, I just churned out 60 minutes on my concept 2 for good measure.

Also... working out in denver sucks... I can't breathe after walking up a flight of stairs.

Hope everyone else's workouts are going according to plan!

Just do what I do, get a TRX and knock it out in the room. Helluva lot better than hotel gyms.

Got mine off Craigslist for 100 bucks.

Yeah that makes sense. Definitely a given being more balanced on low bar since we're taller and got more than a few inches to stabilize. That's why I have to hit a slightly wider-than-shoulder-width stance when I squat.
I've got freaking long limbs and femurs, I basically have to lean way forward on low bar, limiting me mainly on high bar. It sucks but it works LOL

Ha... I've seen the videos you post of your gym - this is one week i'm happy to not have a rental car booked! ;)

I'm thinking of relocating there - or at least to that office - not sure where we'd live. I think if i moved, I'd def want to head to a gym like that!

Finally, a forum that is my specialty. I train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu 3x a week and Strength Train 5x a week. I work in outside sales so I plan my trips where I can roll at a local BJJ gym and also train at a hotel with a decent weight set up. BJJ is my third Martial Art and I am a 3 stripe Blue Belt. I also have Black Belt in Karate and a 2nd Dan Black Belt in TaeKwonDo.

If anyone is looking to get in amazing shape and get some combat skill, try a BJJ class. One is all it takes and I guarantee you will be hooked.

Tried Beyond Raw Lit PreWorkout for the first time today and heres my thoughts for anyone who gives a shit

Taste/Texture: I had the Iced Tea/Lemonade flavor and it was the best tasting preworkout Ive ever had. I could actually sip on it and enjoy it instead of chugging it. Container was all powder with no clumps at all. Mixed well

Physical Effects: I drink quite a bit of caffeine. Usually drink at least 1-2 cups of coffee or 1 energy drink a day plus a diet coke so Im no stranger to caffeine. This stuff has 250mg of caffeine and there was a point on the drive to the gym where I had the prickly feeling on my skin the most intense Ive ever felt it. It went away after a minute or 2, but it actually freaked me out for a second. Once I was in the gym I noticed a significant improvement. I lifted 4x12 for most of my sets. I felt like I could lift more than normal and I got a pretty good pump from it as well. It may have been a placebo effect, but well see after a week or so.

Mental Effects: I was definitely more mentally focused throughout my workout. I only zoned out and went on twitter once in between sets lol.

Overall I am very happy with this pre workout. Amazing taste and fantastic energy boost. Ill attach my workout I did. I would recommend this preworkout to anyone that has a higher caffeine tolerance than normal or looking for a new pre workout. However I wouldnt recommend to a beginner. Get a few less intense pre workouts under your belt bc ive been taking preworkout for around 5 years and this thing hit me like a truck.

$40 from the nutrition store (about $1.33 per scoop) and I love it so far!

    Workout (Shoulders, back, bi)

    Vbar pulldowns
    Straight arm rope pulldowns
    Preacher Curls
    Low grip rows
    Dumbell rows
    21's curls
    Ab superset
    7 Hill sprints

I feel like im forgetting something but that looks about right. Like I said most things were 4 sets and 12 reps.

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
Dang, so many muscle-heads on here!

The only weights, I use to work-out with, besides my own body weight, are adjustable dumbbells. The last time I benched, squatted, etc, any weights was 2009.

I miss the days of High School, when I could work out all I wanted and had plenty of time to do it. My goal was 30 Clean consecutive pull-ups. Never made it but got close, 27 max clean pull-ups.

Nowadays, maybe, 8 clean pull-ups. I need to start working out again...

Some motivation for folks to get back in the gym or at least doing something active to stay in shape.

Suffered a spinal cord injury and had to have a disc removed and a spinal fusion in the summer of 2014, spent 4 months in the hospital and got enough feeling and movement back be able to walk again (took 3 months to build up enough muscle to support my body weight and learn how to walk again).

This is just about 2 years later and about 6 months back in the gym. (365 lbs. for those that don't want to math)

All natural. Don't want heart or joint problems later down the road. Just trying to shred. M,W,F-lifting. Tues, Thur and Sat-Cardio. Not bad for a 43 y/o. At least that's what my 27 y/o Fiancé says.

    Damn brother! I hear you!

I suffered from a staph infection a few years ago. For some reason unknown to the doctors even today, it affected my ability to move anything that was connected to my torso. Any movement in my shoulders, hips or knees would result in excruciating pain localized around my sciatic nerve. I could barely lay down, making staying comfortable and pain free an impossible challenge.

10 day stay at the hospital

2 months walking with a walker

    1 month with a cane

Lost about 50 lbs and 2 months later, could barely squat just the bar.

now my squat is 225 for 8 and deadlift is 375 for 5

helluva journey when you're fighting pain like that aint it?

    You have no idea LOL

But hey, whatever life is, we all have our own hurdles. One persons hurdle(s) aren't bigger or harder than the other simply because it's theirs.

As long as you don't give up, you'll get that sumbitch tore down!! LOL

Ahh, those pesky knees. It does help to have those working correctly. Even though Jiu Jitsu translates to "Gentle Art", it's all relative.

Yup... it's definitely a lot more fun when you have knee mobility.
