If I do a cut style diet will I still be able to make the gains I have been? I eat pretty carb heavy right now, if I don't I just have zero energy.

Strength gains will be small but muscle size wise - next to nothing.

The higher protein intake is to maintain muscle size so you don't lose any while cutting.

Try eating some fruit and a scoop of protein powder 15 mins before or complex carb 45 mins before (plus the protein shake 15 mins before) that should give you enough energy for the session

Funny you say that, a friend of mine in his mid 40's, who has always ran, started lifting about 5 years ago. He was just saying how he mentioned to his doctor how he has been busting his butt for a few years and hasn't built much muscle. Doctor told him it's because of his age.

I have to say I have done workouts with him, he works out properly and intensely. I'm wrapping up a 6 week program now and I noticed some results. I'm sure it won't always be like that!

You can still get jacked in your 40s for sure. It all depends on intensity, diet and recovery

    Ehhhh I gotta disagree.
You can gain muscle at just about any age. It's not like you automatically stop gaining Friend of mine I used to work with was in his 50's and was a BEAST but didn't get serious until he was about 40 ish. A lot goes into gaining mass such as diet (protein consumption changes as you age), testosterone levels, right supplements and right workout plan (some people are dominantly type 1 fibers, some are type 2 etc) just have to find what works for you personally. I gained the most weight when I kept my reps between 6-8. If the guy ran a lot, most likely his muscles became dominantly type 1 (IIRC) meaning higher reps would work better for him (or is it the other way around? I forget )

    ALSO....two things

    1. Doctors know absolutely JACK SHIT about gaining muscle and the like. Case in point....I'm at a doctors appointment when I was 225 (I'm 6'3") and 10%. After the checkup, the doc looks at my chart and says "your BMI is really high, I think you should look into some weight loss programs..." I look at him and say "doc, you have a higher body fat percentage than I do, you see me right now or are you just trying to be funny?" He proceeds to "explain" how BMI works. I'm a trainer...I know exactly how BMI works and exactly how outdated and redundant it is. Not to mention the amount of doctors that are completely and utterly out of shape, yet proceed to tell people how to stay in shape?
Seriously? That would be like me telling a woman how to put a tampon in, put on nail polish, and how to put foundation on. Ain't gonna end up well.

    2. I've had 60 year old clients put on 15 pounds of muscle mass in 8 months from a completely sedentary lifestyle to more energy than they've had in years.

I'm with you 100%. He is messing up in other areas (diet and type of workouts not geared toward building muscle mass). I do think (total assumption, zero science behind this statement) if he did the same thing at 25 yoa things would come easier for him.

Y'all crazy. Both of these guys are my great friends. The one with the gigantic legs, (Dylan) owns the gym I go to. Think he's 47? Not sure. Well respected, and very humble.

The other guy, (grey shirt) is my buddy Rich. Think he just hit 68 now.

Another word regarding those family doctors...... If you have an lifting injury, go see a physiotherapist. No family doctor is going to be able to tell you that you have a weak infraspinatus and what to do in order to fix it. I suffered for 6 months with my shoulder. I have a degree in kinesiology and I couldn't figure it out. My dad is a family doctor and he couldn't figure it out. Physiotherapist puts me through a few tests, tells me to keep going to the gym with reduced weight, gives me exercises to do and then says you will be better in 2-3 weeks. Didn't even try to book me back in, he just knew that I would be fixed up if I did what he said, because it was so obvious for him with his training. 3 weeks later shoulder feels stable again, back to proper weights.

Family Doc's spend way more time on stuff going on with internal organs etc to be able to properly diagnose whats going on with muscles and joints. The good ones would freely admit that their knowledge base on sport injuries is limited and point you in the direction of someone who can actually help!

    Completely agree!

I have about ten years of personal training experience behind me. I can normally figure simple stuff out, but in no way am I on the level of a physiotherapist, nor will I try to act like I am. If what I suggest doesn't work out, I'd freely say "that's got me stumped, go see a physio".

If something's wrong with the organs, yes, go see a doctor, but as far as biomechanics and kinesiologic problems, that won't do you any good.

That would be like going to see a psychiatrist for a hemorrhoid problem. LOL

Maybe for really bad hemorhoids? Bad bum problems gotta get a person feeling down. Just don't ask that type of Doc to look at your ass to check your treatment progress.

Anyone have any success with a KB only workout? I've been out of the gym 6 months plus and was thinking of doing the 100 K.B. swings/day eventually easing into the 500/day over the next few months. They've been one of my best successes in loosing weight in the past.

    Those are brutal!

Great for core work and overall body power. Go for it and cut into sets if need be (4 sets of 25, 10x10, etc)

I have been getting tired of having such a bad leg day hangover and have started doing something about it. Right after legs I take some Ibuprofen. Take it for a couple of days and I don't have to do as much wondering

You know it was a good leg day when your legs are shaking post leg workout and it hurts to breathe.
