It is not political. You are stating factual data obtained from open sourcing. Stand your ground.

From the article: "the State would no longer allow them to operate repeaters on public land without paying substantial rental fees" Actually, it appears that the state has figured out how to tax them.

No problem here man. I just wanted to keep the thread on topic since I enjoy the conversation. It is quite relevant as well.

Called Bullet Proof again and they should have them ready to ship in December or January. Expensive option though at probably the $300 range.

I was going to attempt to fab one up for my truck, but if these get made, I'll probably save myself the time and just fork over the money.

Are the cables built in with these? Or can you use your own?

They include the cable also. Let me check how long it is and what type.

@lewi3069 Nice write up. I am going to be picking up the MXT 275 for my wife and I. One question on mounting the antenna, I know drilling the roof is the best possible position and there is loss when mounting other places. I have seen the pictures and get it. My question is how much loss is there. For example (assuming all variables are the same) roof mounted and ditch light mounted sitting next to each other. The roof can send and receive clearly for 10 miles, how far can the ditch bracket is there a 1 mile loss an 8 mile loss. We are mainly interested in upgrading from hand helds and communicating vehicle to vehicle usually with in seeing distance and calling for the kiddos to come back to camp. I want to avoiding drilling the roof and am looking at mounting on leitner rack at top of rack or ditch with the midlands 6db antenna. I just don't want to lose too much.

I think most of the distance loss will come from the direction the signal radiates. I am by no means a professional of RF, but have done a good amount of research. That's why I chose a roof mount. To be honest I expected it to be a lot harder and more involved to install. The obvious pros from a center roof mount is unobstructed transmission with zero loss in gain.

Now how does that equate to miles of RX/TX lost, it's hard to say. If you ditch mount to the same type of car or truck it will be an equivalent loss, but if using a car and a truck it would be different with a ditch mount as the cab of a truck sits higher than the cab of a car and would introduce more signal blockage. In any case I almost went with a side of hood mount until I saw the following charts of loss and signal propagation. A loss of say -2 or -2.4 db pretty much negates a 3db gain antenna. I'm not sure it's the worst and there are a few other members that have gone with a ditch mount. Maybe they can chime in on the range they have experienced. I think the best bet would to use the leitner rack like you mentioned and use something to create a ground plane like this. You could mount that inbetween the NMO mount and bracket when you put everything together. If it's at the top of the rack it would simulate a roof mount I believe. I almost did the same with my rack that I built (https://www.tundras.com/threads/tonneau-capable-bed-rack-rails.42036/), but I don't always leave the rack or rails on and wanted to have the radio available all the time.

I haven't had the opportunity to really test the radios out for range from car to car. My wife and I did how ever test from our Condo (Garmin Rino 650 handheld) while I drove into town (roof mounted MXT275) with my Browning BR2445 on top. We were able to speak roughly 1.5 miles with her in the condo on the main level. There was no way we would make it more than 0.5 miles down the road while using a handheld on both sides. While not the best test, it shows that just getting the antenna out of the cab of the truck really helps.

Hopefully that helps explain things. Like I said I'm no expert, but with the research I have done I think everything I stated is pretty accurate. If not I hope someone else can chime in and correct me.

Thanks for the advice. I talked with a midland rep and they apparently have custom vehicle mounts and a flexible antenna coming out soon. So I will wait and see until then and try out using the one it comes with.

It states “for off road use only”. Is that legit you think or just a standard “don’t put your kid in the yeti cooler” sticker?

I will give them a call.

Not sure. Call them or Evil Mfg. It has brake and running lights, even cargo lights... Might be due to reflectivity or lack there of? Most likely it's because it's not SAE compliant or DOT certified.

I moved my post to the ham section but I do have a valid gmrs license as well and discovered a modification forr my HAM to use the GMRS frequencies. If anyone is interested I'll post my results using a Yaesu FTM-400XDR VHF/UHF transciever.

So this is how you do it, super simple. It's the MARS modification and common on many US region HAM radios.
