New truck values will start dropping alot quicker than used truck values. Why?
Because rates have forced those that used to turn over their trucks every 2-3 years to keep them now. because the payments are too high or not practical compared to the pandemic rates they got 2 -3 years ago.
Manufacturers will start having inventory again this year and you will be able to buy a truck you could not get before - off a lot.
One search on Autotrader shows a number of even a 1/2 dozen Tundras (small prod. numbers compared to the Big 3) available to buy and coming in mid -May within a 50 mile radius of my house. I know its not your cup of tea. Just using it as an exampled of supply on a very limited run vehicle.

Look - I am not a betting man unless it is based on a real supply and demand scenario - however.
If you like your truck - do not a need new fancy truck - your truck has no issues we know of, and you are the original owner it is just getting broken in at 6 years 100k. I would take that truck with known history, do proper maintenance, over any pandemic built vehicles until enough time has passed, and we know the issues have been sorted. As soon as you hit the first problem with a new truck, and they tell you to park it because there are no parts - well I would be pissed.
When parts depts have lots of stock on all needed parts - we will know things have passed and moving to the norm.

I am going back on my earlier statement....the more I see the new Tundras, the uglier they get (and more pissed I get that Toyota had to f*ck them up)!!

Somewhat subjective and ranty. Why not buy yourself '20/21 model year if you want to freshen things up a bit or keep your '17DC, skip a couple of generations until Toyota builds a custom truck for Dan-o! Call 'er good

And tell me you want to drive a vehicle that you thinks looks and "feels" like crap. To each his own - you like the new Tundras, more power to you, enjoy. Hard pass for me.

I drive a '21. I love it. I also don't feel the need to express my anger at how the 3rd gen looks. I don't drive a truck for its looks. I drive a truck because I need the actual utility of a truck, which is apparently a rare thing these days.

I did go back and read your OP, and I agree with some of the other issues you mentioned (extremely long hood, smaller interior space). But also, why bump a month-old thread just to say how mad you are at the way the 3rd gen looks?

That's what I did and I'm not disappointed.
Not super easy though and I had to pay top dollar. Finding the exact truck you want is hard enough. Finding it at a reasonable price is even harder. And if you pause for 5 min to think about it, it'll be sold.
Anyone wants a 20/21, you better start shopping yesterday.

F350 7.3 gas or gm hd 6.6/10 speed will be my next truck. After three tundras I have no interest in the third gen or it’s obscene pricing

Not sure why anybody would pay 60k+ for a half ton when you can get an hd truck for the same money or less.

Fair enough, well I can use it and its capacity, thus still having zero interest in the new tundra or it’s stupid price tag.

Having completely rebuilt my '08 4.7L Tundra's rear axle (real PIA), I can attest the rear wheel bearings are overbuilt. As large in diameter as most 3/4 ton trucks I'd say, and there are two roller bearings per side. Other half-tons often have only one bearing per side. And even if they have two per side, I doubt they're as large as the Tundras.

And these bearings were on the smaller axle for the 4.0's and 4.7's! The 5.7 has a much beefier differential, and I'm assuming beefier axles and bearings to match.

Larger bearings by definition require larger diameter axles, always a good thing in any truck.

The rear-wheel bearing setup is vitally important in a truck's true, capable, GVWR.

People (especially truck owners) always fear change. It’s why some people still complain that they put sunroofs and seatbelts in trucks: because that’s not how trucks are supposed to be built. LoL

Give it another 8-10 years and people will making the same argument about the 4th Gen vs 3rd Gen. LoL

Thats good info. What I find interesting is the axle weight ratings for my '17 4Runner , the new Tundra and my '18 Tundra.
My Tundra's rear axle on the sticker has a 1880 kg weight rating.
    My 4Runner 1560 kg.
A new Tundra rear axle 1750kg on one I saw. So it was a 130 kg difference. That's almost 300 lbs.

Outside of the larger rear axle and read diff on the 2.5 Gen - (visually larger) my assumption is that some of the difference has to do with the Open C rear frame design on the 2.5 and its ability to flex and keep tires on the ground long after the New Tundra back tire is up in the air. The tires on the ground help carry the load allowing for a higher rating. If you are carrying a lot of weight in the bed, a trailer and on a trail that is uneven - that is a lot more stress on the frame welds of a boxed truck like the New Tundra.
    Are my assumptions correct ?

    ****************

As long as change is for the better.
Comparing Crewmax short bed trucks for truck people as you say.
The New Tundra tows more +1, carries less weight in bed -1 , less cubic ft in Cab -1 , less cubic ft in Bed -1, turning radius much larger on new tundra -1.
I don't know any "truck people" that down size. they always go up in truck utility.
No flames please... I am talking about those people that only need their truck for purpose and utility.
Look my '17 4Runner does most things in an easier way than my Tundra. It even has a bigger rear window roll down and full time 4wd. But it can't do at all about 30% of what I use my Tundra for. If I was pushed to get rid of one - the 4Runner goes.

I plan to keep mu 2018 Crewmax Limited for a very long time. I expect it will be super dependable just like my 2007 was. I am only sitting at 50k miles on it now. It is worth about what I paid for it 3 years ago and I got the extended CPO warranty when I bought it so I am good until 2027. The best part - it almost paid in full. Time to ditch the chrome and do some minor mods. :)

Rarely do people use every last inch of cubic feet or ounce of bed weight. Let’s be honest, truck people tend to look at numbers. It’s why Ford, GM, and Dodge seemingly have the usual towing title numbers competition every year to see who can squeak out more.

You won’t be able to tell the difference for the standard average trip to Home Depot. There are always outliers. But they still are going to sell the truck and fall within the same place on the sales charts because the product is decent enough to stay somewhat competitive but they are never going to get a Ford, GM, or Dodge purist. If people are bummed about Toyota adding stuff, they should blame technology for making the extras easier to manufacturer and the other manufacturers for putting it in their trucks first.

This topic will be redressed when the Gen 4s come out in about 10-15 years and most of the 2/2.5s have been replaced in numbers. People are going to be mad bc the 2035 Tundra can tow 18,350 lbs but the new Gen 4s can only tow 18,300. LoL

Never thought I would be called an outlier for using a truck as a truck and occasionally exceeding the weight guidelines on the sticker 8^0

Re: two of your points above. Unless you use your truck just to commute as a daily drive and occasional trip to Home Depot, many go over the weight requirements without even thinking about it. The new top of the line Ram for example only has 1000 lbs of payload. If you fill the bed or tow something decent with passengers you are over.

on #2 - I am not bummed about what they added. I like tech as much as the next person if it makes my life easier and safer. I am bummed about what they took away. See the previous post. With that, I really do like what they did to the 2024 Tacoma from videos/new reports.

You are saying exactly what I am thinking, except that I did test drive the 2023 V6 twin turbo and I did put the hammer down several times. It is very fast off the go, faster than my 2017 5.7 crewmax, and in TOW/HAUL it is even faster. However, I am not racing my truck. The turbos sound awful, and I do not think I can ever get used to that racket. I do not trust the "more technology and more little moving things is better" mentality. I like my V8 5.7 very much precisely because it is tried, true, simple, trusty. It does exactly what I want it to do and no more, no less. I also did not like the 2023 Tundra huge fighter aircraft console and display in the 2023. Jiminy crickets is it busy and way way way too much overload for me. I joked to the salesman that I was expecting a heads-up display, too. This is a case where some vehicle designer said "If you like having nice things, then here is a whole boatload of even more of them, whether you need them or not." I do not understand what happened with Toyota here. I want a decently advanced vehicle that is totally rugged, dependable, practical and reasonably comfortable. I do not want an Audi-BMW-Mercedes with a pickup bed. Very frustrating situation. I have begun looking at another brand altogether, first time since I was 20.

I am considering a RAM, unfortunately. Talked with a friend who likes his 2019 2500 the way I like my 2017 Tundra 5.7 crewmax 4x4 TRD. I might try a 1500 crewmax with all of the tow and offroad capacities. It will be the first American pickup I have owned since 1976.

What's wrong with your 17? Unless you drive 170k miles a year, why do you need to be in a rush to replace it?

The new tundra is a great truck. But at the same time it is evident now that the Tacoma is out that Toyota felt that was the more important project because unlike the Tundra it holds a slot at the top of the sales chart in its class that they want to hold onto.

One man's rush is another man's reliability comfort zone. My opinion is people who get a new vehicle every year are in a rush. Me changing vehicles after 90,000 - 100,000 miles and 6-8 years is normal. It is just where my comfort zone is, based on my sense of reliability

My dad got about 15 years out of all his Japanese vehicles before having major issues, which would only be about 70k miles given my driving habits.

After researching for months looks like I'll be getting a 2021 within a week. I've only test driven a Gen 3 so far for short drive so don't have much or any time driving them but did seem really different from my 2019 F150 I recently sold. I went with the 2.5 because it was 12k less and got good trade in value so really no point in waiting as trade in would also go down. I also like the stock 20 inch wheels. Anyway, I think Toyota will likely get the Gen 3 dialed in on reliability. They only have one size engine, so can really hone in on that and get it right. I really don't dislike anything, its just a challenge to for truck owners. I also don't drive a lot of miles so can live with the slight difference and have a lot of options to either keep it a long time or trade in a 3-5 years. So opted for a reliable practical truck this time.

Sounds like a base SR model might be to your taste then. You could go for a ram classic, which have stripped down infotainment centres.

You're also then buying a ram, which have very poor maintenance stats.

Looks are subjective. Some, like me, don't like the billboard sized front grill. But that is just me.

That’s your opinion and just like everyone else, you’re entitled to it no matter how asinine it is. The 2nd vs. 3rd gen bickering is comical and old. I wasn’t a fan of the 2nd gen styling when they came out but they grew on me and I think the 2.5 looks better. After two years I still can’t stand the styling of the 3rd gen. That might change with time but I doubt it. Different strokes for different folks. Spend more time enjoying the truck you chose instead of worrying what others think. Do 2/3 gen owners think I’m poor or stupid for buying a used 06, sure. Do I give a flying fu@k, no. I enjoy my 17 year old truck more than any of you in newer ones.
