It’s a shame it’s not closer. I would be interested. I use to live in Denton, so I’d love to visit again after 30 years absence.

Starting a new business and trying to buy a home all at the same time does not lend to superfluous vehicle purchases.

I’ve never understood the ridgeline comment.

It's a throwback, a bit of an inside joke. PHM always said they look like a Ridgeline way back in the day, I always said they look like a Ford Explorer Sport-Trac. I think this thread is what started it, maybe the earliest mention of it. I can't recall who started it, but it was probably PHM.

Glad to see I’m not the only one who thinks the step side is ugly lol.

I’ve never met anyone who thought it looked good. Although at this point, I’d almost be willing to buy one if it was in good shape. I’m actually looking at Tacomas now. But imo they’re more expensive for what you get in comparison.

Plenty of dudes on here have bought one and swapped out the bed. It's actually not horribly difficult to find a bed, but you're paying upwards of $800-1,200 used depending where you find it. Some beds on here were being given away for free.

It's funny, they're either overpriced because they're "rare" or underpriced because they're undesirable.

I hadn't even thought about trying to score a 2WD that way. I think these trucks look pretty damn sweet with a 5/7 drop, with the chrome bumper styling it'd be sick!

yeah I was mostly speaking of the Tundra itself. I actually like a step side on a ‘54-56 Ford with a lower front rake and tires nuzzled nicely under all 4 fenders. But that’s another sexy animal. Another truck I’ll never be able to own lol

If you don’t mind how the 2nd gen looks nor need the back seat room of the real 4 door, get the 2010.
Makes more power, gets better mileage, turns tighter, has a few inches bigger bed, you can get buy a used top off Craigslist, rubber bits are six years newer…
I’ve got a 1st gen double cab. It’s a great truck, but if I were looking today, I would consider a 2nd gen double cab.

So on my way to and from NM, my 4.6 2nd gen averaged 13.6 mpg at 80 mph. I get roughly 12 in town. I imagine the 5.7 is around that.

I am curious how a 5.7L would do for mpg in a 1st gen AC.

You have a 5.7 in your 2000 Tundra? Is there a build thread for it?

I wish! I have the 5.7 in my 2019. It’s a beast in that truck. Hot rod territory in the 2000.

So I thought I’d post a different subject here, and figured I’d try here first instead of cluttering up he forum with more threads. I see very little on this.

I found a 2006 DC with 100k miles. Sounds great right? But there’s a leak at the rear end. It seems that, along with their frames, Toyota’s diff’s also have a problem with rust. The salesman doesn’t know where exactly it’s leaking (seal or through metal) but because of the notorious nature of rust on 1GT undersides, I’m assuming the worst.

If I can get a good price on this, I’m still open to purchasing. However, upon looking at new carriers, every orifice in my body shriveled up - $1,500-2,500 in part alone.

Anyone have familiarity with this issue, and advice on sourcing a part without auctioning off my firstborn?

edit: 100k miles makes this extremely hard to just walk away from.FWIW it’s a 4x4, so I believe a .410 ratio.

They leak from the thinner “cover” on the rear diff. They are not removable except by cutoff wheel or torch. Then you weld a replacement on. But rust there is just a sign of how bad the rust everywhere else is.

    fueleconomy.gov claims:
    2004 4x4 w/4.7 to be 13/16 combined 14
    2010 4x4 w/4.6 to be 13/19 combined 16
    That’s ~15% better.

I have never owned nor even driven either truck. I’ve got an 2006 double cab and I have driven ~2015 w/ 5.7 for work. My truck gets 16.5 according to Fuelly. The 2015 got ~15, but also I drove it like an asshole.

You can probably find a used housing and just swap the axle housing. No point in trying to pay the big bucks for an otherwise semi-cheap/simple repair.

As a couple others have said, if the axle housing has in fact rusted through then you may have other rust issues that may be more substantial on the frame. I would stay away or at least look the frame over very carefully.

At least to me, driving both the power difference was noticeable even with the extra weight. The 4.6 has more power than the 4.7 and better gearing.

Yeah, my work truck is definitely a little quicker than my truck. Lack of 4wd and mine having 33s and 325k miles probably aids that but still, faster is faster.

Someone pointed out in the "for sale" thread on the other forum that it's got some obvious rust issues.

If your budget is crazy, this guy in Austin has had this one for sale for a long time (like at least 6 months)--
    2005 Toyota Tundra Limited 4X4 With with 95K Miles - $19,999.

Dang, and that thing is fully loaded. And the seller clearly knew to show 4WD is fully working. Too bad it's got the inferior cab, but someone into that might go for it.

If up for 6 months, my guess is they're not budging on price, I bet a cash offer of $17.5k would maybe change that opinion, but 6 months ... surely someone has offered by now. Maybe multiple.
