There's a difference between reviewing something and living with it. If you are only reviewing it and then handing it back, the big-3 win. If you have to sit waiting for a tow truck, is that 12" screen worth it? Is the toys and gadgets going to help when the engine has died and they have no power? How useful are they from the dealership waiting room?

Fords review well, Toyotas OWN well.

I do like Fords many Cab and bed aswell as multiple engine offerings for their trucks. Particularly their regular cab and V8 options . Hope Tundra can keep the V8 too.

Figured this is a good place for my first post: In '91 I bought an '89 Toyota 4x4. Had 175,000 miles on it and the original clutch when I sold it (still regret that sale). No issues with it. Second truck was a 2000 Tundra. No major issues for 150+miles. Needed a 4-door and when I drove an F150 with all the bells and whistles I loved the way it drove and handled. Its was a v8, 5.0 FX2 package. Comfortable and nice to drive? Yes! Reliable? No! First, the rear camera broke. Then the latch for folding the rear seats. The leather front seat tore. The sunroof wouldn't close which was close to 2k to fix, so I just sealed it shut. Around 80k miles things went really south. AC stopped working--3 times, and 2 different mechanics couldn't get it to work correctly. Problems with the battery and starter, Transmission would get stuck in first gear at altitude and I would have to pull over and restart (great when you are on a mountain road where there is nowhere to pull over and you are going 10mph). When I decided to sell it and read all the online 'expert' reviews the Tundra was said to have an outdated engine, be years behind Ford and Ram, and lacking technology. But when I looked at the actual owner reviews it was a very different story. Now I have a 2016 Tundra 4x4 TRD limited. It drives like a truck and doesn't get the mileage of fancier engines, but I'm no longer visiting my mechanic every month and I trust it on long trips. Good to be back.

Ford might make a good truck. Might. But they are the ugliest ones in the market imo. Never cared for the grilles and headlights on the the f-150. Taillights aren’t much better

It's funny both popped up on my Google feed too, but I only opened the second one to get the link to post up here.... I did quickly read through it to make sure it wasn't the original post article, and didn't have anything bad to say.

I have to agree with everyone on here, the Tundra is an "Owners" truck. If you are leasing, then the "Big 3" might make sense.

When you get stranded in the middle lane of a 6 lane highway after your company Ford blew it's transmission you tend to look for more reliability. That day I was so happy to get back to the office and jump in my Tacoma and drive away without a worry in the world.

To help quiet down the interior, look up a product called "Kilmat", cheaper version of dynomat. I spent about four hours doing the matting over a weekend ( redid the stereo) and wow did it quiet things down. I am a old Artillery guy, so you know my hearing is SHOT

Regarding your transmission comment, I'm curious if the pre-2019 GMs had the 6L80 transmission and if that transmission had issues? The Fords I had transmission troubles with I believe both had the 6R80, which from my understanding is the Ford version of the same ZF-designed transmission as GM was using. My Fords started having issues at around 60,000 miles and then seemed to need to go back to the shop every 2-3 months after that. I don't know if I trust Consumer Reports or not, but I think last I checked, they list all 1/2 tons except for the Tundra at 1 out of 5 regarding reliability with the Tundra having the highest rating at 3 out of 5.

Yes, I believe it's the 6L80 transmission. I thought it was actually pretty good from what I'd heard previously, especially compared to the 8 speed GM has been using since about 2016, but I've seen a lot of complaints about it on the GM Trucks forum. That also could be partially that it's just not as smooth and intuitive as the new 10 speed too.

It has been stated in this thread before, but these reviewers are only with the trucks for a day or so, up to a week, max. I had my last truck (Nissan Titan) for 14 years. All those bells and whistles that Ford and GM have, including the high MPGs due to gimmicks such as the engine turning off at red lights, WILL FAIL well before 10 years, and they will not be cheap to fix. I LOVE the fact that Toyota sticks with what's proven and is slow to add new features. They don't want to hurt their record of reliability, which means much more than all the bells and whistles. I wish I could find it now, but I saw an article comparing actual cost of ownership for several trucks with EXPECTED repairs, not just scheduled maintenance. Toyota had the lowest total cost of ownership even thought it has the worst gas mileage ratings.

Even in the long term reviews like Car and Driver does for a year and 20K miles they are still all hung up on the fact that it is shiny.

I didn't buy a Tundra because of what other people did or didn't think about them. Quite frankly, I don't give a shit.

I think in some of those cost of ownership calculations, they take resale into account, which is only useful if you plan to sell your truck after, say, 5 years.

I was walking the dog last week and stopped to talk with a neighbor. He has a Chevy and a RAM. In my rural neighborhood there's pretty much all domestic trucks. So after a while talking my neighbor asks "So, pause, how to you like that Tundra". It got quiet and he paused waiting for my response. So I don't bring up trucks knowing I have the Tundra and they all have Fords, Rams, and Chevy's. I figured this was going to get ugly but dove in anyway and said I was happy with the previous Tundra after 10 nearly trouble free years (with the exception of the E-brake sticking and causing vibration, fixed with lubrication). Im happy with my current 2020 that I've had since January.

So I thought here it comes. It was like time standing still waiting for the snide comments. So he starts out that he's getting sick of all the problems with his RAM and it never ends. His son's ~2010 Chevy has been pretty much completely rebuilt and still has problems reoccurring. Then he started up and said so and so's ford blew the motor twice under warranty, and so and so's one was getting sick of transmission failures, on and on about all the trucks in the neighborhood. Lots of major fails. He just went on and on some newer trucks under warranty, some older that just keep falling apart since new eating them alive cost wise. I honestly couldn't believe all the horror stories.

He said he's seriously thinking of a Tundra since he had a Toyota pickup back in the late 80s and it would not die. So here I thought I was going to be ambushed and I was really shocked to find out about all of the major failures on pretty much every domestic truck near my home ~10. I said even Tundra's can have problems but pretty rare from my own personal experience. My neighbor summed it up with what he was thinking "you need to buy 10 domestics to get maybe 2 good ones, and you might have problems with maybe 1 of 10 Toyota trucks". So that really blew me away. It was good to hear his honest thoughts and not getting stuck on a brand. I had no idea of all the trouble with these neighborhood trucks. They were just trucks parked in their driveway (or evidentially at the dealer getting fixed).

If reliability is important as I'm sure it is with most of us, feel good about your Tundra. There's a lot of scary failures out there in some brands and especially the domestics in my neighborhood.

I think all the trucks are pretty good. I have always had good luck with Toyotas so I usually shop there first. An think the Tundra is a little overbuilt for a half ton, more so than the others. Also feel a lot of these "reliability" issues with the big 3 has a lot to do with the fact they are producing 2 to 4 times as many trucks as Toyota does. You are gonna have more issues when you are pumping out almost 1 million F150's in a year like Ford does.

I actually bought a Tundra because of what other people think and said about them. User reviews did help here a bit to be honest. Prior to that I purchased a Chevy Tahoe and that was the car I did not care what people said about. Boy was I wrong. :)

I live in the same kind of neighborhood but don’t let it bother me. I drive a Tundra for a reason, the other folks made their pick too. I’m happy with my choice as they are with theirs. I catch flack every now and then, but again, to each their own and I don’t let it bother me. It’s my truck. I’m the one who has to be happy with it, and I am.

    Good lord. Uhhh, no.

I have owned some form of every single truck available for purchase 2 Tahoe’s a suburban and an expedition EL. Owned applies loosely. I was provided by enterprise a brand new truck every year for 15 years. All but a Tundra. I will say the Ford F-150 with the eco boost was my favorite. The expedition EL towed my boat the best and I kept that til they demanded it back.

My buddy was always talking up the Tundra and I just didn’t need to buy a truck so I never did. I just got my first Tundra last year and kicks the crap out of all the other trucks I have had. It’s a great truck and I will never look back. The interior suffers some, but all that is customizable.

I have two words for any that doubt the mighty Toyota Tundra.

    RESALE VALUE

The towing specs and payload on the Fords sound great until you actually buy the truck and try to live with those numbers. My neighbor retired a couple of years ago and bought a travel trailer and a new F150. My neighbor is no idiot and knows trucks and trailers. However, he took one trip in his rig and came back and parked it and told me that F150 scared him. It wasn't engine power, it was just simply a 1/2 ton truck is too light to be safe on the road with the weights they advertise. He never hooked that truck back to that trailer. He's now got a Dodge 3/4 ton with the Cummins and couldn't be happier. I personally don't like 1/2 ton for anything over 10k, I've seen too many c-clip axles release an axle over the years to trust them. Fortunately a Tundra doesn't have c-clip axles. People that have lost an axle due to overambitious expectations admit they had to cough to get loose from the seat when they finally got stopped. I admit I'm old and probably think old but I believe Toyota is more reasonable in their estimations for a 1/2 ton truck then Ford is.

Another bad thing with how light they are is going down dirt roads. At a recent job I was driving an F150 for 73 km down a dirt road and it was like a jitterbug. Just bouncing everywhere - it did it so much the trailer sway warning would come on most trips and cut power, and I never had a trailer connected. The more you use an F150 as a truck the more you realize they got heavy for a reason - the F150 is a mall crawler now, if you want a truck you have to go Super Duty with Ford.
