Its more serious than it's made out to be. We were 2 or 3 weeks late on lockdown and in another 4-6 weeks we will see the results of that. It's about the healthcare system being overwhelmed and unprepared. There is not enough equipment to care for people today, in a month it'll be ugly. The strain on the system isn't even about patient volumes in hospitals, if fully staffed we can figure it out and get shit done. But when we lose 20-40% of nurses and drs and other staff who get quarantined for 2 weeks when they catch it....its gonna be really bad. It's all about protecting the healthcare people so they can keep working and saving lives, and I'm talking simply the everydaybstuff that a hospital deals with. With fewer nurses hospitals would be screwed, add in extra volume of patients due to the virus that's a recipe for disaster. Increase patient visits by 25% and decrease nursing staff by 25% and well, that's bad news for everyone and our loved ones.

My wife is an ER RN here in south Louisiana. Its real. They are getting people with pneumonia like symptoms all day long. Her hospital is at capacity already with a good bit of confirmed cases.

Today I learned everyone is essential. Even mechanics. Sounds like they need to tighten their definition.

    Machinist.
Should be finding out tomorrow who is essential and who isn’t.
Luckily I’m sure I’ll still be working.

IMO if you are involved in providing shelter, safety, utility, or food you are essential. Otherwise no....this quarantine isn’t going to work.

Just checked a local news website and just like I thought we are still operating as normal with possible service reductions later this week. Tomorrow is my Monday and putting in 60 this week. Wife is also essential as she works in the medical field.

All of you first responders stay safe and hopefully you get the supplies you need.

Engineering contractor for some DOD programs. In a meeting today there was talk about keeping machine shops operating to support our program schedule which I thought was interesting. I work from home 80% of the time normally, so not much has changed though.

It is most definitely REAL and not overblown. This is a problem on a whole different level, just like mentioned by the others in the field. Everything mentioned above is TRUE. I just want to reiterate...The biggest problem is not people getting sick, that happens all the time. The problem is a combination of this being a new virus, no vaccine, no real treatment options for it, and then to top it all off it spreads so damn easy and quickly. THEN, just like mentioned above, throw in a shortage of supplies to protect those caring for the infected, lack of preparedness, lack of staff, and people not giving a crap about the self-distancing and isolation rules...pandemic ensues.

At what point are we hurting ourselves more than helping by having so many people go without being paid.

    Forgot to add....my wife's a nurse.

Seems to be quite a few nurses or spouses who are nurses here.

Essential chemical worker here. Supply to government, military, medical fields. I do believe the media’s making this worse. But you and I know America can’t shut down. We put all on the line. Am I worried maybe a little but I’m more worried when I leave for work for my wife’s and kids safety. This last thing I want to do is shoot/kill someone at this crisis going on in the world. My fear is people think stupidity if they can’t get what they want. It’s like crack. Believe me I lost my best friend to that addiction. It was a very sad day when I got the news. But when it comes to reality everyone do what ever it takes to survive. I wish people would work together and make the right choices. But that’s never the cast. Good luck to all my Tundy buddies out the. God has plans for everyone I’m a fighter want will fight for them family I love. I would help anyone that’s in need. As long as I can and I would risk death for no reason. Prays to all that are infected. It will get worse before it gets better. We all should help each other. This is why America one of the strongest countries out there.

I work for a communication company and wife at the hospital. They told us last week to take or work trucks home and be ready for o.t. They told my wife today she’s going to have to work o.t. It’s good we get to keep working but we also risk catching this shit every day we go to work, or may already have it and don’t know and we are putting others at risk.

I don’t think that’s what he meant. Nobody has a plan of how to boost the economy or what the economy is going to even look like after this is over. The govt can’t even agree on a stimulus package to help out the people who are struggling right now. Remember 2008? I’m pretty sure with the way things are going, it’s going to be worse than that.

I work for an aerospace company and we have DOD contracts so we are essential. Our company has contacted the White House, governor, etc to offer help in manufacturing PPE for other more essential workers.

Let's not get this thread closed with political stuff.
And let's also do all we can to get through this and not lose millions of American lives in the next month or 2. Then we can talk boosting the economy.
How can we have a plan to know what anything will look like? Will we lose people like Italy? We don't know. Come May we can have a better idea.
Honestly I have devoted my life to helping others, i was an EMT at 16, RN at 21 and have been working in the ER since then, I'm 38 now and I would work and have worked for free if I had to, to help others. Money is nothing, lives are everything even if I don't know you.
This pandemic is just starting here, its gonna get worse, especially if people don't isolate. If that's means people can't work then so be it. If I weren't an essential employee, I would be staying home, because knowing that if I don't someone in my family or a friend could die because of my actions.

Politics aside. This is a multi level problem and I just worry about the big picture. This is really gonna disturb our way of life for a long time.
