I saw a "smaller" one in a Walmart parking lot last June, I guess he was sleeping in it as a lot of RVs and truckers do that plus it was 7:00 in the morning. I'm in Arkansas and it had Rhode Island plates.

    Umm...
If you can afford to buy one of those in cash then you can afford a pretty nice house with no mortgage too.

They definitely have a cool factor but overall they are a little ridiculous IMO especially considering the price. Even if was rich, I couldn't see the reason for buying one unless I was planning on taking a 3 month expedition to the North Pole or something of that nature.

I know tiny houses are all the rage with the Millennium crowd and maybe I'm just old but no way would I want to live full time in anything that size. To each their own but I'll take a real house with a real kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, closets any day

please do not put me in the millennial category... and my day job just barely lets me make the mortgage as it is.

earth roamers are totally over the top. if i sold my house along with almost everything else, which we're planning on doing anyway, i could afford to buy one outright. would i actually do it? no. it's nothing more than eye candy.

when the kids were little, my wife and i had seriously considered chucking everything and living on a boat full time. living out of a truck on the road wouldn't be difficult for us. i need, no, want, less stress. less overhead. more freedom.

i have one daughter with limited time left in high school, another who has already left home and is living moscow and an adventurous 10 year old. if i'm going to cut & run and get back doing what i want to, and what i'm good at, now is the time.

If you look at the first pic that is head on I believe it's a ran over styrofoam cup, second pic the light hits it and appears to be shinny like liquid. Both pictures were taken seconds apart.

You sure? You seem to be a little touchy and whinny like a millennial

    Just kidding...

So you barely make enough to pay your mortgage but yet have enough equity and other assets to liquidate to come up with $400-500K?

That was kind of my point so I don't know what we are arguing about?

Look, I get the whole desire to simplify and be less stressed about money, bills and other material things but living out of a truck or boat is just a little over the top IMO. There are less radical, more practical ways of achieving the same kind of stress free living without living like a gypsy, especially if you can liquidate $400 to $500k in cash.

Maybe CO is an expensive place to live but around here with $400k in cash, you could buy a pretty nice chunk of land (20+ acres), have a modest house (+/- 1500sq ft) built on it and pay off your current cars or buy 2 brand new reasonable priced cars and still have money left over. With no house or car payments, you could work just about anywhere and make enough money to pay for the rest of your living expenses.

And a house on property is going to increase in value compared to a truck or boat that's going to quickly depreciate and eventually leave you stranded some place. Just something else to consider before jumping off the hamster wheel?

not sure. were we arguing? i have enough stress and anger management issues so i try really hard not to bring it here. sometimes it happens though.

    so, agree to disagree?

after 20 years in a job being chained to a desk and a laptop and living on airplanes, i'm tired. there's more to life than waking up miserable and going through the motions. of being stuck and being told that you can't do the thing you want to. of a society that puts way too much emphasis on how much money you make, who you know, what you drive, the size of your house or where you live rather than being in nature and pursuing something creative.

as far as we know, you only get one shot at your life. why not make it the best you possibly can? experience everything you can?

I don't know that we are really?

I can fully relate and pretty much agree with all of it.

I think the only thing we disagree on is how best to make life more about living and less about work and money? I know me and living on the road like a gypsy would be just as stressful as my day job. I've traveled enough in my life to know making life one long adventure isn't for me. I'm not worried about experiencing everything life has to offer. I'm more about having more time for the things in life that I love. I'd be much happier living in my own home on my own little private wooded chunk of earth where I could do the things I love doing without the stresses of the rat race.

But that's me. You have to do what will make you and yours happy and I hope you do and I hope its everything you want it to be.

    Good luck brother!

Given what emissions have changed on diesels, it wouldn’t surprise me if running non-American diesel would fuck something up after awhile. Add in that you’d need to haul DEF with you if you took it out of the country, just sounds like a pain.

the apache and the expedition from off grid trailers are the two on my short list. i think they're both solid. once you start adding options, price is pretty similar. overland journal just did a pretty extensive review in the last issue and the expedition came out as their top choice. there were a few issues but it looks like the folks at off grid have addressed them.
