Do you like the look of the 22 Tundra

I remember the first time I saw the new design of the 22 Tundra. It was the red TFL youtube truck. I was SHOCKED and said "WOW - that is UGLY". Here I am a year later waiting on a 22 Platinum in Supersonic Red... haha. So I guess the more I looked at the more I liked it. What really sold me though was the interior/tech and Toyota reliability. Out of all the trucks I researched, (and huge disclaimer, this is my first truck, so no firsthand experience) I liked the interior of the Toyota the best. Nice layout, great tech, and good features available. I hear that they are expensive. However, I don't think they are too out of line with the rest of the market. Costs of everything has gone up and seems very comparable to other brands. I will admit it doesn't have the MOST fancy features/tech/etc. However, I feel like that has always been a trade-off with Toyota. You don't get the latest and greatest, but the trade-off is that bullet proof reliability. Hopefully this truck will keep that reputation alive and not disappoint. I am excited for my 22 and the look has grown on me (for SOME trims). One of the biggest reasons I got the platinum was the whole mustache grill situation. I will say I hate the CHROME and that weird silver one on the 1794 and Limiteds (and Captsone for that matter).

Absolutely FUGLY!!! The front end is embarrassing and 100% a deal breaker. The 2am girl at the bar becomes OK cause its 2am and your shatfaced. The Tundra sits alone in the parking lot at 3am.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
Normally I would try to argue the point, but Toyota’s marketing of this truck is clearly targeted towards urbanites.

That doesn’t mean it’s a bad truck, or even that I won’t buy one (for the actual record I like the way it looks in person)…. but dammit Toyota can we get less commercials with latte sipping pretty boys living in McMansions, and more advertising and focus on the Tundra actually doing truck things?

Used to hate it, now I think the 2.5s look stupid with the rounded hood and mismatch flared out headlights (yeah, suck it haters). I had to spend a lot more than I thought to get a decent looking 2022 with leather seats. The tech so far has been 200% positive. Looks are a factor, but holy shit these features are nice. There is 0% chance that the 2020 V8 (test drove) is as fast as my truck, this thing just rips.

When I first saw the front end, I swore I would never buy one, but I think a large part of that is that I had an '18 Limited CM, so I was looking for any excuse to hate the truck because owned the generation that was being "replaced". Told myself that the TT V6 would never come close to the power and towing capability of the 5.7 platform. I was wrong on both points. The grill is not really any larger than many trucks I see on the road. The towing of the TT V6 is much better than the 5.7 (of course that is coupled to the 10 speed). My '22 is much quicker than my '18, although I am not looking to win any trophies or ribbons. In regards to looks, the interior is much better quality, as well as the tech.

I am one of the target market for this truck. My work truck is a Ford F250, and my personal truck (Tundra) is a comfortable SUV with a truck bed that I tow with only a few times a year.

Was the same for me (and many others here I think). Was the stupidest looking grill I've seen outside of the modern lexus grills. But I saw one in Texas irl without all the chrome and that was the beginning of something in my mind coming around.

I love it now, but I understand it's not for everyone. I think the sequoia front end is 100x better and I very much look forward to aftermarket options to swap them out.

Buy a 3rd gen if you want the latest and greatest.
Buy a 2nd gen if you want a track record of proven reliability.
Stop needing to see "flaws" in other people's decisions in order to feel better about the decision you made.

For crying out loud, some of us are reading this thread losing faith in humanity because we're having an argument over what a freaking truck looks like. :bananadead::rofl:

I try and stay positive with this, the way I look at it, the fact that we're arguing over some chrome and the sound of the engine means that the options on the market are better than they've ever been before. You really can't make a bad decision.

Honest question from a 5 time Taco owner and current Tundra owner expressing an opinion that apparently a fair number of people share. So very sorry it did not measure up to your standards but then again…don’t really give two shits.

When the '22 was unveiled, I thought what were the designers thinking; that thing literally drove into the ugly tree and all the branches fell on top of it. Well fast forward to now and having actually seen them in person, I have to say my original thinking is still valid. WTF! It's like they took a Silverado (and whatever the GMC version is), Volkswagen Atlas, and, F150 and smashed them all together to create the abomination.

It’s the front that gets me the most, looks like they used Jay Leno’s face as inspiration…all chin. Now the interior is another story, love it but damn that front end is fugly.

Did any of you grill haters consider that the large grill is required for the hybrid and conventional radiators? It's easy to armchair car design when you don't have to worry about any mechanical details.

Well if looks are the number one consideration for you when buying a vehicle, and you don’t like the way the 3rd Gen Tundra looks…. I guess the easy answer for you is don’t buy one.

Honestly just wondered if it was only me that thought the front end was ugly. Still a huge Tundra fan but think they’ve just gone overboard a bit on styling, just looks cartoonish to me.

New Sequoia has the exact same power plant and looks a million times better. This isn't the first vehicle in the world with an engine like this, there are sedans that stuck in more air than this truck so that's not a fair reason.

    1. Everyone here is a Tundra fan and rightfully so.
    2. Some people will get angrier if you call their truck front end ugly than if you call their wives front end ugly.
    3. Haven’t counted but enough people weighed in with similar comments so I know now it’s not just me.

While still a large grille, much better looking with color matched surround and aftermarket bumper.

I don’t think the emphasis on grille size is a function of engine air intake for combustion purposes.

It’s all about cooling, and more airflow over all those heat exchangers is a good thing when you are working an engine hard. The sedans you mention won’t be putting the engine under the same load and thermal demands on the cooling system as a truck, at least not at the same speeds. A sport sedan boogying down the road at high speed will indeed create a ton of heat that needs to be exchanged, but at 100+ MPH it doesn’t require a lot of square footage to move that air volume over the radiators.

That same engine in a truck yanking an 8500lb trailer up a long grade on a 95*F day at 60 MPH or less needs more area and larger radiators to achieve the same thermal management.

Also note that the Sequoia tows less than the Tundra. Cooling capacity might be part of the reduced capabilities.

I don't think the F150 has a humongous grill but I could be mistaken. Does it run hotter?

It's growing on me. It's looks much better with a lift and bigger tires that's for sure.

But every time I see one...

And every time I think it's a Sierra, it ends up being a '22 Tundra.

Well prior to the Tundra I considered the GMC to be the best looking full size truck on the market. So there is that.

I did, and I stand by that statement. That doesn’t mean the cosmetics of a truck aren’t noticeable though.

While I might observe and have a subjective opinion on looks, it’s still a tool and for me the best functioning tool I can afford will win. This is how I ended up with a Gen 2 Tundra, a truck I considered to be ugly inside and out when I bought it over 15 years ago. At that time easily the worst looking 1/2 ton money could buy, only exceeded in grotesqueness by the 2.5 Gen where Toyota attempted to put lipstick and mascara on the ugly ass Tundra.

Ugly they are, but the 2nd and 2.5 Gen were and remain functionally excellent and well built tools. Some guys like how they look, so they get a nice tool they like looking at and happy meal for them.

I still maintain that if looks is the number 1 criteria for liking a truck, then chances are an individual with that priority is probably not making consistently good decisions.
