Creating back lit TOYOTA letters for Pro Grill printed in clear ABS

I LOVE seeing this stuff. Mad respect to the Creative ones out there doing their own thing!

 

Working on the O. the hardest letter to do. What a pain in the ass. Got the letter done. just need to add the cavities on the back for LEDs, Screws, and wires. I'm calling it a night though will finish another day.

 

OP...I second, the second question.

 

Dont really want to think about this til I finish the project.

Well finally got the settings right and got a really clean print. Paint is next. Still have to finish modeling the other letters and get them printed. Really happy with the results.

 

A high quality silicone fill would allow for LED replacement. But I suppose replacing a whole letter wouldnt be a big deal either. Very cool project. Plan on selling them?

This is what the back looks like with the LEDs installed.

 

Paints ordered. Clear Plastic adhesion promoter, MGM, and UV clear. All should get in on Sunday. Will take a while to get the paint done as drying is slow this time of year.

 

O model is done. Will print an O and the second T tonight. Still need to model the Y and A. Getting there.

 

And mine is also MGM.

Are the letters on the new 2019 Pro grill the same size?

Soooooo after finishing all the models. printing a second T and half of an O. I was thinking about how to go about the painting since it's too cold to paint here. So, decided to make some changes and here is the new NO paint version. It has holes for the original letters to line up in then has pegs that will fit in the grill original holes. I will have to spend some time making the models a bit more precise, but should be a better overall solution. also made the amount showing from the sides a bit smaller. about 2mm.

 

Here is the factory O placed on the half printed O to give you an idea of how it will look. Lots of alignment issues with the O but its close.

 

Soooo close. Only 1mm off. Adjustments made and hopefully in the morning. I will have two just right Ts. I'll add some leds and get some night shots of the T lit up on the truck.

 

These are absolutely amazing! any chance you would mind sharing the 3d printing files? would be interested in printing them my self! Well Done Sir!

Are the letters the same size for the 2019 Pro Grills?

 

I have no idea. need someone to measure theirs with a caliper.

Finished up the first T and took a couple test pictures. It looks awesome!! Ordered some 3x3 3M mounting tape squares and a 5cm leather punch to make the holes to attach them perminantly. Still have to redo the Y and A models and print all the rest. Used a 2 terminal 20mA linear regulator to control LED current.

Now for the glamour shots.
