Thankfully I never had to replace the HPFP. But there were a lot, enough that NHTSA initiated a safety study, of high pressure fuel pump failures. Your 2012 would have fallen in the batch for sure. It’s an expensive fix if the pump fails and sends contaminants downstream. Many thousands of dollars ($7,000-$12,000 depending on the damage) if it sends metal throughout the fuel system. You can replace the pump for about $800 IIRC and some companies were selling kits to do just that. There are a ton of threads over at tdiclub about this issue. I really hope it is something else... or you have a warranty through a dealer to do the work and stand behind it. Ugh.

Interesting part is the sound is coming from under the engine on the drivers side. It a whining sound like an electric motor. It's not coming from rear left, where I assume the fuel pump is located.

Are you sure it's not just the turbo spooling/cooling. This is common and normal, but can sound weird if you're not used to hearing it. ie if you're used to only naturally aspirated engines.

I don't remember hearing that sound before. I don't think it's the turbo spooling. Has me stumped.

The turbo is only going to spool up with engine rpms. Is it making the sound at idle?

If you’re mechanically inclined, pull the fuel filter and take a look. If there’s any metal in there, you can be pretty certain the HPFP is the culprit. I’d say start a thread on tdiclub and let the experts over there give you some advice. I know a little about these things - the tdi devotees ought to be able to give you real advice.

Yes I can hear this high frequency sound at idle. I did start a thread but no response yet.

Yup, imagine that! I work in a very industrial area where the roads get beat up from heavy truck abuse, so most cars can be on the rough side

From all that I read this high pitch frequency EEEEEEeeeeeeeee.... sound is normal, I have never noticed it before. Has something to do with ECU adjusting something in the motor. I will worry less and drive more.

Yes, it will spool to cool down once engine is shut off for a short period of time and you can easily hear it if you're listening for it (and you can hear the computer "click" adjustment sound as well after shut off).

I drive a '07 gti also, with about 185k on odom, which right now has a front left caliper sticking.... It smelled great after driving home yesterday. There's my excuse to drive the truck to work!

As far as that A3 goes, I would think regular maintenance should take care of you until into the mid 100k's easy, before you should start sweating hard.
