What do you guys use for a commuter car? Thinking of getting something fairly cheap but reliable. I travel over Teton pass every day so need AWD or front wheel drive with killer snow tires. You guys have any suggestions? I was thinking Subaru or Volkswagen Jetta.

    Function before sparkle.
Over the years I have had the following commute to the office cars in Canadian winters with 45 min - 60 minute commute each way:

    Audi A4
    Subaru Impreza Outback Sport
    Kia Forte SX
    Nissan Altima

Edit: had a Passat Wagon in the early 2000’s. Unreliable, overactive traction control and almost as bad as the Nissan in snow.

    All had dedicated winter tires.

I can honestly say that the best overall commuter was the Kia Forte. Comfortable, quick, cheap for everything and was shockingly great in all kinds of storms with a set of Blizzak tires. It helped that the SX had the upgraded engine and a 6 speed manual.

The Subaru was great in the snow but the driving position was really low the maintenance costs were as high as the Audi. My heart loved it, but it wasn’t right overall.

    Hope that helps.

We have a 2015 Jetta TDI 52mpg but don't have any snow and not sure how they do in those conditions. 140k trouble free miles so far.

We use The Woman's Corolla S as our fuel efficient option. In winter, we put on studded Nokian Hakkapellitas.

Sounds like Toyota Corella is the way to go. Install some blizzack tires and run with it.

I have a 2004 Matrix which is Corolla but with a hatchback, I like it a lot. They also come in AWD

1.8 liter with a timing chaining and a near bulletproof 4 speed auto.

I drive a Hyundai accent back and forth from work and home. Get 34 mpg and the little snow and ice Tennessee gets it does well. Not the most manly car out there but keeps the miles off the truck and saves gas.

What do you guys think of VW Jetta diesel? Or am I asking for it in repairs? Looking at some options, looking at subaru as well. My commute just went to 50 miles a day from 24.

Have a 2015 Jetta 2.0 TDI with 140k trouble free miles. 52mpg Had 165k on my 08 Jetta 2.5 Gas when I sold it - clutch went out about 150k and changed brakes once. I have had good luck with VW and would buy a TDi again if they sold them new.

I have the manual transmission so not sure if the auto has any issues or not. Love that I can drive from Vegas to Phoenix and back on a single tank of fuel. Plenty of power and torque, plus with the manual transmission its fun to drive- feels like driving a go cart compared to the Tundra.

I have to go up and over a 10k pass everyday. Don’t know how well a Civic will do. Pass is steep too.

15 Camry for the DD unless I don't have to travel much that day then I just take the Tundra. Try and keep it in the Toyota family. We got the Camry used at a local dealer. Had 102k miles on it and still drives like a new one.
