What is Toyota’s reason for all the chrome?
Did they do market research and most people like the chrome on their car and Toyota assumed people want it on a truck?
Do people in other countries love lots of chrome and they decided to make most of the trucks like this?
Do they do it for durability or is it cheaper?

honest questions on why they do this. I know some people love lots of chrome, I’m just not one of them.

I would like to know who is part of this Market Research?! It has never involved myself. Sure would like to take part some day!

Chrome might be a generational thing. I am mid 40's and have never liked it. My father [now late 80's], loved the chrome look.

Anyone with wrapping experience. How hard is it? It looks simple enough but do pros just make it look easy? I’m considering doing all door handles, bumper panels and tailgate latch myself. I would like to color match the mustache so I’m not sure about that.

Wrapping is not that hard if you have a little patience. A heat gun is your friend. Practice with smaller pieces to see just how far you can take it. I wrapped my topper, and depending on your brand of wrap, it'll conform quite a bit before the metallic looks off.

I do some wrapping, mainly focused on motorcycle pieces/Tupperware plastic. Motorcycles are usually harder to wrap as even the small covers will have compound curves.

3m is the most well known vinyl but definitely Not one of easier vinyls to install and less clarity on their gloss pieces.
Just my limited experience I stick to Vvivid now for most things as about easiest to install and they came out with a series of ultra gloss vinyls that 99.9% of people swear is paint. It has a thin out cover in conjunction with normal sticky side release film. I beleive the Ultra may have to be a direct from Vvivid purchase.
(Subscribe to Ckwraps ytube as he does a nice job of explaining different films and applications. Really helpful.

As I am getting a black platinum in 2 weeks going to wait and see how the front blk chrome ‘stauche looks against the body color. If I am not a fan may see how the Ultra gloss black vinyl looks or not look to match and try a satin black and a low gloss for entire front .(one shade up from matte).

Think a Hyperdip/plastidip would turn out alright on these wheels?

    upload_2022-2-10_10-51-57.jpg

Never attempted it before but thinking of giving it a shot…realizing of course that it might not hold up great OR’ing or in the winter.

I will dip my emblems when it is warm enough. I know a lot of people do wheels, but the look after a year varies greatly. Might need to redo it occasionally but it is cheap.

I've seen a lot of people do it on various wheels over the years ever since Plastidip really became popular ~10 years ago. I've seen bad (read as "really, really bad") plastidip applications and some really great looking applications. The one thing on wheels though, no matter how good of a job you do, it's always a losing battle. Wheels take too much punishment and it's darn near impossible to keep the finish in good condition. Plastidip is just too soft of a surface to stand up to the constant punishment of a wheel, in my opinion. Rocks, salt, dirt, sand...not to mention the occasional curb rash...just eats up a Plastidip finish too quickly. Plus, once the brake dust starts to build up on it, you can't just hit it with a high-pressure wand because it'll rip off the finish. Cleaning dipped wheels is a PITA.

Plastidip Emblems? Sure. Trim? No problem. Wheels? Nah.

My opinion. Maybe there's a way to harden the surface to make it stand up longer that I don't know about.

Just like anything its all in the prep work, the more time and energy put in the better. I have 2 friends with fully plastidipped rigs- 1 M3 and the other is a heavily overlanded tacoma and they both look amazing after a few years

My apologies. Nothing special but I like them so far(very early in the game obviously). 18x9 +12 Black Rhino Wanaka wheels. Tires are BFG KO2s 285/65R18IMG_20220121_130844__01__01.jpg

I would say they are approximately 1 inch outside wheel wells. My wife is not a fan of tires that stick out too far and she likes the stance with these wheels.IMG_20220211_093940__01.jpg

That's not bad at all. Pretty on par with what others seem to be posting.

@bigjuice These stick out the about the same amount that a set of 295/70's would on +18mm off set. According to tiresize.com.

285/65/18's with +12mm Off Set compared to stock:

Any updates on this? Would be cool if just a matter of heat gun debadge-style and no need to replace. I’m hoping for a midnight/blackout pkg in future models but there’s good value in a Limited if a relatively easy chrome delete is an option.

I love everything about my 1794 EXCEPT the chrome! There is so much of it!

I had a guy I know (he is very good with wrapping & tinting) quote me to OEM paint match the "mustache" grill surround and the mirrors, and wrap the door handles, window trim, 1794 badging, and lift gate handle.

His total is $1100 o_O $800 of which is the prep and paint the grill surround and mirrors.

I told him id have to think if it really bothers me that much, whats yalls take on this?

My opinion…wait and see if it really bothers you that much as you seem to already be leaning to.

Duri he ng that time you will either:
    1: Embrace the chrome
2: Decide it does bother you that much and wrap it
3: Unpainted mustaches will be available en masse for us to take to our favorite body shops to paint match/install.

I don’t remember but I think some of the other stuff is starting to hit dealerships (mirror caps, door handles, etc…May be basic black rather than color…check around)

Just my 2 cents…enjoy it either way

I pulled all my badges off the truck today. The “limited” badge on the passenger side rear door came off with so little effort, I’m surprised it didn’t fall off by itself. Much happier with the chrome badging off. Just the brushed moustache, chrome window surrounds, and door handles left.

I honestly don't understand all the hate for Chrome. Personally on my truck it adds a nice accent for all the black. Years back chrome was a symbol of luxury and now it isn't? What changed?

Chrome painted plastic looks cheap and crappy. It just isn't the same as chromed metal.

At least that's what I think it is. That and peoples tastes change over the years.

Hey @EC1 I see on the Bumpershellz site that there is a pre-order for the chrome window trim covers. Do you know a ballpark cost for these, or a potential release date? Thanks!

I'd imagine they'd be under $100... Ballpark though would in the area of $50 to $80? If we're painting them then it will be an additional fee on top of it.

No potential release date, unfortunately. R&D team is hard at work on them.
