You mean being treated like the bone heads treat people in the quick lube, Sean? Don’t be frustrated. You have a trade that you took seriously, learned and worked hard and now you’re a professional. Someone in your line of work should take pride and do the best they can. I’m a Substation Master Tech. Plenty of training and hard work and I also do the best I can every day. Way to many quick lube guys/gals have zero training, get paid very little and could care less about doing their job well. It’s why I try to do as much as I can myself.

Costco regularly has 6 qts of Mobil 1 0-20w on sale for $28. Four cases covers three oil changers. Toyota filters are available on Amazon for ~ $5 each if you buy five at a time. I love the Motiv drain tool, but the tool that comes with the filters works well if you use a drink bottle to push it into place.

That’s sort of a relief. Was thinking worst case scenario was they pull the whole engine. Not going to stress it to much. Could just be a minor flaw in the casting as others have stated. Will follow up on this and let you guys know what I find out. But knowing Toyota they will probably say it’s the “characteristic” of the truck.

    Too many…scratch that…not done yet.
Since they didn't change your filter the last two times (that you paid for), I'd have them spring for a new Oil filter housing...and put it in.

Right!? Well if it is a defect. I’m sure they will warranty it. Never had problems with management before there.

Hmmm, you are in Texas, I doubt that you are more than a three hour drive from a Costco. You probably drive three hours to go to lunch.

I went to Texas A&M and we would drive to Houston or Austin to get good food. That was a long time ago though.

Since Ive had my Tundra its been to Toyota every 5k miles. The only reason I did so was because the previous owner had his service records. every 5k miles w/Toyota.
I do however ask for the old filter to be bagged and the packing of the new filter left in the bed of my truck. Its a bit of piece of mind.
NOW, my dealer did toss my K&N air filter, the air box has the "STOP" sticker on it and all. When confronted, they just gave me a $100 service voucher.

    Just playing devils advocate here:
Without some kind of special identifier, you have no way of knowing for certain that filter was removed from your truck....or 1 they found in the garbage can behind the local spiffy lube.
That said, I don't believe for a minute a dealership would risk their reputation by pulling some shady sh1t like that.
Spiffy lube on the other hand.....

Since most, if not all, service centers and dealerships don't allow John Q. Public to stand there and watch them work on your vehicle, the only absotively posilutely way to know it was changed....do it yourself.

I wouldnt worry about bottom of oil filter cup. If u see metal shavings in filter itself then u can worry. If filter wasnt changed it wouldve been darker. They get black when u dont change them. Ur filter and housing look good. I always run a lil xtra oil too. Like a 1/4 qt or half qt. Most dealers will always do a good job on oil changes. Gets pricey but really is best place to take ur truck.

It’s very likely your filter was not changed.

There is only one way to ensure it's done correctly every time. Unfortunately, nobody gives a shit about your truck...including the dealer.

The average Joe is way too trusting. I don’t trust anybody.

For peace of mind, send an oil sample to Blackstone Labs for an analysis. They will send you free sample containers, and you send them oil with a $35 check. My first analysis at 2K miles showed a high amount of silicone in the oil. Must be the silicone that was supposed to seal my cam towers. LOL!! Seriously, it’s not a bad idea to get a baseline of what’s going on in terms of wear inside that motor.

Having worked in a dealership, I would be really surprised if they were not changing oil filters. I bet you have a similar looking material around your fill cap. I do. Never really bothered to spray out the inside of the filter cap myself. Mine may look the exact same.

Honestly I wouldn’t worry about it.

I did use Lucas gas treatment/injector cleaner. I wouldn’t think it’s from that though.
