I keep thinking it wouldn’t be too hard to make with a little wood and maybe some aluminum flat bar for the two side rails to hold it up. I have not seen any in this shape/configuration that weren’t sold with the safe.

I'm going to see if I can find one and modify if possible. I was thinking doing one from scratch would be a great application for 3D printing, but that would be beyond my pay grade. The folks at Lock'er Down were not aware of anybody making one either.

My fear with 3DP one (i thought the same thing) is that the axis of strength may not be good along the lips... but that does also depend on the print material too. The other challenge is finding a machine with adequate bed size for that tray unless you do it as two pieces.

Your safe is the Lock’er Down one, right? Do you have exact dimensions on the opening that the tray would fit into?

14 3/16" x 5 1/2". The Amazon safes have a metal frame that the tray rests on. Mine does not. So, anything riding on the top ledge would have to be thin material to avoid blocking the console lid. My other thought was to find one of the Amazon safe trays (sorry, I don't know what else to call these safes) and then fasten some braces for the tray to ride in. Probably just one in the front and one in the rear.

I just took a look at the pictures of the Locker Down half-safe. I think you’re gonna have trouble with any of these trays because there’s no rim around the open side of the console for you to rest the tray on.
    upload_2021-1-9_11-9-12.jpg

If it were me, I’d make a long rail out of some 1/4x3/4 or so aluminum flat bar and then drill/tap it into the side of the safe down maybe 1” from the top using the short #6-32 machine screws (or drill through and attach with lock nuts or chicago screws - lots of options). On the drivers side of the open space on the console wall, I’d run another rail and probably just pop rivet it in place, level with the one on the safe wall.

Then I’d use some 1/4 baltic birch plywood to make a tray with whatever dividers I wanted. Or go hardcore and do it with a piece of 5/4 hardwoord, a template, and a pattern bowl bit and router out the tray spots. Paint it all black if you want when you’re done.

hope that all makes sense. I’ve got a wood shop, and do a bit of making custom jigs with aluminum and baltic birch so that’s why i lean in the direction I’m describing.

Anyone find a solution to the half safe without perimeter frame?

I am looking for this same solution. I have picked up a few trays off of Amazon based on the measurements of the open area but none seem to be a good solution yet. It may end up being a completely custom job.

I don’t have that particular model (I’ve got the Amazon special that came with a tray), but based on what I’m seeing it looks like best bet is going to be attaching a rail to the side of the safe box and another to the side of the console and making a custom one out of wood, acrylic, or sheet metal.

Yup. My design concept has a couple of rails that will be printed up to create that ridge needed. We'll see how it turns out. I have spoken to the 3d printer a couple of times to plan it out.

Here is my layout with the modified OCD product. Don't mind the mags usually empty.

I think it was your pictures I saw somewhere of the OCD that got me started on the setup I did. I was worried about the OCD unit being a bit "wobbly" and wasn't entirely excited about the layout of the space when split by the OCD. I may revisit mine with another divider running front/rear in the big section, but for now it's much better than what I had.

There are a couple of dividers that are a bit loose, but those that look crooked are actually tight. I didn't feel like trying to sand them down some more for fear that it would end up loose. It fits my current needs and actually, I do not see me changing them out. I am hoping my tray design will fit perfectly once it is completed. Thanks.

I purchased one of the cheap Chinese safes off Amazon (bent corner and all). Does anyone have a way to keep the lid open? Once installed, the center console armrest pushes the lid forward just enough that the safe lid wants to fall closed. Thanks.

Just came across this thread and was wondering why you'd need to rack the slide, you don't keep one in the chamber? I'm always interested in why people don't keep a round chambered.

    No safety on edc.
    Child with autism.
Some training involves carrying without having one in the chamber.
    It’s actually fairly common.
    Personal choice.

I think in the end... it is just personal choice, because if its in a safe then that negates the issue with the child. I haven't had a pistol with a selectable safe in almost 15 years and I carry everyday (yes on my person). No, not that I'm better, but it's a training issue, but if it makes you feel comfortable then that's what matters.... at least you carry! If you've never played the 21 foot rule... what I'll call "game". You'll never draw your pistol, chamber and round and fire before being stabbed. While getting off the "X" is the most important part.... along with drawing your firearm....multitasking in a high stress environment opens the door for all sorts of issues..... but I'll get off my soap box... I'm always curious of the "why" when I come across this. I do have one more question... name one profession that carries a gun on duty/ while working and doesn't have a round chambered.

The safe is not locked when traveling.
That would negate the purpose of carrying while traveling.
That does not protect the child.
If I have to unlock the safe while in the vehicle, chambered or not doesn’t matter.
I’ve been carrying for over 30 years, have had countless classes, training and practice.
I’ve served in the military and was an MP.
I completely understand the 21’ rule and drawing.
Thanks for your feedback, but yes, it’s a personalized preference.

P.S. If you can’t draw and chamber a weapon within the time limit you’ve described, you’re not practicing enough.

I gotcha... yeah.... when I say carry....I mean on my person. I was infantry before becoming a Leo and going SWAT.... I'm quite clear on the "to carry loaded or not debate" and can guarantee that in my line of work, you won't find one person that doesn't carry hot. I'm not going to say it's not a time issue... we've done the drill several times and most of us have two rounds on target before the other can chamber a round, the issue is when there is legit stress added. And this is in a low stress environment where the only stress is beating your buddy. Add in real life and death and the issue is even more pronounced. While I do appreciate your service...I have to give you a hard time still.

Carrying with a round chambered, or not, or with the piece locked in a safe, or not, seems to be the issues that really get guys drawing lines in the sand. I read an article a couple years ago from an old-timer enthusiast. Really enjoyed his wisdom and down-to-earth common sense. On these questions he was Switzerland. It depends on the individual. It depends on the risk. It depends on the circumstances. It depends on the comfort level. It depends on the ramifications of a mistake.

These are not static questions unless you are at defcon 1 all day every day. Most people living normal lives aren’t in that scenario. Adjustments are necessary and a good thing.

So, for example, when I go to the big box store, or mall, or other mass collection of humanity, I view that as a high risk environment and adjust accordingly. Everything. What I carry, how I carry, my situational awareness, etc.

On the other hand, when I go to a company picnic, everything is more relaxed. I probably wouldn’t carry chambered in those circumstances (or carry at all) because I calculate the risk to be much lower than the catastrophic result of any mistake. Could I be caught off-guard? Sure. But I don’t want to live my life in a constant state of readiness for armageddon in every single situation.

So I think the lesson I took from the wise old-timer, was this: do what works for you. Be thoughtful. Be prepared. Be safe, and be well-trained with your equipment.
Your mileage may vary, but we’re all doing our best and what we think works for us under our individual circumstances.

I just bought one of these second hand with no instructions so I am trying to remove the rails from the console tray and I can’t figure what type of screw head they are. Does anyone have any idea? Torx, Phillips, etc. none seem to fit. Thanks. 95D41D91-A5E5-43FC-B7D1-0D31F4792B23.jpg

So just pop them out with a screwdriver or something? I’m not real confident in my ability to keep this install clean if that is the case. Haha.
