It wasn’t as bad as it looked. Some cleaning and some stitching took care of it. His fiancé is a nurse practitioner, and did it herself.

Don’t get me wrong, the location and how the skin was opened up...very lucky.

Hand feeding your pups especially GSD and Mals is the best training you can do. Not for just 3 months but every meal. Never give them free roam of a dog bowl and make them work for their food in training ways. It's bonding with them from the start and letting them know who is Alpha in the pack which should always be the owner/handler.

It is very very rare that a German Shepherd can get hurt by a prong collar as well yes they prongs do come in different lengths due to their fur but it must be on correctly as well meaning it must always be tight so when you pop it they get the idea.

E-Collars are the same. Best Method around. I'm not saying shock the hell out of your dog but use the vibration patterns to your advantage. Practice recalls with this and with a long line.
If you need to zap them make sure they're old enough when you do so. Once again the shocking sensation will not injure your dog like others would think. Hell one of my boys wears a double box and cranked up it doesn't phase him although he is a tough SOB.

My youngest pup who is 10 months now is just starting on her e-collar although she is so good I don't even need to vibrate it as she listens well....once again due to hand feeding.

Its a shame responsible dog owners have to put up with others stupidity.

Unless the dog is in PSA / French Ring then kicking does work that well as you would think. Although if they've had this kind of training the dog and the owners should know better.

When I was a bit younger, and raised Rottweilers I got to see first hand how powerful these dogs are. I was watching a home of a friend that had two female Rotts. His male was a GS.

I had my 10 month old male Rott with me, but segregated from the others.

Anyway, the youngest female Rott was relatively new to the home. The two females started fighting and it was clear to me...one of them were going to die. I went in with a 2x4 and wore myself out beating the living crap out of the bigger female that was killing the other. I couldn’t move my arms anymore, but just kept ripping into her flesh. I had my Sig 226 on me...but useless at this point due to arm fatigue. Finally she stopped, blood everywhere, I sat down and the damn dog came over, sat next to me and started licking my face. I didn’t even phase her.
I finally caught my breath, had a neighbor help me load the injured dog in my car and went to the emergency dog vet. 160 stitches later...that was a 95 lb Rottweiler.

Just dropping in to say this breed was literally bred to do this. Only at the time it was on a farm and visitors were few and far between. People should consider the purpose of a breed. There are a few really good dog owners (something that I aspire to be one day) and there are a few really bad dog owners. Most are mediocre dog owners. Dogs that are mostly good except that one crazy time.... breed characteristics matter.

From one California Steve to another, I almost E collared my ACD but the little shit knows the commands and is in his teenage rebellious phase. Wants to mark everything and plants when food is around. He's coming around though. He is truly a joy to own. Wish peoples perception of these tools were appropriate, but oh well.

That is a crazy price. I got my GSD 4.5 years ago for $850 and she's purebred on both sides.

We've had too many experiences similar to the stories here, where neighbors let their "offleash trained" dog to go run wild in the front yard and they come flying after us from across the street. My GSD has done well not getting hurt, and many owners have been informed of the .45acp dog toy their dog will receive if it happens again.

However, I have started walking her around 04:45am due to the lack of "traffic" in the neighborhoods at that time. It's saved a lot of heartache, grief, and potentially ammo which is nice due to the recent shortage.

It really depends on what you plan on doing with the dog in price determination. A good working line pup starts at about $2500 and up. Champion lines. Titles. I've seen fully trained K9s $25k-50K. Show line GSD are usually much less as well. Papers mean nothing as it is all about linage for people in the dog sport world. As for a family pet papered dogs are fine at the $950 range.

I paid $250 for my non papered ACD. Parents on site. Then again, He's no show dog or worker per se.

You handled it the right way. Years ago, before I knew better, I broke up a few dog fights with my hands. I was very lucky I didn't get bit. My mother in law tried to break up a dog fight once and got badly injured. She has scars on her arms from it. If my dogs get in a fight now I just start with loud yelling and it usually startles them enough to quit.

Our 45lb Husky has always been the dominant dog over our 70lbs mal/pit/mutt. She's a complete bitch to him quite often and he just takes it. Well, one day I guess he just had enough and went after her in our backyard. It honestly looked like he was trying to kill our Husky. I ended up rolling down the hill tangled up with all three of them. Once we stopped rolling I started punching him as hard as I could but I don't think he ever felt it. I had to pin him to the ground and hold him there while he still tried to get after her. It was intense. He eventually calmed down and did the same thing as that Rottie-tried to lick my face like "my bad". Afterwards he went up to her to check on her and they were cool with each other after a few minutes. That was the day I learned there are better ways to break up dog fights. I'll spray them with a fire extinguisher if I have to.

Pricing depends on a lot of things. The 1200.00 and under “purebred” are family pets and nothing more. Nothing wrong with these animals and I would most likely purchase one as well. I was gifted Kilo since he didn’t work out for the local PD and handler.
Now if you want to be a top champion breeder or show dogs...see below (for puppies):

Don't trust any dog, much less a Pit Bull or Rottweiler. Ive seen what those dogs can do. This coming from a former Doberman owner. Any aggression from a dog towards me or my current dog and id consider that grounds to be shot.

Not worth the medical bills and potentially losing your own pet or small child over something like that.

I’ve been attacked a few times by dogs. Only lost once...meaning they got away.

In 2009 a buddy and I were riding up west of Denver. He had came to a stop and of course I did as well. He had some mechanical issues. What we didn’t notice was a couple under a tree and a black lab mixed with something. The dog came over and got pretty aggressive with us. We asked the owners to control their dog. He pretty much told us to FO and quit being pussies. This dog bit my friend in the calf (I know, he didn’t have riding boots on...not my call..nor my feet/ankles). Then he came over to me circling my bike (I had no kickstand YZ450f) and gave me hell. He ended up getting my left hand a little, and lucky I had the carbon fiber knuckle protection.

During this whole time these two fuckwads were laughing. That didn’t end well.

Riding boots (especially with the steel tips) will do a number on a dog if kicked straight on with the front (not an instep kick). I have had dogs (in CO, WY and MT) come charging while we have been riding. Most times I can avoid the animal, a couple of times have not.

I would much rather be chased by a wild animal again (coyote) than someone's off leash dog. I know what the wild animal is looking for... not what the "tame" animal is after.

Two thoughts based on having owned many dogs over many years, all of them large breeds:

    1. I think rescuing dogs is a good and noble thing to do. However, someone turned that dog into the shelter. Sometimes life just intervened for that person and they could no longer care for the animal. Sometimes, it is because they bought a puppy farm dog with temperament issues that they couldn't handle. If you adopt that dog, those issues are now your problem. Training-wise and legally. Lots of people adopt shelter dogs not knowing what they are getting into. One reason people buy breeder dogs is that good breeders breed for temperament which can avoid this problem.

    2. I have had two dogs that were attacked by another dog. Those attacks changed my two dog's attitude toward other dogs to being more aggressive because they didn't trust other dogs as they did before. It took a lot of work to re-train each one to overcome having been attacked.

    Just food for thought ...

Honestly, the most scared I've been from an animal wasn't a dog, but a pissed off mama Goose that I stumbled upon as a kid. That day I learned how fast and aggressive Geese can be.

Absolutely, makes perfect sense. There are however lots of pups born or given to shelters at birth if someone didn't mind getting a non-specific breed.

Our rescue had known owners and they were contacted and never picked up her. We gave her a 2nd chance as her shi##y owners and lack of training weren't her fault.

My alpine stars were used for that on occasion. This instance we were stopped, in very rocky terrain. Movement was not easy.

Our jack russell was attacked by a Chesapeake bay retriever off leash - twice. Walking by the Same house, same irresponsible owner. The second time my wife and I got them separated; ended with our jack Russell latching onto the neck of the retriever and putting it on its back. After we separated them there were no wounds on the other dog (our Zoe literally put it down and held it there). But while thrashing around the retriever caught her on the belly and ripped open a laceration and two puncture wounds. She had a hard time breathing but otherwise seemed fine. We didn’t call the cops but immediately took her to the vet. A punctured lung and eight stitches later with a night in the ER and $1600 later we showed back to the owners house to collect on the bull. She said there was no way her dog did that damage, that we must be trying to scam her and that we needed to leave the property. We had to get the police involved, filed a report, they took the dog for a few days and registered it in the county. We threatened legal action and the owners paid the bill.

I heard that they had another incident not soon after and needed to euthanize the dog. All I could think about was how unfair it was to their dog to have owners that didn’t take their responsibilities seriously to protect their dog and others.....it’s not the dogs fault for acting like a dog. I fault the owners for being lazy and complacent - there are some dogs that are vicious and uncontrollable regardless of breed. But more often than not it’s owners who do not have the ability to be a responsible dog owner.
