If it's warranty or insurance work, there may be compliance restrictions that force them to use OEM parts. Also, different metal in different cats, and the sensors that pair up with them expecting certain readings, may throw CEL codes at you.

Absolutely… the precious metals inside is very limited these days. There are rows of vehicles at many dealerships waiting for new data.

I didn't see OEM Tundra cats in your ad.
Aftermarket catalytic converters cause the check engine light to come on.

My insurance paid a $6k claim for factory parts.
My dealership is providing me with a loaner/rental 2021 Tacoma and they are paying for it.
But I would like my truck back.
If I would have had cat shields, it never would have happened..

I have no tolerance for a thief. Once had a neighbor out on parole that sold some of my stolen fishing gear to my fishing buddy. I bought it back but couldn't do much since there were no positive identifying markings. I did get my sweet revenge a few weeks later when parolee tried to sell me a shotgun. Call to the fuzz and within 10 minutes he was cuffed and going away.

I'm assuming people having issues are from nanny states? Here in SoCar, you can just either do a straight pipe(not optimal for environment), but I'd just grab something off ebay and put it in as a stopgap measure while waiting for OEM converter.

Regarding check engine light, you just have to check the engine, if it's all good, then you can disregard and keep on driving!

I guess Texas is a nanny state then.
We have to have a vehicle inspected in order to do the annual registration.
The vehicle won't pass inspection with a CE light.

As well driving a vehicle without a cat can result in a maximum fine of $25,000 per violation in Texas.
It's illegal for a shop to install straight pipes bypassing a catalytic converter in Texas.

As stated previously, Toyota is paying for my rental, and the cost of the rental has exceeded the cost of repairs.
My dealership has over 40 Tundras and Sequoias on the lot waiting for cat parts.
They are paying for every one of these vehicle owner rentals until the work is completed.

It's a long read if anyone is interested..

Virginia is the same. There are no smog test, but the vehicle must have cats in order to pass the annual inspection.

Yep. My Magnaflow aftermarket cats eventually threw the P0430 code. I can clear the code with my scanner, but it’ll eventually pop back on. While I wait on Toyota OEM cats, my Tundra will fail the upcoming annual emissions test if the CEL comes back on. But if one is willing to get the Tundra back on the road while waiting on backordered OEM cats, then I suppose that’s one option.

As for the Valhalla shields/skids, I guess I can be called a fanboy. I got the aluminum skids after my cats were stolen. Wish I had gotten them before hand. They’re beefy, well-made and well designed. Granted, nothing is foolproof, but I agree they have a deterrent effect and will likely cause a cat thief to move on to an easier target. But aside from that, they can also work well as proper skid plates if the need arises. I only do mild off-roading, but should I pick the wrong line and hit a jutting tree root/stump or a rock, the skid plate should hopefully take the hit instead of something else underneath. Not sure how 1/8” steel would fare in such a situation, though, but mine is 3/8” or 1/4” aluminum (forget which), and that should hopefully be sufficient protection for such an occasion.

    Lots.
Plus one. Definitely agree that something is better than nothing every time.

Aside from the theft protection piece of mind you can see the "deterrent plates" make pretty good skid plates, too. Especially in the thickest varieties. I opted for the 1/4" aluminum model and they will be perfect for the beach and trail riding that I use my rig for.

Maybe the meth heads will start stealing cat protection plates and selling those instead of cats. They'd probably get more $ o_O

The best “deterrent “ would be the news reporting what happened when I found someone cutting cats off a Tundra (like mine where cut off) and the thief lost both hands and can’t steal anymore. Once the thieves find out what will happen to them….. maybe they will think twice and thefts will go down.

I told the police that I wanted to shoot them between the eyes, BUT I changed my thought, as that would be to quick. I told them since there was 4 cats stollen, that I want to cut both their hands off and both feet. “Eye of an eye”. They both agreed.

Yes, I would be humane and have a small blow torch to cauterize the wounds, so they would not bleed out and die. They have to live to tell other thieves or explain why their limbs where missing. I might be nice and give them a tattoo “Cat Thief” on their forehead.

I like the plates that have been sharpened, idea. Might do what I want to do, but they will do it for me. Yea, that’s the trick.

I would like to see one case in the entire state of Texas where someone was issued a citation for no Cats. Vehicle inspection consists of plugging into the OBII connector. If you buy a cat simulator you wont throw any codes and easily pass inspection. I see so many diesels without there emissions equipment it is comical.

Can’t speak for Texas, but in Virginia, they visually inspect for cats.,No cats, no pass inspection. Drive around with a failed inspection sticker and you’ll get pulled over in a heartbeat. Ask me how I know. :)

If you reside or work within the high population counties in Arizona that require emissions testing and are in a 1996 and newer vehicle then you go through the OBD2 testing protocol where they plug into the OBD port and verify compliance, then the check the gas cap for vapor leaks, and a visual check for cats and evap system components if visible. Diesel and pre-OBD2 vehicles have a different testing standard. If the vehicle fails any part of the test you simply cannot renew your license plate tags until the vehicle does pass.

I very much doubt that, since vehicle would make a very obnoxious smell while running without any cats(or dogs).

Re: sharp shields, you just wait until some nut case cuts their finger off while stealing your cat and sues you and wins..:frusty:

Cat simulators work perfect and send a signal to the computer simulating the millivolt signal an O2 sensor would send to the PCM. The reason criminals win is the majority of US citizens are cowards living in fear. Afraid of what could, may, possibly happen. Truth be told I don't know how most people sleep at night with all the nightmares they create in their heads. Obnoxious smell? Prefer the smell of gasoline over sulphur.

I got to see security video of 2 guys crawling under my truck only to crawl back out a couple seconds later. Having no cats ftw :p

The wife's cat shield on the Sequoia has been enough to keep the cats safe.

100% correct here when it comes to trading it into a dealer. I have stainless cats that came with my exhaust system. Just haven't wanted to put them on and damn sure ain't doing it now.

My truck is straight piped with o2 spacers because my cats were stolen. Passed Texas emissions inspection about a month ago no problem. Was in and out in 10 minutes. Maybe the guy had the rona or something and couldn’t smell.
