My neighbor did say that he's coming out ahead on the buy back. I didn't want to get into specifics. He's done with the whole thing. Just crazy shit tough.

And it was a carmax in the KC region. Not sure which one.

They do not sell "New" vehicles, Carmax is pre-owned only! I've toured their facilities and can assure you 100%, they do not sell vehicles they know have been wrecked. They have very strict standards and wholesale anything that doesn't meet those standards.

That is what I had always believed and understood.

It sounds as if the OP's neighbor purchased what they thought or understood to be a "New" vehicle.

They do. From what my neighbors wife said, they were pretty cocky about the whole thing. Matter of factually stating they sell cars that have fallen off the transport all the time, and they do surf auctions for highly desirable vehicles that are damaged prior to dealer delivery, and out bid everyone knowing they have a system in place to bring things up to snuff fast.

They honestly would've gotten away with this one if it wasn't for the shitty prep job on the paint.

I say believe what you want, but my eyes have been opened just that much more on things.

Carmax also sells "new" Toyotas at some dealerships. Makes me wonder if all of their "new" vehicles are auctioned vehicles like the OPs story

More than likely yes they are auction vehicles as they would need to be Toyota franchises otherwise.

Beware of all dealers and people you buy a used vehicle from Example: Just out of high school I worked for a Chevy dealer. I later found out they were doctoring titles and rolling back miles. I was young and really had no idea at the time what was going on. I worked in parts. They would roll back miles and replace the wear items (brake pedal pad, gas pedal pad, steering wheel, seat covers) things that see normal wear over time. They also had a new truck on the lot the sales manager wrecked he took it to the body shop got fixed and sold it as new.
I quit after the wrecked truck situation. After I left I found out about the rolling back miles, but I already had my suspicions. In the end they got raided and busted for it and rightfully so. The dealership shut down a few months later.

After that experience I really trust no one on any kind of used or new vehicle. Everything is buyer beware

Yes that is what my auto repair shop told me too. Pay cash and no Carfax reported.

I bought a used Sequoia from Carmax recently and have had a good experience. Carmax does operate two Toyota dealerships, one in MD and the other in WI.

That’s interesting I had no idea they had gotten into the new car game. I wonder why they would do that given how much better the margins are on used cars.

For me, I would hate to get in a territorial, finger pointing, and no where to go; when resolving warranty issues coupled with reasonable time frames for resolution of problems i. e."You bought it at Carmax" Take it back to them! etc...

Good for him. It can certainly be a pain in the ass whenever one has car troubles. Not to mention the fact that the dealership screwed them over from the get go.

Carmax is not the only one that sell damaged used cars.
I had a ford dealer try to sell me a used 1986 thunderbird tubo coupe back in 86, it had been wrecked. they said it wasn't (it was) then admitted it was after i showed them the body work. I bought a new one.
Back in 2004 I was looking for a used honda accord, found one at the honda dealer, carfax reported nothing, but, I found over spray and filler sand marks on both back panels, trunk, bumpers, inside the trunk.
I bought an acura somewhere else.
