I'm in Houston, obviously a massive Oil and Gas presence here if that interests you. Let me know, I can put you in contact with some friends in the sector.

I feel the same. Been a “field guy” for all walks of my career and I’m beat, mentally and physically. Sad that my current employer can’t find any young kid (half my age) to fulfill my shoes and work ethic. They tried guilting me into staying but it’s not worth it.

We are stoked for this move. We know it’s not going to be easy and smooth but after everything settles it will be.

I’ve learned to be that guy who is missed by your co-workers, but not by management. If you catch my drift.

best of luck with everything. My family and I picked up everything and loved two years ago. It’s been a chore but it was well worth it.

Yeah, I've reached that point where loving is a chore. And I think it's been more than two years......don't remember.

Exactly know that feeling. It’s even harder since most the owners are family related I married into and are great friends outside of work.

They understand tho and there’s much love behind everything but it definitely sucks for them lol

I work as a field tech for a natural gas pipeline up here in Maine but the overlords who partially own our company have a shitload of pipelines down there, gas field tech/compressor station type stuff maybe? Soul crushing but pays well.

Lots of old folks sprinkled around the woods in east texas. What do you wanna do that can cater to them? Cant have enough lawncare trailers. Buddy of mine pressure washes driveways south of houston, has a team that works and is in debt up to his eyeballs but all his shit is much nicer than mine, and he's never stressed. My other buddy builds home automation systems all over houston (and other riche areas) and spends 75% of his day, 18 hours, driving and on the phone, but he's doing amazingly well. He has 3 central a/c units on his house in deer park. I couldnt imagine how many people will drop $50k for a confusing remote control and a home audio system that runs alexa or siri or whatever, and will close their blinds from the other side of the world. My family in vidor have flooded half a dozen times from hurricanes. We flodded during ?Alicia? In pasadena, but the rest of my family seems safe enough to survive harvey. I moved to the hill country because i was done with mosquitos, rain, people. Bought too much land, too far from town, and am loving it. Out here, could make a living with a bobcat and a trailer. Our neighborhood bobcat/tractor guy keeps the whole hood greased, and its the kinda work that isnt usually urgent.

Lots of good info. I’ve been looking for somewhat a remote work position but those are hard to come by. As for now I have a great opportunity in DFW that I can see a ton of potential and growth. We are looking at about 2 hours out of the city for a home with 10+ acres that we’ve already narrowed down and have a realtor looking at for us. We are heading out at the end of March to check everything out and start putting in offers.

It’s what we want, coming from CA, the prices aren’t that bad! At least I won’t hear my neighbor taking a dookie… if so then he needs to see a doc!

I think the airBnB we got is in weatherford. I’ll have to check.

but yes. Prices are way to unreasonable out here, even with making decent money. Just not worth it

Seems like he does. Guess we will really find out when we are there lol. He’s been researching the exemptions I qualify for my VA rating along with the homestead stuff the wife wants.

Which one did you hit? I have made a point of taking family and friends that come into town to Bucees as a sightseeing destination. ;)
So, if you decided the move is en-route, make sure you have cat covers installed. Texas was hit like shit a while back, not that it died down or anything, just don't hear as much.
Better safe than sorry, and nowadays, more vendors to choose from.

we stopped at the one in Terrell off of I-20 heading to Hawkins. We flew in and I’m in a rental car (wanted to drive but heard stories of out-of-Towners (especially CA folks) being ran off the road). Lol.

but yes, once we move out here I’ll be installing all skids under the truck. We will be out closer to Tyler due to the job I have a second interview with today

    Update:

Second interview (in person), went very well last Friday in Tyler. Should be starting in a few weeks if everything goes well.

AND, shall be putting in an offer on a house in the Jacksonville area this week as well.

Have to say being in Texas was amazing. Everyone was nice and respectful. Even just ordering food wasn’t stressful. Appreciate all the leads and info and looking forward to moving out! Soon you will see me driving through with my truck and stopping at @Trdwillie14 for that front bumper lol.

    Will be closing escrow 5/15!

Got some upgrades to do prior to us moving in full time. I will be finishing off this emergency contract till December but the wife and kids will be relocating come July/August.

with that, the original breaker/paneling is from 1976 and we have been warned about the dangers of that. Was wondering if anyone knows anyone in that field/referrals for replacing the whole panel and breakers, grounding, running all new electrical and GFCI in the house?

in time (by EOY), will be replacing the whole HVAC system as well. But the panel is our priority once we close. I already have an appointment with FaithCo for next month. Any thoughts on them?

No idea on who to use, sorry, just no in that neck of woods.
However, this being Texas, since you are re-doing the whole panel, consider either solar or portable generator, so whenever/whoever does the panel, they can factor that in.
Reason being, weather-related power outage is more on the raise lately, and if you can have the budget to do it, might be worthwhile to take a look at it.

Exactly, and yes, we will be running a generator. Not to thrilled on the cost of the Tesla batteries to be completely off grid for when power does go out. I already have a few in havasu that aren’t CA compliant.

My friend did solar panel with Tesla batteries, he's happy with it.
I would say do what's in your budget range and add as needed, batteries would come in handy, but again, that maybe additional unnecessary cost.

Just get ready, get bids and see how reliable they are and hours they work. It’s a different ballgame for sure
