Here we go! So the fam and I are moving out to Texas by the beginning of the next school year. We are looking at eastern Texas to settle down in and call it our home.

We will have a home. But the next biggest hurdle is a new career. If anyone knows of any leads or thoughts of what to look at that would be greatly helpful.

Since getting the end of my 10 years of service in the Marine Corps back in 2013, I have been in the High Voltage power industry from the construction side to the engineering and inspection side. Not looking for anything crazy but anything to help us stay on our feet.

    Thank you guys.

    Where are you moving to?
East Texas is a pretty big area.
That might help us give better suggestions...

Plenty of growth (too much actually) in the entire state, hopefully you can find something in your field of expertise.
    Welcome to Texas...

We are looking at Tyler or Sherman area and possibly Amarillo (I know they aren’t East Texas).

5811 MP. Tried getting into the force after in Riverside/San Bernardino but got turned down because of my deployments and they said I would be “unstable.” Lol. So I gave up on that dream of Law Enforcement. And now I’m 37

I wouldn't take much stock in any CA law enforcement agency's valuation of your credentials. Try again here in TX.

Oh and hope it’s not a deal breaker, especially today, but we are die hard NINER fans. Been a fan since I was 5. So hope I don’t create any beef lol

Semper Fi, Tyler is East TX, Amarillo is West, been with railroad for 17 years if east TX, try Union Pacific, they also run west as well but there is BNSF railroad in Amarillo, good luck with your search, thanks for your service

Amarillo vs Tyler is like two different worlds. Of the 3 I would pick In order Sherman, Tyler, Amarillo. I am not really a fan of the panhandle very dry dusty and windy.

If you end up in Sherman you could look at somthing like L3Harris in Greenville maybe. A big aerospace company that does military stuff. Just a thought

    Tyler/Longview area is nice.
Tall pine trees and rolling hills..
I drive thru there twice a day going to Louisiana from Dallas and back.
I would research the Lindale area, it's just north of Tyler.

    Sherman/Denison is nice.
Melissa and Anna area, just north of Dallas (but far enough away) is really growing, you might look into it that.

I don't know much about Amarillo, except it was flat.
Haven't been there since I was a kid.

Every police department around here is hiring.
You might be able to find something in that field..

Lots of oil and gas opportunities out that way. They love a good electrician with hv experience.

I'd be looking around the Marshall or Longview area at oilfield opportunities if it was me. Even if you start in an entry level position, you should be able to climb up quickly if you are of value. A electric contractor or even a HVAC company might work out too. Any of the above will likely get you into a company truck or van eventually, which is a good thing since the area is pretty much filled with deer and you don't want one screwing up your own ride. Plus travel distances get long around those parts and a fuel card is huge!

I worked like a dog in the biz, sometimes for over 30 hrs straight with no food or water, but the money was flowing good. Check out Halliburton, Schlumberger, Drill string services Morgan City La, for a few. If you want West Texas, JA Oilfield mfg in Odessa Texas for downhole tool manufacturing, rental and inspection or Newtech manufacturing makes tubular inspection equipment. Lots of options. Then there is rig moving and water hauling if you want to drive a big rig as well. Lastly, buy a two ton and a float, start up a hotshot business. Lots of possibilities!

I believe Texas Instruments is about to construct big factory/complex up by Sherman. That area is about to explode in population, and developers are buying up land all around there near Anna and Melissa. Land costs there are going up.

    Update:

Got a response, have an interview with a veteran owned company out of DFW.

Will keep you all posted. My wife has also received like 300 messages on her FB post from all you wonderful Texas peeps. One gentleman even offered for us to stay at his house since he’s retired and travels and isn’t there.

    Grateful for it.

    It’s getting there!

Realtor doing live video walk thru’s for us.

The wife and I will be heading out next month to tour the areas we are interested in.

I call it a new career not a new job because as hitting 40, starting over keeps pushing retirement out lol. But that is going amazing and in talks with salary negotiations.

All in all, it’s moving forward! Come summer time we will be in Texas.

There are a ton of great places in Texas, I live in the Ft. Worth area…but I personally love the Hill country. Boerne, Wimberly, Fredericksburg, and a few others. There are a ton of Police Departments and sheriffs departments hiring if that’s what you’re looking for. Good luck and welcome to Texas!

Company I am in talks with is based out of Ft Worth. So we are looking in a 2 hour radius of commuting for me.

Trying to stay out of law enforcement.

I wish you the best of luck. I'm 41 and started a new "job". IDK if I'll make this my career, but I've been so beat up(mentally) from my old career that I don't know what I want to do with myself.
