Where you headed on your trip?!?!

I’ll have to check out Nemo Riff. I have a North Face bag currently.

    Heck yeah! Please do!

In and around the Jasper Alberta area ( can't think of the actual route right now).

I have a North Face bag as well, super cold weather mummy, think minus 30 but its synthetic and doesn't pack overly well and is overkill for 95% of camping.

Nemo has a cool bag design, its spoon shaped and has vents to cool down in the night, has a pillow pocket as well.

Well, I will be checking it out as we need one for my gf. May give me a reason to add another option for me as well!

This pic was also from Pictured Rocks and figured @smslavin may appreciate it. The sunlight set it up perfectly.

Trail weight shows 5lbs 13oz which is pretty good in my opinion.

I have not packed it yet(in my pack) but based off the bag it comes in and reviews,it should pack nicely.

I’m right where I need to be

I’ve done quite a few sections from GA to Virginia and then a little in Maine. I’ve cruised a ton of the Whites in NH and a good bit in the Greens in Vermont. I’m a fan of the offerings in the West but the APPs are the kind place you get buried in foliage and don’t see anyone for days. I went to Brevard College in Pisgah Natl Forest and have thousands of miles in dense temperate Rain Forest. Look up Shining Rock WIlderness, Joyce Kilmer Mem Forest, and Slockrock WIlderness. I could navigate all of these without map, compass, nor flashlight at night. I’ve also climbed a ton of the routes on these:
Otter Cliffs and first Nose pics are mine. All others I pulled from Interwebz

I’ve watched the sunrise, and sunset from Looking Glass Rock:

Anybody have opinions on Carson National Forest in NM or Durango, CO for a trip? I know there are a lot of Colorado members. @smslavin gave some options early on for other Colorado options. We are considering one of these two as it keeps the drive in the 12-14 hour range.

durango would be my vote. so much to do and see in that corner of the state. there's a great campground at the top of molas pass that gives you access to the Colorado Trail. you're also within quick driving distance of silverton, ouray and telluride.

but, i've heard good things about carson too.

there are two developed campgrounds up there. molas lake, which is a bit more developed, and little molas. little molas is a small free camping spot and if i remember correctly, there is no potable water there. there toilets but they're a short walk to the CT trailhead. silverton is super close down the north side of the pass. durango is a little bit further down the other side.

i can pull out some references and send you some notes later today.

Alright i got a couple of quick pics of some gear for those of you interested. I'm really impressed with how much the Nemo Rift packs down, really nice size with even their supplied compression sack. I might not even use one of my waterproof/airtight stuffs on it.

Tested out the MSR pocket rocket stove as well. Puts out a ton of heat, super easy to use.

Anyone have any recommendations on camp stoves? I currently have just a generic Coleman and its time to replace, I don't need anything small as its not for back backing but for use with my pop up camper. Just looking for some suggestions before I purchase something. Thanks!

Back to the water purification thing...sorry, I was late viewing this thread.

Over the years, I'm 61, I've pretty much tried most systems.

For me personally, filtering water stream or lake side is just a pain.

For awhile I went back to water purification tablets, which is very easy, but you have to always be keeping track of when you put in what tablets.

On the recommendation of a friend I purchased a SteriPEN Adventurer Opti: It is very light weight and easy to use. You don't have to sit, sometimes very precariously, next to the water source to use this product. You can fill your bottles then find a comfortable place to use the SteriPEN.

The one draw back is that the device signals when the sterilization process is complete by a blinking green light. Depending on where the sun is, or at what level the devise is in relationship to your eyes, this light can sometimes be hard to see.

At least for now this is my go to system.

I went with the Jetboil. Haven’t used it yet but reviews have been good and it was one of the ones suggested here.

Yes, I have used a Jetboil for a few years now and they are great.

I have had no issues whatsoever.

Actually, now that I think about it, the self igniting feature broke and I have to use a Bic lighter to start the stove.

If the self-starting features does indeed break be sure to bring two Bic lighters with you when backpacking and don't keep them close to each other.

Don't ask me how I know this, but if you were to store one lighter in the pot and forget it was there and then pour water into the pot you will ruin the lighter.

Hey, @Stroke250, I enjoy backpacking as well. I have went on several trips in Colorado. Last summer I went to Durango, then hiked into the Chicago Basin. That was a nice trip, but a long hike! Last weekend I hiked up to Willow Lake above Crestone.
    Some of my gear:
    Osprey Atmos pack
    Marmot Limelight 3P tent
Big Agnes Fly Creek HV UL2 tent
Big Agnes sleep system (sleeping bag with pad)
    Jetboil
    Katadyn BeFree water filter

I really enjoy hiking and look forward to any reports you have!

We were debating a trip up to Durango but are hesitant with the wildfires near there.

Any pics from your trip @B_brand ? Please share if you have any!

i bought a camp chef for car (truck) camping and its solid. Can put a griddle in it which is a nice feature. 2 burner, 20k BTU i think. One small bottle of fuel lasts about 4-5 meals.
