I've been there twice in the last year and once about 15 years ago. Stark different in that time. Seeing people squatting in RVs on the side of the roads, the literal garbage piled up on streets yet you have places like this.

I hate it for ya, really.

If federal tax write off then I have a problem with that. That means Cali is working the system and the Fed is not getting equal taxes by each state. :annoyed:

The whole thing isn't a federal write off. Just part of it

The thing is, this isn’t supposed to be a California bashing post, so I’m lost as to why people from South Carolina, Texas and Louisiana are even giving us their grand opinions on places to live, being that most of these places lack 3 of the 4 necessities (desert, skiing, fly fishing) the OP wants...

Born and raised in Cali, 53 years worth. Can’t beat the weather, lots of stuff to do, that’s what I loved about it. But I left, still have family there. I won’t bash it because there are nice people where I came from. But I couldn’t ignore the problems that continue to become worse, taxes, crime, homelessness and most important to me, people telling me how to think, what to eat, what to save, etc etc. i love all my American brothers and sisters, just wanted less drama and I can say I feel much more relaxed and happy now. I visit regularly, 4-5 times a year, may even move back someday who knows.

I looked at NC (Charlotte) Nevada (Reno) Oregon (Bend is awesome), Spokane WA, Idaho. All were great and had good and bad things about them. I would just recommend wherever you consider, go visit it first for an extended period of time so you can get a true feel for the area.

Isn’t it great to live in a nation where you have 50 different choices, encompassing nearly every climatic and geographical features found around the globe, to choose from? Could you imagine living in Canada where your choices are cold, colder and coldest?

I agree. It's a lot to uproot and really difficult monetarily to go back. It better be a good decision! Although I'm 6/10 on making good decisions. lol.

Most people visit a place to experience a geographical location or attraction. I've truly considered visiting Canada to experience the people.

I hear ya. I visited upstate New York (lake placid) recently and whereas I expected chowder and new englanders, I got Canadians and Poutine, deeeelish. Lol. If upstate ny had any jobs, they'd have everything you want, minus people, it’s awesome.

Maine has skiing, great fly fishing, is inexpensive if you stay away from the coast, mountains, and there is even a desert, though I have never seen it. They are a shall issue state and even allow you to grow your own weed.

Personally, I live in the Catskill mountains of NY and I love it except for the taxes and some of the politics. If I ever move I will be going to the Smoky mountains, probably somewhere outside of Asheville or Charlottsville, NC. I like the mountains and would enjoy being near a college town for the arts.

Without getting political, people leave a place because they don't agree with certain things and when they get to that new place they do the exact thing that made their old place not so good.... California is beautiful but you guys can keep it... Too many bad decisions have changed that state for the worse...
