Looking for places we have never heard of. SHHHHHH!!! i'll keep it quiet.

So yeah, it's expensive. Politics are crazy. This isn't a diatribe on politics so I won't get into that, I'll just state that I think they are all crooked (both sides) and power corrupts. Ok ,that's done ...let's move on.

Considering looking for other places in the next few years that meet the family requirements.
The positives of California are access to a variety of things. I can be at the desert, beach, skiing, or world class fishing all within 2.5 hours of the house in Auburn. But, you pay for that access.

Seriously, what we are looking for is really good mountain biking, Fly fishing access, hiking, skiing. Yep we love the mountains. But is it close to good health care? Are taxes crazy? Is the traffic and population exploding? Don't mind cold but really short summers would bum out the wife.

    We've looked at:

Hailey, Id - a little far from all inclusive healthcare. If you've ever dealt with anything major, believe me the last thing you want to do is drive hours each way.

    Sisters, Or-
    Carson City-
    Northern Utah-
What else is out there? Where's the place we've never considered?

North Carolina! Beautiful beaches on east side and gorgeous mountains on the west side. I am 2 hours away from the ocean and 2.5 hours away from the mountains. Love it!

Love it here in Northern Utah! Although we're growing like crazy and I'm not sure I could say the same in 10 years... Last year we were number three in the nation for population growth. This has caused the real estate market to skyrocket.

Would be an excellent home if you love mountain biking, hiking, skiing, etc.

East TN checks all those boxes except for skiing. The east coat pretty much sucks for winter sports.

Heath care is fine here but you'll see more obesity than you've ever seen in your life. TN is one of the top 5 states for lowest overall tax burden. We don't have a state income tax but we do have a high sales tax. Nashville is exploding but East TN is not. Someone else mentioned North Carolina. I would agree with that as well. Western North Carolina would check all your boxes including some places to ski but the slopes will be a far cry from what you are used to.

I would say Colorado but there's plenty of Cali. people that move there already. Moved about 18 years ago and the growth is crazy ever since I left. Love going back to visit and maybe move back eventually but as time goes on the expense $$$ goes up even more. Might have to wait until another down turn of economy.

I’m here in CA and you’re right I love that I can experience snow, forest, desert and the beach in one day. But it’s getting expensive and I hate the guns laws, maybe Alaska is more freedom. I retire from the Army in about 5 years and me and my wife have yet to decide where we finally wanna buy a house at.

No. Colorado is closed. Maybe some exceptions will be made for Tundra owners. That will be decided once an application is completed and check for $100 processing fee clears.

Texas is a terrible place......and very overcrowded. No mountains, beaches smell like dead fish, red tide kills everything. Weather is terrible. People are not friendly at all. You might even get shot. Don't come here.:rofl::rofl:

    Texas.

    Long summers
North of Austin has hills not mountains but very bike friendly area etc
    Lots of off roading opportunities
Corpus for fishing, San Antonio for shopping, Austin for events, Houston for museums/work/culture/science and if you drive for 30 mins you get to Kemah. They are all 2hrs away from each other. I happen to be living in a city that is in the middle of all so any one of them is 2hrs for me wohooo

    Also

No state tax! :) 87 was 2.20/gallon the other day when I filled it up and thats from shell you can find cheaper for sure

    good luck

I'm in VA, and I agree with the above poster who suggested Western NC, like Asheville. Really cool town in the middle of amazing outdoors opportunities.
Personally, I'd kill to live in Utah. But I think I'd have to get a divorce before that ever happened.

I would say Virginia, but off roading sucks in this state. North Carolina is a great choice for mountains, fishing, and off roading. But nowhere in the East is going to check all the boxes.

Look at what made California what it is today, and make damn sure the state you plan on relocating to isn't trending in the same direction.

@NoRcptn I see you've got Hailey, ID listed there.

I think you need to take a good hard look at the North Idaho panhandle and surrounding areas. Talking Spokane (although a liberal state, no state income tax), Couer d'alene, Sandpoint, Rathdrum, Kellogg, etc.

Speaking from the Spokane point, housing is reasonable (although in a hot market right now), traffic isn't bad (I have coworkers who commute 35 miles in 40 minutes), plenty of outdoor activities (60 lakes within 60 miles, lots of rivers as well), world class skiing (Schweitzer, 49 Degrees, Silver Mountain all within roughly an 1.5hrs), plenty of mountain biking to be had (Silver Mountain bike park in Kellogg), no "ocean" beaches but plenty of sandy beaches at large lakes. Climate is very similar to a Bend, OR and similar, High desert-esque. Hot summers, cold winters. Healthcare is very good here with lots of options, my dad had a stroke two years back while visiting and went to Sacred Heart in Spokane, multiple specialists on staff.

If you're at all interested, would be happy to share more information. Just don't tell any other non-Tundra driving Californians about it. Things up here are pretty great.

Go to Boise, Billings, Salt Lake. I'm from CA and I'm in FL now. Don't do it. It's terribad here. I was on a business trip to Des Moines a couple of months ago, I actually liked it there.

Also, people get all "Oh you live in California, you need to get out. But don't come here, you're not welcome here." like... WTF?
