I've lived in Pearl Beach, Australia, Amsterdam, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kentucky, and now Alabama.

Northern Alabama is by far my favorite all around place to live, hands down.

Whatever place you decide, get those CA License plates off, so your truck isn't messed with. I've seen it happen all over the PNW. It's not right, but definitely happens.

Yeah I hear that. People get caught up in a lot of stuff. I've seen equestrians damaging MTB cars. People with Trump stickers getting stuff thrown at them. People with Bernie stickers driven off the road. I don't smoke pot but could point out people daily who probably should consider it.

Been eyeing the Cary area for a couple of years now. The gas prices and power outages have just about pushed us to the brink (among many other things)

Here we go again with all the California trash talk. I really don’t get what all the fuss is about. Yes the government sucks. You just gotta find the right cities to live in. LA is trash along with SF, so I don’t live there. And of course you’re not gonna survive here on a McDonald’s salary. Expenses are higher, but so are the salaries. It evens out. Moving out for political reasons is one of the dumbest things I’ve heard. If you move out to be closer to family or job transfer, I get it. It’s like Hollywood celebs saying they’re moving out of the US because of president Trump. Makes no sense to me.

It is clear a lot of people didn't really read his post. Good luck fly fishing, hiking, mtn biking or skiing in Texas. There are only a few areas where people could do 1-2 of these things.

    None yet.
The mountain towns of Central AZ (Flagstaff, Prescott, Alpine, Payson, Sholow, Pinetop, etc...) have great hiking and mountain biking, lakes and unlimited miles of off-roading (skiing in Flagstaff). The cost of living is much lower than most of CA, however, good jobs can be difficult to find. Can't stand the valley cities personally (Phoenix, Scotsdale, Mesa, etc..) to damn hot in the summer. We moved to Prescott, AZ from CA about a year ago and are very happy here. We were lucky because my wife works remote and was able to keep her job. My 2010 Tundra truck registration was $93 and gas is $2.65 at Costco. Property taxes are about 1/8 of CA and income tax less than 1/2. They also honor the 2nd Amendment in AZ.

Bend, Or for me next year. It is a beautiful place to do all that stuff. It is getting a little crowded from what my mom and sister say. Lots of Californian's moving up there. A bit expensive and the jobs don't pay that great, I've got something lined up, but it's less than what I make here in Georgia. It's the quality of life that I'm looking for though.

Good luck with your search and choice.

I moved from the Bay Area to Bozeman, Montana roughly six years ago and never looked back. Killer hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing, mountain biking, dirt biking, you name it. I personally like the skiing here compared to Tahoe as well, way less people.

100% agree. Make the best out of where you live and stop worrying so much about how other people are changing your area. Nothing stays the same. Chances are if you live somewhere cool with activities that draw people to it, you’re going to have an influx of people, be it from CA or elsewhere. Stop making them the source of your frustration and just chill out. If you want to move to a place with little draw that never changes, there’s plenty of those all over the country, just pick one.

On to the OPs original question. I think it’s hard to replicate what we have in CA, especially if you have an eclectic love of the outdoors. I like the same things you like, and as someone who grew up with day trips to the beaches, hikes in the mountains, and righteous runs down the slopes, I’m not sure where I would go to scratch all those same itches. If beaches aren’t that important to you, then I have family and friends that live in OR and CO and they love it, although they have similar complaints about traffic that I do, especially where the infrastructure wasn’t designed to handle the load. Some areas of ID are also pretty great, if you’re okay with longer winters and shorter summer. I get your desire to be near good medical, and my wife and I have the same need, which is one of the reasons we moved to the Sacramento area in the first place.

I get that CA has drawbacks, but none so far have pushed me into leaving. The thing I hate is feeling like I have to hide where I’m from because others have built up this negative view of the stereotypical Californian. I meet people from all over this great country and always try to treat them with hospitality and respect when they’re in my neighborhood, regardless of where they hail from. I don’t understand why others can’t do the same. Every state has great people and every state has idiots. Let’s just be excellent to one another, shall we.

    Leaving cali is not hiding.

    It is a cost/benefit analysis.

Also, look at future trends. Guess what is going to happen when enough people move out of California? The people moving out are the taxpayers. When we lose enough of them CA becomes Detroit

Don't worry, I'll stay out. Not my thing. I'm into the more moderate size cities.

I wouldn't be so angry if people wouldn't act like shitheads towards others that came from somewhere else. I wasn't always so angry, I was groomed to be. When I lived in CA, I would treat those that came from out of town with the utmost respect. I used to love hearing about their hometowns and how they grew up. I would offer to tell them about local places where locals would go and things that locals would do. Then when I moved out, my shit gets vandalized, I get told to go home, get funny looks, get ignored... yeah, it drains a person.

I grew up in the east bay, Clayton/Concord/Walnut Creek. I went to college in Dallas and then lived in Phoenix/Scottsdale for about 5 years after college. I am now back in the east bay. There are pros and cons to every place I've been. It's really hard to beat California weather and variety of things to do/attractions. I like to fish. In my opinion, the fishing here is hands down better than AZ and TX. Things cost more, but I also make more money. My house appreciates way faster. In the end, I love the weather and the opportunity for outdoor activities. I can live with the high cost and politics. I still have guns and deal with the crazy laws.

Having said that, I could live in AZ again and have considered it. I would not live in TX again. The weather is terrible. It is flat. The outdoor activities are severely limited when compared to here. I go back a lot still due to family, and it is a fun place to visit, but I wouldn't live there.

Other states that may fit are OR, WA, CO, UT, NM. Basically stay out west for those requirements if you are ok with snow.

MT would be nice as well. I've been to Big Sky in the winter and it's beautiful. I haven't been during the summer, but I'm pretty sure it's just as compelling.

For sure! Yes, it's hard to replicate. It is pretty nice to go ski for the day and go MTB and Fly fish the next. For me it's definitely more of a cost of living. If I can get close to finding the same attractions at a lower overall expense, win-win.

I read through this thread and it is pretty sad the number of people who really aren't kidding about getting violently angry seeing someone from California move in to their neighborhood. There are quite a few of those people here in Idaho, but in my experience they are outnumbered by genuinely kind, welcoming folks. We live in Boise. Although it's not a place you've never heard of, it is about a 10/10 when it comes to MTBing, fly fishing (maybe 11/10 there), hiking (also maybe 11/10), and skiing. I absolutely love the weather, too. It's high desert here, so pretty much no humidity to deal with. A big snow is rare (the city doesn't even have its own plows), and it's blue skies and sunny 3 days out of 4. It will get in the upper 90s in the summer, but it's so dry that it doesn't bother me at all. The hottest part of summer is a little short, but the time of year when the highs are 72-90 is long.

You can definitely get a vastly different experience depending on where you live around Boise. A 30 minute drive could put you worlds away culturally speaking. Could also be the difference between a $700k house and a $200k house, of course. Wherever you end up, I wish you luck. Sounds like you have your priorities together and are taking a pretty reasonable and open minded approach. As others have said, there are ignorant loudmouths all over (internet forums are no exception). You can only try to limit your exposure to them and go after the things that are important to you and your family.

No, and so I'm not confusing anyone it's a cost of living more than anything followed closely by a slower lifestyle. Are politics crazy? Yeah. But it's crazy everywhere, so I take it all with a grain of salt. I don't have enough energy, will, or patience...my kids and wife take all I have lol.
