Everyone wants to go where the grass is greener. CA people want to move to TX and CO and people there want to move to another state. No state is perfect. My wife and I wanted to move out West for a while but every time we did the math it didn't make sense to leave Tennessee.

I don't believe that every person that leaves CA is bringing views that don't align with yours. That's a myth. Even Rick Perry said this when he was Gov of Texas. If anything, the majority are leaving because they don't agree with what's happening there. I think the bigger issue is people leaving High Cost of Living areas, and bringing their big salaries with them to our LCOL areas.

I think the next decade is going to be interesting. We're seeing a big shift with lots of people relocating and 10,000 people turning 65 every day. 36 million Americans moved last year. I wish I had the money to invest in retirements homes. Remote work is changing the game for a lot of people and we're seeing some sort of reset with job openings and wages right now. As with most changes, there will be winners and losers.

So the guys who built our freeways built roads in Colorado too? You need long travel to handle the 405.

:fistbump:You said it brother. Everybody thinks Californians are like that Southpark episode where the smug SF people smelled their own farts. Most of us are pretty normal but admittedly with bad manners. Most of us don't like what is going on here and wish we could leave, some are bold enough to pull anchor and go.

When I take 405N and transfer to 101N there is a fast sweeping turn with a bump near the end. I hit full droop every time. The 5 South through SFV has a few jumps in the car pool lane.

4 more years, maybe 5 if I can stick it out, then I am gone. CA can kiss my butt. I work for this sorry state, I almost hate to admit... Then it's off to AZ or TX... Where I can afford to live.

So what are people paying in annual registration fees (including weight fee) at the California DMV?

    $200, $400, $500…. $600 per year?

Interesting… does it get cheaper with older vehicles? Or are you referring to the new car registration (first time registration) being more expensive?

Vehicle registration should typically go down as the vehicle ages.

My registration is about $190 per year; I don't have to pay the weight fee otherwise mine would be $270. In years past it was over $300.

What @des2mtn said. At least in CA, registration fees goes down as the vehicle ages and decreases in value. There are other factors such as county, special plates, etc. but age and declared value is the main reason it decreases because the other taxes/fees usually only increase over time.

Maryland does not charge fees based on age. There are weight classes for trucks and not based on usage commercial or personal. I think it was $200 for 2 years for my truck.

Just found this thread during a search as to why my registration renewal has a weight fee of $154 and I noticed when I bought the truck used just over a year ago, it was listed as commercial on the registration transfer paperwork. Had thought the previous owner had it registered to some business but apparently all trucks here (CA) have the commercial designation, oddly. I had been meaning to call the DMV to get it converted to personal since I don't use my truck for any business-related reasons but it seems that would be a waste of time. Man, this state really gets you on the sticker for your plate. My truck is a 2013 and my registration renewal that I'm about to pay today is $589. My wife's 2016 Yukon XL is like $630 due here in a few months. My motorcycle is about $178 and I rarely even ride it. When we lived in IL, we paid a flat fee of something like $78 no matter what you drove and bikes were cheaper, like maybe $40 or so. We make more money here but damn, it all gets gobbled up in high taxes, high cost of living, high gas, etc.

Trucks in California are considered commercial.

You mean from commercial to personal? Yeah, as mentioned (or implied), I'm not going to be doing that now as it seems it would be an uphill battle. I do have a camper shell currently on the truck but I bought the truck to load up dirt bikes and move stuff around from time to time, in which case the camper shell would need to come off, and I don't want to get fined for using the truck how it was ultimately intended to be used.
