I hope everyone is doing well out there!

I am curious to know if other California residents are being charged a weight fee on their registration renewals. I just got my vehicle registration in the mail and noticed there is an additional $80 weight fee listed which brings the total to $214. I went on the CA DMV website and noticed the truck is listed as a commercial vehicle. I just drove up to the DMV and the lady informed me all pickup trucks in CA are considered commercial vehicles. I proceed to do some googling which seems to confirm this notion but just wanted to inquire with others.

Yes. This is true.. I'd been paying like 400 something over the last 10+ years... on my 07 registration

Also, does anyone know if we have a cap on the truck bed would that make it somehow exempt from being a commercial vehicle? I just read on another forum that it does but have to take it in to the DMV for verification. I am going to drive back to the DMV tomorrow to inquire further.

There is a new Law coming soon for Coolifornia Trucks. It allows you to Self Identify your truck whatever you wish for the lowest tax possible.

Numerous threads about this. The general experience seems to be that no, adding a shell won’t change the commercial designation. Used to, but I think that’s passed.

Heads up....for some reason I'm seeing a lot of Texas plated vehicles here lately in Denver Metro and a lot of Texas temporary tags. Not sure what's up with that. A coworker who is from Texas was not surprised.

Thanks for all the prompt responses! I tried searching all forums on this site for threads including "weight tax" but didn't really find anything so ended up reading about it on less favorable sites.

CA gooses everyone. If you don't fall into one category, you fall into another. I hate being told my truck is fat... The moment I retire I am outa here. Can't afford the property taxes, the weight fees, the over 4 bucks a gallon gas...

No you cannot change your fee's with the exception of Historical Plates. I have these on my fire truck and pay 90 a year as opposed to 1100. We are being charged road tax too and then they want to toll you to use it. It is insane
but for now I have a corner to hide in-GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!!

You might be onto something there. Tell them you'll sue for fat shaming your truck and I guarantee they'll drop the fees.

I know in the past you put a camper on and they waive it, but they give you a license plate that identifies your truck as a passenger vehicle I believe. This way if a cop is bored enough and sees you driving with an open bed they can get you. Its pretty lame. Try the fat shaming, you'll have better luck.

News to me if they changed that. I was still under the impression that was an option. But if you do that, and get caught without the shell, it’s a big fine.

I believe keeping it at as a commercial vehicle allows us to park in the yellow commercial parking zones. I haven’t tested it, but have been told it’s legit from people whom have parked there.

Damn now I'm wondering if the LS460 gets the weight tax too. I think it weighs the same as my truck.

I think this is technically right. Especially the big fine if you find a work-around for registering it as non-commercial then get caught hauling a washing machine. My understanding is, the shell has to be mounted in a way that fairly “permanent”, i.e. adhesive bonding the shell to the bed sides at time of inspection. So it’s clear there’s no easy transformation for use as a “truck”. By little 1988 Toyota had a shell so well attached, I couldn’t cut through the seal with any regular tools… but registration was commercial. I admit, I don’t really know.

In 10 years 50% of Texas residents will be California transplants. Pass. I’m trying to get away from them. Back in high school I really wanted to move to Texas. Kept on waiting and waiting and waiting. Now I can’t go because “Californians aren’t welcome”.

Not a commercial vehicle so nope. Unless you get the plates indicating you want to be a commercial vehicle. Some people in SF get the commercial plates just for convenience. Downtown literally 98% of street parking spots are for commercial trucks. More nonsense to get you to park in the outrageously priced city owned parking garages.

Just make sure that when you get here you don’t bring any Cali with you and change those plates if your headed to Houston as quick as you can. Out of state plates are getting keyed left and right. I guess that’s some Texans idea of welcome to the team. I imagine that wall we are building won’t be for just Mexico in 20 years. Better get in why you can

Hell, at least you're by the coast and SD. Congratulations on your kiddo! First one?

Price and location is all relative I guess. I always had a great time in CA.

This is the ghetto here, and 1 Bedroom apartment. 1722.00

    https://cosprings.craigslist.org/apa/d/colorado-springs-private-balcony-cafe/7333660995.html

Little better area, but studio. 2400.00

    https://cosprings.craigslist.org/apa/d/colorado-springs-room-for-rent/7341635906.html

This is actually a nice area: 2374.00

My MIL just moved into a 55 and older community. We got a screaming deal for 3200.00 per month and a long term lease (one bed...kinda). She can afford it though. She had several houses and townhouses she could have chose from. In the process of selling them all.

Now I know why I’ve seen more Coolifornia Plates in my State these last 6 months than ever before. It was rare to see any at all as long as I remember. We have high taxes here, as well, but the housing is affordable.

4 more years and my 2002 is eligible for Antique Plates which I will be getting for same reasons as the member earlier mentioned about his Fire Truck.

I have been considering selling the Lexus and looking for a Trophy truck to handle the potholes in CO.
