Fair enough. I mean…it didn’t rattle and squeak on the lot though, you know? But yeh, you’re still right- I bought it and I could have bought something else.
Same holds true today. I could keep it while being dissatisfied, which I feel would be kind of silly. Or I could go buy something else/at least look around.
Well aware I’m not going to find agreement in this space, and that’s super fair too.
I’ll reiterate, I don’t hate my truck. I get compliments on it almost daily. End of day though…what I drive is for me.

So any word on what percentage of tundras this is going to affect? Everyday I see a couple new tundra engine failures on Facebook. From 10k to 50k miles. I got my truck December of 2021 I currently have 16k miles and am just wondering what my odds are.. anyone in the know hear anything? That stickied page isn’t giving any helpful info besides a small hand full of reports but there’s so many more.

Tundra's don't have failures, plain and simple. They have set backs.

It’s a wild guess. I don’t like reading though multiple threads but it looks like respondent to Facebook and/ or forum poll which to me isn’t an accurate enough to produce a %.

We’ll never know what the percentage is or how wide speed it is. But what we can loosely say is initial quality isn’t on par with the gen 2 reliability and the initial quality is middle of the pack with the segment.

For now, it seems the tundra isn’t on its high horse for reliability above the competition but I’m sure will get there. Just a pretty rough start and it’s okay to admit

    Just a thought

Guess is based without Data or better known as a "WAG". Wild ass guess :)

Toyota invented "TQM" Toyota. Quality Management.

They know for sure reliability data for all models as this is core to TQM philosophy. Decisions made on factual data.

Facebook and the internet comments stoked/fueled by I heard it from a friend or personal experience.

Personal experience based on said failure of owned truck is data but does not scale it to the entire production run numbers providing full extent of part number issue and total numbers of failures.

One thing is pretty clear, as more trucks get in the 15-30K mile mark, the failures are popping up more often.

We do have finite production numbers. The data on failures from this forum, Facebook or others is flawed and not accurate as there are no set criteria for defining failures and capturing the data.

We do agree there are failures and some serious.

The worst part of it all is if you take your family on vacation somewhere... Towing something, and your truck craps out somewhere 10 hours away from home...

Sorry that happened. When you find out what exactly happened, post details in this thread for data collection.

Jesus man. Glad you didn't get hit or anything. What were the three errors?

I suppose if the engine was not getting enough fuel it would throw codes. But it does sound weird.

I'm not reading the fuel leak as a cause of the engine failure. Just the first thing that went wrong. It's obviously not related. He mentions a loud knocking noise as well.

I am hopeful this is a real person, and if so, then I feel bad for him loosing his truck. However, there have been some very odd postings lately with people who write like their free basing crack cocaine, and having conversations with themselves (even quoting themselves!) on an internet message board.

    Just smells like troll

@ryanwgregg and @wedemmoez do you know if Toyota has identified the cause of the engine failures yet, and a solution? It still seems like I’m seeing several trucks a week. A few examples this week: Thank you

Yes, Toyota did identify the cause.

Most likely, the solution has been already implemented in the new trucks. We will know if we won't see any more owners reporting this issue with build March 2023 or newer. Give it 6-12 months

    No, they won't tell you what/when/how :)

    Thats my guess.

Think about it - PhDs and engineers who created this engine from the ground up can't figure out what's causing failures 1.5 years in with many samples from all over the US being shipped to their lab for diagnosis?

Of course they know the reason, and they hopefully already implemented the fix in new trucks because they use this same engine in their all Lexus and Toyota large suv and trucks. Do you think they would continue installing this engine in Sequoia, new Land Cruiser, Lexus LX600 if they believed it can grenade still?

Think we're down to two plausible reasons for the engine failures. The end result is spun main bearings, so it's either poorly manufactured bearings, or poor oiling of said bearings. If the problem was poor oiling by design, they would have likely noticed that during the R&D. That leaves us with some bad main bearings from whoever supplies them to Toyota.

Correct. This is why we've had Tundras build up to at least 03/2023 with these issues, hopefully they figured out issue by now

Earlier posts mention this spun main bearing problem happens with another variation of this engine since 2018 (in Lexus).
